Turning to God by trusting in the finished work of Jesus is turning from sin. When we repent of our sin Jesus is then our forerunner and by simple faith in what He did God accepts us with open arms. I've noticed there to be many people even a fellow street preacher (not going to name) who believe someone may profess Christ as Lord then completely turn away from the faith and yet were saved all along. Jesus said we will bear fruit in Him. Keep up the good work; God be glorified in Jesus name.
