I've been trialling this and am fairly happy with the results. I've noticed two common problems though, one is that audio is being gated (audio frames dropping) in places and occasionally, the video stutters. I can't see anything acknowledging either problem in the Deshaker documentation, do you have any tips?
@cj1000xyu Deshaker doesn't touch the audio, so it should have nothing to do with the dropped audio frames. I have never heard of such problems. If this is in the preview, that just means your computer can't keep up in real-time, but it should come out fine once you save as AVI.
@702lakersfan Deshaker only works with the 32-bit version of VirtualDub. Other than that, I have no advice except to Google whatever error messages you're getting. Good luck.
Big movie studios spend tons of money on robotic steadycams, just stick your camera on top of a broomstick and run deshaker on post and you pretty much get the same results! xD
@minooshka9876 It depends on the video format. Virtualdub has native support only for only some codecs. If you use Virtualdub together with AviSynth, you can open many more formats, like Quicktime.
If you look carefully, you can see nonlinear distortions in the deshaken image. It looks like the image is pulsating. (Such distortions would be extremely difficult to remove.)
@yzarc314 Part of them might be caused by the camera either using a "rolling shutter" (which can be compensated effectively in Deshaker 3.0), and/or the lens suffering from pincushion or barrel distortion, whereby straight lines near the edges of the picture become curved inward or outward. There is a Virtualdub plugin to correct for this as well; to adjust it, shoot a sqaure grid with your cam and tweak the resulting video until the squares are straight all across the frame.
@chrisz78 Wow, thanks so much for the helpful comment! Deshaker 3.0 looks awesome! Is there any particular pincushion/barrel distortion filter you would recommend? Emiliano Ferrari's filter?

Very well done, what parameters you used to stabilize the video?, I have a problem with an issue that I'm doing, and want to know how to achieve that result, thanks.
When I was a kid, I briefly tried to learn to fly RC, but was disappointed by lack of FPV. I never learned to fly, for many years since then, I've fantasized about having a setup exactly like yours. I'm thrilled to see the technology has arrived! Which state are you in?
Virtualdub and the Deshaker plugin are both free, but they are advanced tools. Don't be intimidated, but find some Virtualdub tutorials. Learning Deshaker requires experimentation.
What can I do when my srt file is off; for instance the start time of the DVD I converted to AVI, it has different start times, so all my subtitles off by a second. Is there a way I can start have Virtual Dub start at a designated point that will get the subtitles back in sync?
I've found that to remove the "zoomies" I would run deshaker with the edge compensation set to"NONE [large borders]". Then I would crop the footage to remove the empty borders & then run a resize filter to get back to 1080 x 1920. Works like a charm!
Yeah.. I played with deshaker the other day. Good in theory, not so good for 'production'. It's always better to have good source material without shaking.
Just one time. However, it's a two-pass process: the first pass detects the motion, and the second pass uses the data gathered from the first pass to compensate.
How did u use the dishaker? I try to use it, I open the vid, change settings in the filter in pass 1, then save as avi. After that I open the new avi and change to pass 2 option. Then I get message that "This frame was not processed in pass 1"? What do I do wrong?
Probably your Deshaker "log file" is not being written. I think it defaults to "C:\Deshaker.log". Look for the file to see if it's there, and if it has a bunch of numbers. If you're using Vista and not running as an administrator, you probably don't have permission to write. You may have to change it to something like "C:\Users\YourName\Deshaker.log".
For the longest time, YouTube was blocking this response. Eventually I realized I couldn't directly post a URL. You have to remove the spaces after the periods!

If you can import the corresponding file formats into VirtualDub, then you can Deshake them.
yzarc314 3 years ago
OMG! That is so awesome! I was about to embark on a home brew steady cam project too, good timing for the find!
And Im an avid Virtual Dub and AVISynth user too, I do XviD/MP3 HD up to 1080 no problems, AVI IS NOT DEAD!
By the way folks, if you have not bought a Western Digital "WD TV", you are seriously missing out on a great HD media player!!
Thanks for posting-

A steady cam is still very useful, especially for low light situations. If the individual frames blur in low light, then you're in trouble.
