I did hear on Sportsnight he used to sit in the green room when the sport was being shown and only returned to the studio just before he was needed on air.
If you've ever worked with techies and geeks who like nothing more than to mess around experimenting endlessly with their gadgets, oblivious to everything and everyone else, you can understand an outburst by someone who just wants to 'bloody well' get on with it.
I actually met him in 1988. We were waiting in line to board a plane in Nice. I found him utterly polite and sincere. Regardless of this clip he was brilliantly professional and he set a standard for sport broadcasting that few have been able to match. Happy 85th David!
@simonm7133 I agree, never been a better commentator although a few are on a par or come close. Saying that, I am not sure I would have wanted to work with him though! ;-)
Coleman was always a bit thick. The fact that Private Eye dedicated an entire spot to his terrible commentary literally speaks volumes. I use that term in tribute by the way.
yikes! nasty guy - I bet he never operated a camera, so wouldn't know the complexities and problems that arise. Like a nasty boss who has never done any proper work
@eydiot909 It's not any of the three pieces of music used for the Grandstand theme. This is an audio clip, and the music was used for the BBC's coverage of the 1970 World Cup.
mmmmm....i was rather surprised coleman ranted like this, but on reflection he was a true pro who knew what was best in the studio. feel a bit sorry for the cameraman though!
Since Mr Coleman was in Mexico, the cameraman shown, Doug Watson, wouldn't have been the one he was talking about. In any case he wasn't shouting at the cameraman but Jonathan Martin, the director.
@kisbie Well our Mr Icke did once say that we're being taking over by Lizards taking human form. Don't laugh because Freddie Starr once ate a Hamster - so our David could be right..
How revealing - let's hear more of what TV legends are like off-screen. Don't know what isleofskye clown is on about - bullying is not cool and Colemanballs was as his moniker suggests.
He's having a go at Jonathan Martin - who went on to become his boss. To be fair to Coleman he was so proud of the BBC and always wanted them to be ahead of ITV so he set very high standards. I think he must have pissed many people off though as they just dumped him without fanfare or farewell. Brian Moore was also rumoured to be a bit awkward
And to be fair, "ahead of ITV" is usually where the BBC was when DC was commentating or presenting! If he was so crap, why did so many commentators seek his advice on how to describe a sports event????
@tallzimbo77 Actually, Moore admitted that he was a pain to work with his early years. On R5L's "The Live Obituary Show" (broadcast a year or so before his death, if I recall), he told Jim White that he had spent a lot of time bad-mouthing colleagues in his early years at LWT. He said that he regretted that part of his professional past. It was a very good interview; hopefull they'll repeat it.
God what a mardy, pompous, arrogant twat he really is. Shit commentator also. Always sounded like he'd been at the brandy, unintelligible bollocks. Quite remarkable. Not.
"when you are that good??" He was absolutely crap. His claim to fame was winning the manchester mile in God knows when. As a commentator he was terrible. No reason whatsoever to be mightier than anything
Great piece of audio, heard it a number of times before. I have heard a number of journalists be very critical of David Coleman, some have even called him a bully. But when you are that good at what you do, I suppose you do carry a fair amount of arrogance with you. BBC Sport has never been the same since he reached his peak in the late 80s/early 90s, and since retired.
Actually he was shouting at the director, Jonathan Martin, not the cameraman - and I think this is a compilation of several incidents in the 1968 Olympic games in Mexico.....Still, he was like that!
I wonder what Tyler Durden would have done?

Even David Icke - formerly of BBC Sport, now a purple-tracksuit-clad wannabe prophet - once said that David Coleman was 'strange'!

Actually my attitude has completely changed over the last 40 years since I first worked in 1971.
THEN I would have said "Outrageous!" etc...
NOW? He's absolutely right! In an All-Male environment thats exactly how Men speak to each other to clear the air and move on.
The most successful ( and richest!) Guy I know is always saying "Keep It Simple M8"......he hates anything with "bells and whistles" unnecessarilly.

It was defintiely Mexico . . . but the 1970 World Cup two years later . . . the music was the theme to BBC's World Cup Grandstand that year.
