Yes i agree that john french is a great rider, but the ducking does bug me sometimes. I was just at a horse show in cali that he was also at, and he sped up to an incredibly long distance to the first jump in the derby. He leaned way forward and dropped the horse, and the horse ran out, sending john into the jump.
I do not know the mare that Rumba is out of, but his sire is Carano. Sadly Carano passed a couple of years ago, but he did leave other sons. Chianto, a grand prix jumper, is one example.
The horse is beautiful and a great rider! But I think the release needs work and he looks like he is leaning on the horses neck a little to much. but great horse and great ride!
@Eamloo I'm pretty sure John French knows what he's doing. A release doesn't need to be to a horse's ears for it to be effective. His release is more than adequate, please notice the slack in the reins over each fence. His "leaning", as you called it, though he's obviously very balanced and not using the horses neck to do so, is the hunter style of staying out of the horse's way as much as possible to better show them off. Hunter's is about the horse, not the rider.
GOOD GOD. This horse is a beast! I'm usually oriented around Arabian hunters, and I typically hate when horses have their noses sticking out a foot in front of the vertical, but... WOW. Even with myself just getting into the hobby of following hunters, this is... holy cow. I don't even know what to say.
@eventingwithjohni you're kidding me? You see a video of one of the most respected and awesomest hunter riders and all you ahve to say is that? I'm not coming at your neck, i love eventing,a nd it has nothing to do with what's a better sport in the hrose world, but that's just a bit rude, joke or not.
Rumba is absolutely amazing. He is the textbook definition of a hunter.
John French, on the other hand... well... you can see how his equitation affects Rumba. 4:07 Rumba shakes his head in discomfort after John slams on his back during the landing. I respect a rider of this caliber, but I also am a follower of the "George Morris style of riding." The purpose of good eq. is not just to look pretty, it is to allow the horse to perform at its best without the restriction of the rider.
@SilverStirrupProd well since you're a follower of the "george morris style of riding" i think you should know that george morris himself was a judge in this class and he had ranked them first out of all the top hunters in the country. john's ride allowed the horse to preform at its best. he was soft, quiet and worked WITH the horse and they really trusted each other which allowed the horses talent and athleticism to really shine. i suggest being more educated before criticizing a professional
@SilverStirrupProd, I really think that Rumba wasn't uncomfortable. It was a HUGE distance to a HUGE jump and I think everyone's leg would have slipped a little to that distance and Rumba just got a lil tickle from the spur and he was reacting to that, not discomfort. If Rumba was truly uncomfortable, he would have reacted way worse than just a little head toss. He was just telling us "hey, that was a long distance and I'm enjoying myself big time!" John French is an amazing rider, amazing eq
I love watching amazing hunters, it gives me chills! He is an amazing horse, and John French rode him to incredible distances, even when Rumba changed up the pace a bit! His riding style is utalized to show off Rumba, so that the judge can fully appreciate the jumping style of the horse. Rumba is so...well words cannot describe! He is so incredible and awesome and wow...just wow.
Its amusing how people think that John French needs some lessons.... LOL - Just shows how little some people know. Love this horse! I believe he is up in Canada now a junior down the road bought him....
Such a beautiful expression on top of everything else. He still is like that with his current owner, Destry Spielberg, though not ridden quite as masterfully as John French. Clearly you'd have to be from Hollywood royalty to afford this animal -- haha. Beautiful at every gate, scopey, relaxed -- the whole package!
@KarlyyMiracle Yes, I have. I owned/trained my own horse up to 3'6" as a hunter and eq horse, and he jumped every bit as round as that. However, I had a coach that emphasized the George Morris form of teaching, and that is the style of riding that I most prefer to see and appreciate. This style of riding is incredibly prevalent in the show ring, but incorrect and overly showy, in my opinion. It's just a personal preference
a truly stunning animal. this horse is amazing. Rumba is one of the best movers i have ever seen. and Mr.French and that horse form together as one and are both incredible. good ride!
