And in 1996 David Goode was in charge of NS and didn't want steam on his tracks. Wick Moorman his successor, does. It's too bad there are no plans for the two Roanoke locomotives at this time. At the time of this doubleheader, there was sort of a "ban" on steam at NS. Now, the "ban" is slowly being lifted for the first time since Dec 1994 when Goode decided to kill the steam program.
Now it seems that NS is finally, since Dec 1994, going to permit and operate steam excursions on its tracks again. 630 and 4501 will be used as part of the new program. I think the first excursions might be this fall with 630, but there hasn't been any announcement yet from either NS or TVRM.
630 is back in service and 4501 should be back by October if all goes well. Hopefully, tear down on 610 will begin real soon, and that she'll be back in time for her 60th in 2012.
Oh God, so now the 630 and 4501 will have to take over for about 4 years. Ah well, hope 630 and 4501 run again. So wait, the TVRM will get the 630 then the 4501? Guess that makes sense being that the 630 is a smaller engine compared to the 4501. Thanks
@WearybottomAssociate thanx. hope they get 4501 up and going again. once they get her running again all they got to do is keep her ry and make sure it doesnt get sticky and it will be ready to go whenever they want for 50 more years!
@nkproad777 yes, 610 will run again, she only had 2 more operating days left anyway before her 1472 day inspection. #630 is the main concern right now, then #4501 will be the main concern, then #610.
Does anyone know the latest about restoration of 4501? I saw her getting worked on a few months ago at the TVRM, but they didn't have an ETA on completion.
I don't have any news on 4501 but to the third quarter 2009 issue of 'Smoke & Cinders', TVRM's newsletter has many good pictures of progress on #630 and they say, "We intend to have #630 under steam next season."
Will #4501 ever run on NS tracks again or just at the TVRM when it's restored? Probably on the Summerville 100 mile trips. I want to get down there someday, it's like the Steamtown of the South. Plus they have the Chattanooga Choo-Choo Hotel at the old station. Why is NS so afraid to operate or let steam onto their lines? Are they afraid of trespassers and foamers who will come out of the woodwork on the day of an excursion? Is it because of higher freight traffic vs. the 1980's-early 90's?
When in servise she was painted black, but when she got put in the Southern Steam Program, they thought that green would be better on her and most of their other operating steamers even they never wore them while in revenue servise. TVRRM, later put her back in black.
@falzonbr According to the folks at TVRM Wick Moorman said there won't be too many, but he said there wouldn't be any public trips. He's a railfan whether he says so or not! :D
Wonderful video! I rode this trip as well as the 610/4501 doubleheaders in 1997 and 1998. I remember being surprised at Grand Junction when the 4501 backed to the train and it was painted Southern freight black! It was a nice change though as it had been painted green for thirty years, although I am still quite fond of the green and gold scheme. Hopefully once SR 630 comes online TVRM will run a 630 and 610 doubleheader, preferably with 630 leading!
Someone should be putting 610 to the test to see what she can REALLY haul, and as for 630, it doesn't matter, as long as my two favorite consilidations doublehead this year :)
I love steam locomotive doubleheaders. Those two make a fantastic doubleheader. They are just about, if not exactly, the same size, and they have great whistles. Long live, the steam locomotive!
Those 2 locomotives are no where near the same size, #4501 is nearly twice the size of #610. In fact just the engine part, without the tender of #4501, is nearly the size of one #610.
ahh i remember chasing those two, probably on that very trip. one of the last times i remember 4501 moving under her own power. kudos to TVRM to putting a roof over her though.
What's up with that high pitched whistle on #610? I think it sounds better with a deep, booming whistle. But I think all steam locomotives sound better like that.

@TVRM610 WHAT?! Please tell me they'll run her again? Cause I really like that 610. Does a good job hauling passengers on the TVRR.

That's definitely a 3 Chime Shortbell, the one that you normally hear from her. You can see this if you look carefully when paused at 1:09.

i think summer because they said 610 and 630 would doublehead this year.

I just got an e-mail from TVRM, they said with all the work still needing to be don, it would probably be 2009.
