I think dropping the atomic bombs saved lives, because if the US didn't drop the bombs, an invasion of the Japanese main islands would probably be neccesary, and then a lot of soldiers of both the allies and Japanese would get killed, but also many more Japanese civilians, of which a part would most likely fight against the allies. There's no definitive proof that Truman knew in advance of the Japanese desire to surrender before the second bomb was dropped, considering it occurred about three days after Hiroshima. There's no journal or statement or "magic bullet" that definitively establishes Truman as a psychopath willing to kill Japanese in order to intimidate the Russians (willing to kill them for revenge on the other hand...)

I think dropping the atomic bombs saved lives, because if the US didn't drop the bombs, an invasion of the Japanese main islands would probably be neccesary, and then a lot of soldiers of both the allies and Japanese would get killed, but also many more Japanese civilians, of which a part would most likely fight against the allies. WWII might have continued 'till at least 1946, and costed millions of casualties more, if the two atomic bombs were dropped. I hate weapons of mass destruction, btw.

In the 1960's most southern Democrats were "Dixiecrats" and very conservative. Their political views were much closer to the Republicans and they were opposed to civil rights (like most Republicans). Had it not been for the Civil Was, 100 years earlier, the Dixiecrats would have labeled themselves Republicans and still been opposed to civil rights. I don't think you can make a case that Dixiecratsin the 1960's supported much of the Democrats work to extend the vote to minorities.

There's no definitive proof that Truman knew in advance of the Japanese desire to surrender before the second bomb was dropped, considering it occurred about three days after Hiroshima. There's no journal or statement or "magic bullet" that definitively establishes Truman as a psychopath willing to kill Japanese in order to intimidate the Russians (willing to kill them for revenge on the other hand...)
Also, Truman desegregated the armed forces during Korea so the racism point is nil

I can point to equal studies that say assistance has beneficial effects to counter the negative ones. The Policy Studies Journal examined it and call them incomplete and misleading. A lot of them assume that job levels for the poor would be exactly the same if welfare didnt exist, even though the manufacturing base declined and the working illegal population increased.

Geez, I thought affirmative action meant a racist can't discriminate against a qualified black person. Based on US history up to the 60's, court cases and rulings are what it took to stop the bigots.
Many private companies have affirmative action policies on their own, with no help from the government. It doesnt look good in this diverse nation, for a company to be all-white.

If the GOP is NOT the party of ex-Southern bigots and racists - how come Alan Keyes can't get elected dogcatcher? What's wrong with him? He's black, well educated, articulate, foreign policy experience , he embodies the GOP platform. And no one is more staunchly anti abortion.
The poor man couldn't crack 3% in the GOP Primaries. Geez the party that's 90% white, refusing to nominate a black man? It can't be!

@Hexl702 Well the reason is that he is not a Neo con. Keyes in pretty loud about his views where as mainstream republicans like Palin And MCcain are very careful about what they say. I know a lot of classical conservatives who would vote for Keyes and very few who would vote for Palin again.

The Dems first had a black presidential candidate in 1972, Shirley Chisholm. They first had a black winner in a presidential primary in 1984, Jesse Jackson. They had a black president in 2008. Geez, when do you think the GOP will get around to any of those -- ballpark century estimate, anyone?
The DNC had a black party chairman in 1989, Ron Brown. The GOP finally get one in 2008 but I hear theyre really unhappy with him.
