Great job with this tutorial! Thanks so much. To some having a hard time with the picking pattern - basically a Travis Picking pattern - good to practice :) Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but this helped me get the whole song remembered= Intro, Verse ; Intro, Chorus || Intro, Verse ; Intro Chorus || Intro, Bridge || (2nd chord from bridge), Chorus || Intro x2..... And chordwise the verse=chorus :) Awesome tutorial, thanks again :)
I'm sorry man but this tutorial is way too damn complicated. You say "It's the same picking pattern throughout" but clearly it isn't as you alternate chords. Also, when you first teach the verse you mention 5 chords yet at around 7:50 you clearly play 6 chords.
Most people read tab so put it in tab and maybe then it will make more sense.
@DaHaawk There is, in fact, only one fingerstyle pattern. The actual strings you pluck will vary with certain chords, but the pattern in relation to the position of the notes in the chords does not. In other words, if the pattern was (generically speaking, just for an example) bottom-top-middle-top, you apply that same pattern no matter what strings that corresponds to in a given chord.
thanks for this tutorial. i have a great ear, but checking this out made my life so much easier. I also liked that everything was laid out slowly. i had to work on the finger picking. its a bit tricky to get that fluent rotating sound going, but i FINALLY got it! Had to play it at a wedding, and it went well. thanks again.
Hey that's awesome! Got a question. On the official music video on Youtube it shows the pianist playing the refrain at 3:33. Do you know what those simple notes are for the piano. I figured you would know at least the notes since you know guitar so well. Thanks!
i have the pattern memorized and i still cant play it. its the Fsus2 chord. i even tried the alternate way. maybe in a few years this song will be for me but right now its out of my league :\ hopefully i continue to improve, i would love to be able to play like you
Thanks for taking the time to do such a great lesson. I have a terrible ear for figuring this stuff out but my hands can play it once I learn it. Guys like you keep guys like me playing great music. Thanks again, my friend!!!
I had the same problem, but I finally got it by tuning the first string. then going off of that , 5th fret and 2nd string should sound the same then on from there.
Great vid... just need something confirmed... so you only hit the Low E when playing the intro chords? And move youre thumb down to the A string w/ the rest of the chords? Kinda confusing but getting there.
For the intro: Play A7 with first and third fingers then for the Fsus2 try, middle finger on 6th string F, fourth finger on 4th string F, and first finger on 2nd string C, with open 3rd string G. For the bridge 1st Chord: Try middle finger on 5th string Bflat, fourth finger on 4th string F, and first finger on 2nd string C, with open 3rd string G. Maybe play the following C with first, third and fourth fingers. This is much less of a "twister" and make transitions a breeze
Do you mind if i try to transcribe a tab in your way of playing it? I will give all credit to you but some people might also benefit from a tab as well
i could not get my guitar to go the same sound with yours lol,im gettin frustated no matter how fast i pluck the guitar it still sound shitty,im using a guitar tuner on mine,is yours tuned normally or your droppin it as well as the other guy that posted a tutorial?
Great, fantastic lesson. But there is one problem for beginners with short fingers. I can't play the first chord shape of the verse. (thump on the low e-string) and at the same time the other fingers. And they won't grow anymore. (age 49)
@Thovo61 For anyone having trouble with the Fsus2 chord that I play with my thumb, you can try to finger it a different way. The best alternate way would be: index finger on the 1st fret of the low E string, skip the A string, pinky on the 3rd fret of the D string, G string open, and middle finger on the 1st fret of the B string (skip the high E string too of course). That might still be too much of a stretch, but it's something to try :-)
That chord is tricky for beginners, first you could learn to play it another way, but still practice this way. Eventually your fingers will get used to the stretch, I promise! :) Good luck!
@x1GuitarFreak1x Thank's for your comment. You're absolutely right. Meanwhile it works much better. It takes a little bit time for the change to Fsus2, but every try push`s me forward. THX a lot!
@x1GuitarFreak1x Thanks a lot for your comment. You're absolutely right, meanwhile it works much better. It takes a little bit time for the change to Fsus2, but one day.... THX a lot
@Thovo61 what i do instead is this: middle finger on the 1st fret low E, ring finger on the 3rd fret of the D string, and index finger on the 1st fret of the B string. i find it easier to do it that way, hehe. hope that helps! :)
...Great Job!!..showing the plucking pattern really helps!..tnx:-)

For the intro: Play A7 with first and third fingers then for the Fsus2 try, middle finger on 6th string F, fourth finger on 4th string F, and first finger on 2nd string C, with open 3rd string G. For the bridge 1st Chord: Try middle finger on 5th string Bflat, fourth finger on 4th string F, and first finger on 2nd string C, with open 3rd string G. Maybe play the following C with first, third and fourth fingers. This is much less of a "twister" and make transitions a breeze
