  • 99 years today since the birth of Eleanor Powell. Thanks Eleanor for all the exhilarating happiness you provided the world with your craft.

  • I liked Glen Ford too,he was a lucky man. Sinatra had him in mind when he sang the words, "she dances overhead, on the ceiling near my bed". Eleanor was the greatest!

  • I always get into trouble with hyperbole when moved by seeming perfection -- you know, world's best, greatest ever, etc. -- but this lady Ms. Powell certainly ranks up there among the best-ever tappers. I saw her movie "Born to Dance" for the first time yesterday and was knocked out by her dance but what impressed me even more was she was so effortless, fluid with the floor, and -- eventually something you cannot manufacture -- she was intoxicated, in the moment of pure rhapsody. What a gift!

  • don't forget Ann Miller

  • hermosa....

  • Few people are as talented as this woman. Every time I see her dancing moves me so much that I like to dance all the time! sorry for not having her own abilities!

  • Why do folk have to die?

  • @YoureAbsolutelyRight You're absolutely right!

    Dear Sgeek,

    (RIP)

    Cheers.

    from,

    del-boy.

  • Ellie autographed for everybody. She became a minister for Unity Church. Her central theme was UNCONDITIONAL LOVE. She practiced what she preached. I have many stories about her.

  • I agree with you 100%. B M of 1940 was the first ever million dollar production of a musical. Honolulu had so many of her great dance routines.

  • Ellie was born prematurely and almost did not make it. She was born without toe nails , finger nails, and eye brows .

  • The well respected conductor Arturo Tuscanini once said " Three things I will carry through life, 1- The glory of a sunset 2- The spendor of the Grand Canyon 3- The dancing of Eleanor Powell. " Hard to argue the point. I will be posting some very interesting stories and facts about Ellie. Do not know which site to use. If somebody wants me to use this site comment. If I get two + comments I will use this one. The more I know about her the more I want to know. She was an amazing woman.

  • What a gal! Yep,thanks You tube.

  • there will never be another eleanor powell - nobody could even come close.god bless her.

  • Ellie is one of my favorites. I have been watching her on youtube. I have not seen her movies but would like to. What movies of her are best or are all great. I am so glad for youtube. I'm 22 and would not have had the chance to watch her dance unless I saw one fo her movies. Thank you youtube.

  • I would recommend Broadway Melody of 1940 and Honolulu as most watchable overall. Many of Ellie's other films are filled with MGM's requisite silliness and the minutes between dance numbers can seem endless. Of course, Ellie's dancing is always superb and you can see most of it here on YouTube, especially numbers that aren't available in movies and that is wonderful! I get DVD's so I can just go straight to her dance numbers most of the time and skip the other stuff.

  • All of Powells films are enjoyable, some more than others. Broadway Melody of 1940 is far and away the best of the lot. Oddly 'Honolulu' isn't on DVD, which was another of her best. The DVD boxed set "Classic Musicals From the Dream Factory, Vol. 3" contains four of her films: Broadway Melody of 1936, Broadway Melody of 1938, Born To Dance, and Lady Be Good. She has one number in the film Thousands Cheer available from TCM and Movies Unlimited.

I once met her and got her autograph !

  • Happy 97th birthday, Ellie! Thanks again for the post EP2007!

  • Eleonor era muito mais talentosa e bonita do que Ann Miller. Ela foi realmente a rainha do sapateado.

  • Eleanor Powell is the best tap dancer ever - graceful, beautiful and just the best tapper that ever was! I agree with Frank Sinatra - we will never see the likes of that dance duo with Fred Astaire again. Thanks you-tube!

  • Yes, we are so lucky that You Tube does so much for our pleasure and gives us the opportunity to look again at such gems ! Thank You !

  • Nan; As Sinatra said " You can wait around and hope but you'll never see the likes of this again" meaning Powell and Astaire. He was right they were the Best but had close competition from Ann Miller and Gene Kelly just as Buddy Rich was Tops but Gene Krupa gave him a run for it. Sadly to-day we have no-one to even come close to these great talents.

  • God, I'm so happy to have joined Youtube and now I can watch all these wonderful musical clips anytime. Watching Fred, Ginger, Eleanor, Jimmy Cagney, Judy, Mickey, etc is like a long cool drink of water for me. It's a shame we don't have this kind of talent today.

  • I agree!

  • To me that still from BM of 36 at about 1:22, perfectly embodies Ellie's dancing on film: ecstatic, graceful, blindingly brilliant. She's one of the few performers who can outsparkle the rhinestones on her costume! Nice to know that she was also a "gem" in her private life. Thanks for sharing your little homage with everyone!

  • so very beautiful baby,

  • She was a VERY beautiful baby; I think she could've done Gerber proud.
