despite my age, this is my absolute faviroute movie living in england means i am only able to wactch this online, i hope that this film is never completly forgotten as its brilliant and i rekonise the refrences to other films e.g. faust, the cabinet of dr caligari, the picture of of dorian grey, phantom of the opera, etc etc.

You have some good cinematographics refrences for your age! congratulations! There is a refrence to Hitchkok's psychose when Beef sings to the shower! in the begining the publishing company called 'Swan Song" but it was the name of Led Zeppelin's one, so De Palma must change it to Death Records! Now I've reviewed it as an adult I appreciate even more the foresight in music/stage this foreshadowed, plus how my own tastes were influenced. Thanks for posting the whole film. As u noticed the writing in the movie is backwards. In the occult teachings the Devil wrote backwards, so it's a nice touch. If it bugs u use a mirror n u can read the reversed words easily. -^..^-

When this film came out in 1976,me and my pal Mark Miura must've wasted a ton of our school lunch money going to the long-gone Park theater in L.A. to see this film--I think we watched it 6 or 7 times the two weeks it was showing there (the co-feature, Embryo, was crap). Still love it. The studio tried to sell it as a spoof, but I think of it as Brian DePalma's love letter to Rock 'n' Roll (using Phantom of the Opera as a template). The actors were perfect. Paul Williams' songs were great. Tops.

@radiof00le That's true, but for some odd reason it didn't make its full run in Los Angeles until 1976. Whether it was a response to its Canadian popularity, or whether it was held back from immediate release in some regions of the country or a screwup on Universal's part it's hard to say.
