will it work if you put the wii controller behind the laptop screen/monitor?

If I understand you correctly then the answer is no. The the Wii controller needs to have a direct line of sight to the IR light. You could put the controller on the other side of a piece of glass or plexi-glass, but a laptop screen would obstruct the view.
