Yep, it takes a lot of practice to be able to do this without making it obvious, and it definitely helps when it's not in a 2d video format.

There was a version I liked better, featured in the movie the illusionist, where he doesn't quite levitate the orange, but slows its fall, which really worked with the suspense he'd built up.

I suggest rigging the orange to a zombie. It'll make it levitate much more visually, although it'll still take practice.
