This song is supposed to be powerful, not gentle and pretty... A lot of times people mistake when I say that it was a terrible performance with "it's bad singing" when in fact I mean e.g., James Hetfield wouldn't/shouldn't be singing opera... This is why I hate Paul Rodgers for instance. He actually sings quite well but he almost purposely FORCES his invariable style onto EVERY damn Queen song.

Freddie Mercury was one of the few vocal chameleons, especially with such range, power, and beauty.
