7:16 completely threw me off with his brilliant writing. I was expecting the same return of theme, but instead he added a borderline painful change in anticipation. Extremely effective.
ahh this is excellent. i just heard the cleveland orchestra perform this yesterday! and i heard it again in 2007 by the same orchestra. it really takes many repitions to fully understand exactly what is going on this piece. it really is excellent.
This movement has always reminded me of evil clowns running around wreaking havoc! So playful, yet with a twisted side. One of the creepiest pieces I have ever played.
@salsadance999 Yeah, you could try Prokofiev's ballet "Romeo and Juliet". I also recommend his piano concertos (esp #3).
If you're going for similar historical context, look no farther than Shostakovich (I recommend his 7th, 5th, and 10th symphonies, his piano concerto #2 and his violin concerto).
@salsadance999 look at other romantic era composers like rachmaninov, chopin, liszt, tchaikovsky....saint saens is a good one also... you might find some stuff you like there....
We are blessed to have such great music as part of our heritage. A saving grace that validates human existance. I only wish that everyone else wasn't so screwed up--just kidding. One of my favorite pieces by Prokofiev, all movements.
Everytime I hear Shostakovich's 10th Symphony 2nd Mvmt I see an old 50's propaganda b/w film where Soviet MiGs scramble to intercept imperialist B52's headed for Moscow.
well this was wrote during a time of war in...Russia i believe...it tells of how he felt during the time of his changing country...first time it was played an artillery strike was dropped outside of the concert hall...the concert went on ^_^
@IAmDJ507 actually, there was not an artillery strike on the city. there was actually several friendly rounds fired off in celebration of a recent victory against the germans at the vistula river. just as dramatic though!

I'm in marching band and our whole show this year uses music only from Prokofiev's fifth symphony. It is so beautiful, and absolutely gorgeous.

I suggested to my son to adapt for metal band, and on relistening, its not necessary, this can't be modified, already perfect

The recording is so crisp. It is hard to believe that this was recorded way back in around 1979.

This is the best recording I've heard. I can hear every instrument, and it's brilliant.

Sinfoniette: This movement is marked 'Allegro marcato' and not 'Allegro giocoso' (that's the 4th movement).

I hear a little of the final movement of the seventh piano sonata at 4:18...eerie.
A great movement, one of Prokofiev's finest from arguably his best symphony.

2nd movement sounds sarcastic, humorous and ironically triumphal, an epic symphony premiered in 1944

Anybody else saw a train while listening? An old heavy moving train, which maybe brings young soldiers to the war...

@IAmDJ507 They said you could hear the gunfires in the concert hall not an artillery strike. And yes the concert went on.
