is it just me or are main characters in the macross tend to disappear? hikaru is mia. shin is dead/mia. basara is mia. The characters not mia are alto and the guy from macross plus.

Humanity is spreading itself out across the cosmos- the casts aren't really close to each other to directly interact. The creative team is also intentionally vague about what happened to MegaRoad 1 and its huge escort fleet- it's quite possible that Hikaru, Misa, and Minmei just found themselves in some space where they are simply no longer able to make contact with command.
Dont even start with this shit. Hikaru's seiyuu died+Iijima Mari ran away to L.A. because she didnt wanna become some pop idol over here in Japan. That's the ONLY reason they never continued the story with Hikaru/Misa/Minmei.

I know it likely wouldn't be simple to just hire new voices and have it fly with the unpleasable fans they'd be pandering to. But the subject was about narrative, which's a kinda different matter: about how it isolates each series from another with large gaps in time and space with little closure on the past characters, and how it goes about covering up those production problems.

This has got to be the only mecha show where the protagonist manages to be totally non-violent, and wins purely by rocking the SHIT out of the bad guys.
This anime was great, but like most anime's from the 90's the story was slightly watered down compared to 80's anime to be a little more kid friendly, it has a great theme and grows on you and leaves you with a great understanding on the power of music
I had watched every single Macross since 1982 Saga, well actually I watched it for the first time on tv on 1985 since I was born on the same '82 and from there I fall in love with Macross, waiting for the 30th aniversary show on 2012.
I started Macross with Macross Zero last year. I've seen Zero, SDF Macross and Macross 7, planning to watch Macross 2 and Macross Frontier, after that, I'll be aching for more to appear.
Its nice to c that you also fall in love with Macross, I think is one of the best masterpieces in anime, is the anime with the best music because its a central part of the shows. You'll love Frontier because its the first FullHD macross and also because its a really good 25th aniversary show.
I love Macross (Robotech saga) but this series I just can't abide.. All it is about is the guy passionately singing poorly written pop ballads while controlling his Mech with a guitar (?) "Hey everybody!! Stand up!!" COme on guys, lets have peace and love instaed of Intergalactic giants blowing the shit out of everything. Donb'y get me wrong - I like Min Mai but this is just ughh.. I did 7 episodes - can't stand any more.

Yes it's different, yes it's blatantly unrealistic, but it IS fun, and it's well-animated.
It's just a different kind of show, which is alright by me.
Plus, it helped the Basara was basically the show's Minmay: not ACTUALLY the main character, as all of our viewpoint and character development in-show focus on Mylene, NOT him.
And it's a show where rock lets you fly jets, shoot soul-lasers, and make space elves orgasm.
this series is the worse. if you ask me, The Super Dimension Fortress Macross is the best of the series. after a few episodes of Macross 7, I decided to stop watching it. I thing that I will watch Macross Frontier instead. it looks more like the worthy sequel.

I agree. Personally, I can't help but think the show could have been better everytime I see this intro. Granted, I would have loved to see a better story, and some real mecha porn to go with Basara rocking out. Macross 7 may be the G Gundam of Macross, but G Gundam did a lot of things better than this.

@LFinnigan The reason I rank Macross 2 so low is that OVAs are usually given a decent budget, and at only 6 episodes it looks like it was animated by students. Macross 2 was so bad I almost think that Macross Plus was made as an apology.
Even though Macross 7 certainly isn't my favorite chapter in the series, I really love this Opening. Seventh Moon is an awesome song and the visuals are really slick.
@parag3247, it's a sequel, but it only has Max and Miriya (Who now have several daughters) and Exedore (Exesol) from the original series. Rick (Hikaru) Lisa (Misa) and Minmei are missing and presumed dead after a space mission they took vanished into thin air.
@parag3247 Minmei/Rick/Lisa taking off in the colony ship is seen in one of the Macross OAVs, If I remember correctly. Their vanishing is mentioned in some sort of liner notes and I think is mentioned at some point in Macross 7 and Frontier.
I dunno if it's crap, it's just absurdly derivative.
I've never been a fan of the overly effeminate art style that's become popular since the early 2000's in art style, but what really hurts the show is how it's just a shiner rehash of the original series with more Gundams to sell more toys for almost the first HALF of it.
It definitely picks up in the second half plotwise, with a different plot at least, but it's still too long a wait.
Not the best of the macross series, but its ok. It starts out very slow. This is more focus on music rather than just a straight drama/action plot, which in some way kind of ruins it,
The series is no good. Sorry. The plot is really, really, really slow. Basara is one of the worst main characters i've ever seen in my whole life. If they speeded up the plot and changed Basara for another guy it could have been a very good anime.
Macross 7 would have been great except for one factor that ruins it: Basara. He is such a angsty unlikeable douche that he ruins the whole series by himself. The music is great and hanging out with Max is cool, but nothing can overcome such a shitty main character.
BTW: There is nothing lame about piloting a mech with a guitar!
@Highstar25 I like death the kid. There are some people who absolutely hate him though(the character, not the comedy he provides). In a way, when it comes to the (low amount of) haters he has, they do admit that he's funny and is a good fighter, but just don't like the character.
Worse Macross series ever. Seriously this got twice as many episodes as frontier, wtf. Even tho frontiers main male lead was a cross dressing kobuki actor he still seemed less gay than the guy on 7. Seriously, compared with the other Macross series, the Seven was poor. I mean, it was so poor that the idea of VF's been controled by guitars was just ignore for the other series.
Also Macross Seven doesnt change much in the story line. I would recommend for those who want to watch Macross, to start from the first, then Retrospective, then Macross Plus, Zero, Frontier and if youre REALLY insterested on MAcross, watch. The best Macross was Zero. In my point of view.