Wow, not often that you see a horse with that outline, head carriage, and balance in a single-rein bit anymore, no one takes the time to train that! Lovely horse, great rider, fantastic round!
This horse is stunning. Though since I am all about Eq I don't like how he slouches but who am I too say. I don't do Hunters. I do jumpers and hopefully Eq soon. They are a great pair!!!
@OTTBloverMEGAN Agreed, I can't STAND how this guy rides. There is a hilarious blooper video floating around where you can watch him come off... not all horses are quite so willing to go when you get ahead of their motion all the time!
is it just me or do all guy riders all slouch over when they ride? great horse, but i think there were probably riders there with a bit better equitation
@actsix uhhum, did u just diss THE 100k DERBY WINNER? id watch ur mouth if i were u. ID LIKE TO SEE U TRY TO RIDE BETTER THAN HIM! if ur gonna sit on the computer talk like that about him u must have ABSOLUTELY NO LIFE.
Wow!!!!!!!What a good boy! I hope he gets a bag full of carrots! That trot is to dies for! His jump super cute! I love how he carries his head! I don't think his head is rounded as far as I can tell. I actually thinking about buying a greenie for a lot less then he is with that movement and head set. Maybe but that hose kicks butt!
@thebluebot I think that sounds about right. It definitely isn't 9 million for a horse, not even grand prix horses would go for that much all the time.
More than a year -- and many, many viewings later -- I still get a thrill when I watch these rounds. Amazing.... And I agree -- the trot is jaw-dropping!
Rumba is the perfect hunter. He has such a stunning ring presence and he floats around the course. He has a beautiful expression. On a scale of 1-10 his movement is a 100 and his form is round and he is perfectly clean with his front and hind end.
John French did a fantastic job piloting this extremely talented horse.
@zippypony10 Do you see how John jumps kind off on the left side of Rumba's neck? He's asking the horse to land on the right lead. The reason that they sighed is because he landed on the left lead and he might have gotten some points docked for that.
I mean, really.... wow. I'm 55 years old.... I've been riding and watching hunters jump around courses for 50 years..... this horse isn't just brilliant and athletic and beautifully trained..... he's like the Hope Diamond of show horses. If I had 5 million dollars to spend on a horse, and the Horse-Gods said I could buy this horse.... I'd hurt myself trying to get my checkbook out fast enough. You can't breed or train or find horses like this one.... he's pretty darn close to perfect. PERIOD.
Gosh, i just LOVE to watch john french ride. every horse he rides seems to just flow for him, and he's CRAZY accurate to the jumps. and rumba dwarfs these jumps and goes over them like ground poles. just amazing.
This is the Hunter Derby. Therefore, the judge looks at the horse ONLY. Thus, the rider does everything in his power to make the horse look it's best. Isn't it better that he makes sure his release is perfect than if his heels are down?
@WishfulThinking711 he is a hunter rider. of course he doesnt have perfect eq. so shut up and stop talking shit about his eq because you arent even close to half the rider he is.
What an absolutely exquisite animal - Lovely lovely mover, fabulous jumper and completely in tune with the rider.-- willing and wants to please. Once in a lifetime horse. No amount of money would have been too much!!! I could die happy if I owned this wonderful horse!!
The hunters should be required to compete in a setting that resembles that of a hunt...grass, hills, water, trees...but with more finesse and safety than cross country riding. Then the term "hunter" would be more appropriate.
i totally agree. they used to do that a little more a number of years ago, but not much at all anymore. if you were to take most hunters out into an actual hunt field they wouldnt know how to handle it.
i mean who really cares about the amount this horse sold for? i mean look at him! hes absolute perfection! whatever the number is, it was probably very high to match this wonderful animal.
Yes i agree that john french is a great rider, but the ducking does bug me sometimes. I was just at a horse show in cali that he was also at, and he sped up to an incredibly long distance to the first jump in the derby.

Maybe if you go and build one for every horse show out there then they will. Think of the cost to build and maintain that type of hunter field.
