It's been very commonly established that most serial killers have some kind of personal attachment to the victims of their early crimes.
It's really too bad Kozelk turned into a morbidly depressed Neil Young; this song is one of his few late-period offerings that maintain that incredible combination of morbidity and melody that he established so fluently on the early RHP records.
Having said THAT, he is still a remarkable songwriter and a hell of a singer.
There's no metaphor. It's a modern folk song, and -like many American folk songs- has to do with the willful taking of human life.
The song is sung from the point of view of a serial killer. Hence the "I buried my first victim" line. That is not a metaphorical line, guys. Stop digging so deep.
The trick here is that Kozelek spends the first two verses humanizing the guy, then he throws you for the loop.
Playing music is not about duplicating someone else's performance. I have listened to the original a hundred times or more and this guy is doing a fantastic cover. For you guys to argue it's not right is just freaking lame.
no i really don't. a while back someone said the song was really about drug addiction and i made it too sing songy... i think i'll look it up on the internet machine.
Just found this, makes it feel a bit more poetic and less freaky:
the "I buried my first victim" part is a metaphore. the sub meaning for it is that his relationship with a girl, who was his first love, fell apart. after the relationship ended he ran into some old love letters and he came to the realisation of the love that he lost and missed. this is seen in the next section of the song whith him missing her voice calling to him and that his dreams still haunt him for the loss of love
dude, i'm not hating, but...the chords you are playing are not even close to what Koz is playing. i think the song's in a very /non-standard tuning. and capo'd.
it's not a horrible cover, but i'd listen to the recording again.
This is really well done but I have a hard time getting into it.. maybe its cuz the song is about his wasted years to a drug addiction and this versions pretty upbeat. but hey, ya made it your own and did it well.
I love this video. The poster non-nonchalantly picks up the guitar one day after going to the pool, even failing to put a shirt on. Then he plays a really awesome video of Glenn Tipton and is a semi-YouTube celebrity. Pretty sweet story. YouTube makes dreams come true.
alright alright:) In my defense though, I was simply testing the camera with this take and it ended up being a good cut... I do have this tabbed out if you are interested.
This is excellent. I'm a huge fan of Mark Koselek and have been for about 15 years. I spent the drunkest night of my life with him and Anthony Koutsous of RHP...embarassed the sh*t out of myself too. You've got a great voice.
Excellent! I like your voice and the interpretation is accurate. I love Sun Kil Moon and that's one of my favourite songs. Would love to hear you do more Kozelek. How about Gentle Moon? Keep up the good work.
You had me at the discription of the video. =)

the first time the narrator broke someone's heart, but expressed as a metaphor comparing the narrator to a serial killer

Actually, it's in drop d. Capo on the third fret.
I haven't seen anyone nail how he plays it with the bass progression though. What 2climbis is playing isn't right at all, we agree on that.
