90 degrees is absolutely impossible without throwing it using english. Using this much english on a thin cut is ridiculously hard due to deflection and slippage. In a real game it would be more beneficial to play a safety or go for a different ball/pocket. Absolutely a beautiful shot on the 5th try though.
I got to say I've tried that shot more times than I can count and only made it once any advice would help greatly I think I'm putting to much spin on the ball
I think you can cut slightly more than 90 degrees with some spin. The throw should give you a little more than 90. I don't think this would amount to much, maybe 90.02.
Has anyone ever calculated how much spin effects a shot like this?
@capatainnemo it is an "impossible" cut shot, that's why he has to throw the ball in with english. if someone were to try to cut it in with no spin it would absolutely be impossible
without any english on cueball the extreme thin cut would make the object ball spin to left and throw it off the tangent line to left
but he is putting huge amount of outside english on the cueball(left english in this case) so when it hits the object ball it will elimitate cut throw to left and even possibly making the object ball spin to right thus throwing it off the tangent line to right and in the pocket!
tho im not sure if its 100% 90degree shot but it sure looks like it
always nice to have the cue ball marked so you where to hit it. but at the same time you soooo had to get the object ball movin so much cause you was barely gonna touch it, very nice
Theres no way this is possible the table has to be leaning towards that pocket big time. Think about it when you cut a ball that thin you have to hit it as hard as you can to even get the object ball to roll a couple of inches. He hit it about medium speed and the 5 ball rolled about 2.5 feet into the pocket. 90 degree's is impossible because of the friction of the cueball rubbing across the face of the 5 ball and even if you cut it around 80 degrees you would have to blast the cueball.
Obviously he's putting left on it to reduce the friction between the cueball and object ball but to cut a ball that thin you have to hit it extremely hard. The thinner the cut, the less energy is transferred to the object ball. Get on the table and try it.No matter what spin you use you have to hit it extremely hard to get the five to roll even half that far. His cue ball goes only once around the table after contact which is only soft-medium speed. If very fast cloth then both balls roll farther.
@phdgraffiti that's why he uses the throw effect caused by the cueball when it hits the objectball and drags the objectball with it a while. you can correct it with little outside english but in this case he uses huge amount of outside and followstroke to pocket the ball.
@stardustie Have you actually tried the shot and made it with the balls in the same position as shown?Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. The less of an object ball you hit with the cueball the less energy is transferred to it. Even if you could cut a ball close to 90 degree's there would barely any energy transferred to it. I understand the physics of pool well and often use sidespin to throw the object ball on banks ect. Barely any spin is transferred when less than a quarter ball
man that some fuck up shit it almost seems that u defy physics but it will be a hard shot to really pull it off in one go in a match really well done great shot i might try to play that one day only in practice tho good on u
@aardvaark069 I don't think so. That is an 11mm shaft with no ferrule. Since I'm playing the shot with more side than is ever used in normal pool, a high-squirt shaft would make the aiming much tougher.
@Bob95051 I haven't drawn a diagram but if you know the characteristics of your high squirt shaft then aiming WAY left to compensate should open the angle some little bit. Does this sound right to you?
I am nowhere as good as this guy apparently...but i can do that shot...a whole lotta right english...paired with the very end of the object balls end angle..you damn near need a razorblade like cutting skills ..on a tryout out of 10 shots....id maybe make 3 of them.
As you can see Bob's playing the 5-ball and makes it on the 5th try -- hence, the piece is called "Take Five" (by Dave Brubeck, a local Bay Area guy).
Coincedence....he is shooting the FIVE ball, which took FIVE tries (on video), with Dave Brubeck's background music "Take Five". That would be great to have in one's one pocket arsenal!
I wonder if Bob could do that shot with a regular ferrule?
if so, I was there, at Shoreline Billiards, practicing for the US Amateur championship that weekend, and I thought I saw Bob Jewett on the far side of the room.
It was actually shot the night before, on Tuesday Sep. 16th, (as you can hear I ask Bob how he did in the straight pool league that's always on Tuesdays). I uploaded the video during the night, hence the Sep 17th day-stamp.
wow great shot. im 13 and have been playing for about 6 years. i may try this =]... just learned how to make 8 on break. im up to any challenge and will beat all u 50 year olds that have been playing for ever.
There are ways to break that improve your odds of making the 8 on the break, but it is still luck, not skill, you stupid fuck. Do you gamble? Where do you live? I wanna take your money pussy!
Just because a shot doesn't go every time doesn't mean it's not skillful. But at least you're smart enough to be offensive and wrong on youtube comments, because if you acted like this in a pool hall you would get annihilated.
lol...all the time. that's funny. I wish I shot pool where you live, I'd pay you $100 to get it within 5 tries. More than enough tries for someone who does it "all the time". lol. Can't wait to see some of your videos.

Hard, but nowhere near impossible. Hell, I could do that when I was on a pool league years ago. But, good cut anyways.

@kevsta12 Not that helps the shot. Actually the cue ball is curving away from the object ball, increasing the needed cut angle.