yeah, so sad, I'v watched cartoonnetwork spiral downwards over the past few years, first they moved toonami to saturday only, then it spiraled down more and more, adn then now it jsut sucks. @Cilidar actually it's becausse of big west who owns half the macross rights. Harmony gold only owns rights to their robotech series... everything else is torn between big west and another company.

There's so way they ever will. Harmony Gold pretty much owns the right's to any Macross-based stuff in the US, and the REFUSE to let it be anything other then "Robotech", and actually the costs of buying the license rights to Macross 7's music would be higher then the costs of buying the rights to the show: Fire Bomber's music is EXTREMELY popular, it's got something like eleven albums in Japan.
@dragonknight1984 This is hardly a stand-alone series. It's based on 15+ years (at the time) of previous series and mini-series. Some prior knowledge is fundamental to understanding the premise of Macross 7. Plus the music never feels the same in any English version.
So thrilled that this series is going to be in SRWZ2 Saisei-Hen.

I dunno if it's crap, it's just absurdly derivative.
I've never been a fan of the overly effeminate art style that's become popular since the early 2000's in art style, but what really hurts the show is how it's just a shiner rehash of the original series with more Gundams to sell more toys for almost the first HALF of it.
It definitely picks up in the second half plotwise, with a different plot at least, but it's still too long a wait.
DESTINY is complete shit though.

Not the best of the macross series, but its ok. It starts out very slow. This is more focus on music rather than just a straight drama/action plot, which in some way kind of ruins it,

The series is no good. Sorry. The plot is really, really, really slow. Basara is one of the worst main characters i've ever seen in my whole life. If they speeded up the plot and changed Basara for another guy it could have been a very good anime.

This is my favorite Macross series. The was pretty cliche, but I still think that it was pretty appropriate.

Macross 7 would have been great except for one factor that ruins it: Basara. He is such a angsty unlikeable douche that he ruins the whole series by himself. The music is great and hanging out with Max is cool, but nothing can overcome such a shitty main character.
BTW: There is nothing lame about piloting a mech with a guitar!

@Highstar25 I like death the kid. There are some people who absolutely hate him though(the character, not the comedy he provides). In a way, when it comes to the (low amount of) haters he has, they do admit that he's funny and is a good fighter, but just don't like the character.

Worse Macross series ever. Seriously this got twice as many episodes as frontier, wtf. Even tho frontiers main male lead was a cross dressing kobuki actor he still seemed less gay than the guy on 7. Seriously Max was my favorite from the original macross and I couldn't stand this one enough to get into his story at all. You should be glad adult swim won't play this.

Seriously, compared with the other Macross series, the Seven was poor. I mean, it was so poor that the idea of VF's been controled by guitars was just ignore for the other series.
Also Macross Seven doesnt change much in the story line. I would recommend for those who want to watch Macross, to start from the first, then Retrospective, then Macross Plus, Zero, Frontier and if youre REALLY insterested on MAcross, watch. The best Macross was Zero. In my point of view.

@Horuify Honestly, none of the Macross series'es changed the storyline. VF fighters, singing, dogfights, missile madness are all staples of any Macross show. But I have to agree that 7 had the worst plot.... even so, I <3 the music.

yeah, so sad, I'v watched cartoonnetwork spiral downwards over the past few years, first they moved toonami to saturday only, then it spiraled down more and more, adn then now it jsut sucks. All it is is stuff like total drama island, wtf is that? What happened to the hardcore Gundam, DBZ, Yu Yu hakusho and robotech action (dont bitch about it, because i like both SDF and robo) and the real laughs with things like dexters lab and Ed edd n eddy, now theres this crap taht they have on now.

@Cilidar actually it's becausse of big west who owns half the macross rights. Harmony gold only owns rights to their robotech series... everything else is torn between big west and another company.

There's so way they ever will. Harmony Gold pretty much owns the right's to any Macross-based stuff in the US, and the REFUSE to let it be anything other then "Robotech", and actually the costs of buying the license rights to Macross 7's music would be higher then the costs of buying the rights to the show: Fire Bomber's music is EXTREMELY popular, it's got something like eleven albums in Japan.

@dragonknight1984 This is hardly a stand-alone series. It's based on 15+ years (at the time) of previous series and mini-series. Some prior knowledge is fundamental to understanding the premise of Macross 7. Plus the music never feels the same in any English version.
