Glass can be somewhat predictable on how it flakes, If you want a challenge try quartz, it is brittle but make it right and it turns out strong, but it is very unpredictable.
I have probably been knapping for almost a month or two now, and I have only made one good arrowhead, though I have not tried using modern tools.
@Tacome1942 Would you be willing to make a video showing the technique? I think it would add greatly to the modern paleo skill set if you are willing.
@newcaramrod the thing is, actually. that is how they made them hundreds of years ago. they used glass. obsidian, chert, and other volcanic glasses were used, along with deer antler billets. It's MUCH harder with actual obsidian, and glass is often what's used for people who are just beginning to learn, because it's much easier to not only pressure flake but also to make a platform to start flaking with. Trust me, I know.
sweet i tried on rock and im only twelve years old i made a couple but they sucked the problem is i live in a city so i cant get the rocks but there is a ton of glass so you've inspired me to go get some and make some arrow heads.
i used to be into knapping about a year and a half ago. its a great skill to learn just incase your in an odd situation. i use to go out and find obsidian and i think i used up all the obsidian i could find within a 2 mile radious from my place. but you should try using wine bottle glass its thicker and its less likely to break
hey! man, that's awesome, wonderful job. i think glass knapping is probably easier to pick up than wood working, man, gouges are so expensive and the home depot i found lacks many many hand tools for wood.
+1. I like that youve got a hobby that youre so commited too (unlike me, lol. But i do train martial arts and play airsoft) .. Not everything is about TV and computers! :)
Knapping is what made it possible for humans to take over the world! Band aids are a must and for best results try using copper nails for pressure flaking. The ancients used deer antler, stone and bone for knapping if you want to try "abo". If there are any "knap-ins" in your area I would recommend going. There will be people there instructing, selling tools, stone, and everything else you might need.
Good, but needs a somewhat longer tang, I think.

would these arrow heads shatter if i made some to use for target practice?
loadedClownZ 4 months ago
Nice points...how did you make them using the pliers?
I'm a knapper and would really appreciate the input on how you actually flaked the glass.
Thanks...
Talondas 5 months ago
@Talondas i used the gap on the tip to hook the corners of the glass and the rest is like pressure flaking.
