bored just surfing and found this I was there what a great day!!!!. Did not know available on dvd anyone else there remeber mike oldfield elkie brookes chas and dave
I miss Brian on all these songs. So sad. Denny has Brian's sad eyes. I just feel... it's not the Beach Boys without Brian. He wrote all these wonderful songs. Having said that, the energy and performance and sound here is great! Just miss Brian, that's all.
@LetThereBeRocker All the early touring by the Beach Boys was minus Brian because of his emotional issues. Brain wrote genius music, but paid the price of being a genius. Carl was truly the heart and soul that kept the BBs together for so long....and Carl was the LAST person who wanted that job, hence his alcohol issues later on when the band was falling apart. Brian's still with us, but gone forever is Carl with the voice of an angel and Denny the ever and over-indulged party animal brother.
This is R'n&B, Rock'n Roll, but on a high level. I love Carl's voice, especially his part from 5:26 to the end. It sounds like a priest preaches the evangelium of Rock & Roll to the audience. Very spiritual and hypnotic. I've never heard him doing that in other performances. Great.
@kingofpecos They used to do that bit at the end in the late 70's and 80's. First time I heard it was on the 76 tv special I have on dvd. Pretty cool part :)
Onstage as the band's frontman of course he MUST be nice, but behind the scenes, that's where things go bad: he was the main oppositor to Brian's innovations -had his will be done, Pet Sounds wouldn't have happened and he succeded in preventing SMILE to be finished. Plus now that the BB have disbanded for good, he still uses the name to promote his act which features no original members than himself (and to an extent, Bruce Johnston). Isn't that enough of a douche?
I still think Mike Love was an integral part of the band, for all of the shit he brought, his role in challenging Brian had it been regulated and not gone out of control, would have been beneficial. Brian was such an eccentric, pop genius as he was, his ideas needed filtering and tuning. Mike Love did a lot of good in this respect, for example with this Good Vibrations, he turned Brian's original, rather self indulgent lyrics into the classic we have now. But no one controlled mike.
@degree7 Although I agree on that one about GV's lyrics being better the ones penned by Mike, the original ones weren't by Brian, but by Tony Asher.
Anyways, I never deneid his role in the band, I just said (and proved) that he was a douche, which was what the original point was all about. Love might be important, but that doesn't mean he's not a jerkass. As you said, Brian's unstable mind needed control, but so did Mike's ego and that where things went bas as there was no one capable to do so.
@degree7 In the book im reading on Dennis Wilson it was the Al Jardine & Mike Love team firmly in the corner of being a complete retrospective band and playing old candy laden hits for cash with Carl & Dennis both wanting to musically explore and Brian more or less a non entity in regards to direction of the band
beach boys are still goin via mike love n a few 20s somthins,,,,,,,,,,,its good hes tryin but how can there be a beach boys without carl wilsons voice????????its like the beatles without john lennon, r.i.p
@suzukinez you cant, its pointless at that point, it was pointless when dennis died. i mean he may have been one of the weakest links when it came to the tunes, but his presence made the beach boys. mike love is a douche, but if he had died (which im not sure even if hes still alive) the band wouldnt be the same. just my opinion
@dwightmolden yeah live wise the 1980 edition was amazing, But in the studio they were churning up buckets of crap one after another (i think 80' marked 3 in a row)
I love this version of the Beach Boys Good Vibrations because both Carl Wilson (who passed away from cancer in 1998 AND Dennis Wilson who drowned in 1983) are in it. Carl Wilson had a beautiful voice.

Mike is awful. This video makes me long for the days when we wore a vest with no shirt and a big ol' beard. At least in the 60s he was owning his wierdness and looking like alladdin.
This is from the Knobworth concert which is available on DVD even here in North America. Last time all the original Beach Boys were together on British Soil.

Yeah, it's a shame Carl or Al Jardine didn't step up and tell Mike to back the fuck off, but oh well, there you have it.
