Many of the teachings of the Bible are entirely immoral, such as obliging parents to stone disobedient children to death, and others are plain stupid, such as calling the eating of lobsters and prawns an abomination. You've must of read one of Richard Dawkins books. What you are mentioning are the Laws given to the Levites. You have to realise that these were different times and you have to read scripture in context. Morality only exist if there is an objective moral law giver. Right and wrong is not subject to what causes the most happiness or the least suffering.
You must decide which 'laws' are right and which are wrong. The Bible, Koran and Hindu texts are each full of contradictory (often obscene) 'laws'. How do you choose? You cannot abdicate responsibility for your own moral judgements. Hitler's supporters said they were only following orders - as do the Taliban and Christian fundamentalists. That is not morally acceptable. Since the age of Enlightenment our laws have abandoned bigotry and defended life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Sometimes I wonder what I would do or how I would feel if I met or knew a gay person. I imagian they are not any differant than me as a human or gods child. We would probably both like music, and movies, and T.V.

I try telling them (those who claim sexuality is a choice) this all the time but they'll never understand it. They're too busy deciding what god has to say on the subject. I point out that no matter how I try to choose to be gay I will never choose the guy over the beautiful girl next to him... maybe it's only a choice for those who are born gay? But the choice to live a lie is not a choice of sexuality (as I also try to explain without success) I'm so close to giving up on them.

Not that this has any impact on gay people's right to live however they want in today's society, but in the future it will either be accepted as a physical aspect of people or normal sexual attraction will be imprinted in babies.
I think it's a more understandable than, say, racism. The voice of "gay is not a choice" isn't very loud, so people, as I did when I was a closet-case Bible-thumper (suffering from major depression related to basically lying to myself), assume that it's something poeple do to be different or to be radical. If someone lies to someone who is already having difficulty handling their sexuality and causes that person to suicide, then the person who dumped all sin crap on them is a murderer.

gab197, you have no concept of right and wrong. Something is right if it causes happiness to others and wrong if it causes suffering. Many of the teachings of the Bible are entirely immoral, such as obliging parents to stone disobedient children to death, and others are plain stupid, such as calling the eating of lobsters and prawns an abomination. We have caused centuries of unnecessary suffering by putting biblical dogma before plain compassion, empathy and common sense. Free your mind.

You've must of read one of Richard Dawkins books. What you are mentioning are the Laws given to the Levites. You have to realise that these were different times and you have to read scripture in context. Morality only exist if there is an objective moral law giver. Right and wrong is not subject to what causes the most happiness or the least suffering.

You must decide which 'laws' are right and which are wrong. The Bible, Koran and Hindu texts are each full of contradictory (often obscene) 'laws'. How do you choose? You cannot abdicate responsibility for your own moral judgements. Hitler's supporters said they were only following orders - as do the Taliban and Christian fundamentalists. That is not morally acceptable. Since the age of Enlightenment our laws have abandoned bigotry and defended life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Sometimes I wonder what I would do or how I would feel if I met or knew a gay person. I imagian they are not any differant than me as a human or gods child. We would probably both like music, and movies, and T.V.

Every gay person I've ever met has been a better person than the straights. After thinking about it, that is the truth. Know gay people that there are many out here who think your just lovely, and understand that you are just being yourselves, and that's fine. Good luck to you, and ignore the stupid people.

Thank you for that information. I have a cousin who is gay and love her to death, she too has been plagued with the type of problems listed. Although, I must admit, I don't agree with the gay lifestyle, I do believe that everyone should be loved and respected. Peace.

I try telling them (those who claim sexuality is a choice) this all the time but they'll never understand it. They're too busy deciding what god has to say on the subject. I point out that no matter how I try to choose to be gay I will never choose the guy over the beautiful girl next to him... maybe it's only a choice for those who are born gay? But the choice to live a lie is not a choice of sexuality (as I also try to explain without success) I'm so close to giving up on them.

Don't worry, I'm not giving up on trying to make them realise that people are people and sexuality is no measure of their worth... I'm just close to giving up on believing that I'll ever be able to respect them.
I'm also quite close to giving up on the idea that I'll be able to hug most of the guys I know without them thinking I'm trying to get into their pants (despite being blatantly crazy about women).
But no matter what I do give up on, I'm not going to give up on the idea of equality.

The fact is this. As humans we cant educate anyone who is opposed to the choices or belifes of another. If a person wants to hate then they will. Change of heart only comes from the heart. Live your life and dont be concerned about acceptance from anyone. That is a road that in impossible to navigate.

This week (Jan 2008) Cornish Liberal Democrat Mp (South East Cornwall) has OPPOSED a New British Law which would make it a Criminal Offence to " Incite hatred & violence " against gay persons in the United Kingdom.
A Cornish Christian, a member of British Parliament, like Mr Breed feels it is perfectly OK to encourage people to KILL, Violate & Abuse gay people...if the person carrying out such an Act holds that as a religious view!!!

My friend had a friend whos brother (Im serious, this isnt a cliche) who commited suicide after he found out he was gay. I didnt know the kid, but its still sad.

At the very least future generations will know how sexual attraction works.
While it isn't a choice in adults, we don't know if sexual attraction has learning components or is purely physical at this point.
NewScientist had an interesting article that might be the beginning of an explaination of sexual attraction: "Clue to sexual attraction found in lesbian brain".

Not that this has any impact on gay people's right to live however they want in today's society, but in the future it will either be accepted as a physical aspect of people or normal sexual attraction will be imprinted in babies.

I think it's a more understandable than, say, racism. The voice of "gay is not a choice" isn't very loud, so people, as I did when I was a closet-case Bible-thumper (suffering from major depression related to basically lying to myself), assume that it's something poeple do to be different or to be radical. Most people don't understand because it's not as obvious as how skin pigmentation cannot be changed on a whim (excluding the use of tanning beds ;) ).
