  • You say you were cold,..what temp was it at night ?

  • U should get an army bivy sleeping systems then u wont be cold. So what is better eno hammocks of hennessy

  • I have a tip for to avoid the cold: bring two sleeping bags with you. Serious. I have one "big" sleeping bag and one thin ultra light. When it's really cold I sleep inside the ultra light, inside the big one. Works for me.

  • you are definitely not a leave no trace kinda crew

  • @grillerblowerupper its funny....cuz you never saw the grounds after they left so how would you know?

  • Will this hold two people? somewhat comfortably?

  • Did you have a sleeping bag ?

  • Uhmm...I gonna say that I think your hammock is waaaay to close to those embers from that fire...lol

  • Look up hammock camping by Shug Emery here on you tube. His solution to thee frozen butt is an "under-quilt" He made his out of down...compact, light weight and very warm. This hangs on the outside of the hammock to prevent compression and maximize warmth. A great idea!

  • i wonder how several layers of newspaper would work under you ?? very light to carry

  • just used the new hyper lite and did so in the snow. mind you, it did not snow when I was there but snow was in pathes on the ground. I slept ok in a north face cats meow, 20. i also have the super shelter inculated bottom on and the top cover all sold by hennessy. on top of all this, i used a short thermarest 1" pad and other than condensation in the morning, it was great

  • also you really have to be careful of mosqiotoes who have no problem biting penetrating through that material, i woke up once after sleeping with my face in the hammock and half my face was COVERED in bites, i looked like two face, didnt go looking for babes that day!

  • Hennessee hammock is awesome, i ived in hawaii for three months relying on mine, sometimes 20 ft up in trees, just be careful of wet canadian coastal conditions, where the moisture in the air can get into anything, that is when i rely on a bivy sack (integral designs or outdoor research) , or combine bivy with the hammock

  • Hi, great review. I'm thinking of getting one of those to do a backpacking trip. Would you recommend hammocks over a tent? And how is the space in the ultralight backpacker? Should I get a expedition or the UL backpacker? Thanks,

  • Nice review. I've been considering getting one. Thanks.

  • just bought the hyperlite model and or this week, when you buy any hammock, they give away the scout model for your kid or wife. great deal. i also bought the 4rth season insulation pack for use in the snow. and the siltarp bigger rain fly to be able to totaly enclose myself in a rain or snow storm. its similar to the clark style but the under pocket is a full size vs. seperate small pockets. this allows for a thermarest or such. cant wait to try it a russian winter in ufa.

  • using a pad in a hammock kinda blows. use it if its what you got, but if you are willing to spend what it costs for a hennessy why not go ahead and get an underquilt? arrowhead designs makes one specificaly designed to fit the hennessy.

  • Nice setup you got there. Thanks for posting

    zoran

  • I made the same mistake...

    cut my AT trip short...

    gotta have a pad...

  • A cheap "blue foam" mattress works well for insulating your back. I sleep on one in mine with a couple of blankets.. most comfortable tent there is.

  • pretty nice hammock, I use a one man tent when i go camping.. How much does one of these bad boys cost?

  • @BeDeCe23 $99.95 -$399.00 depending on the model and they are on sale pretty regularly. Excellent value for your money in my opinion, especially with their 4 season system. I've had mine for 4 years or so.

You can google "hennessy hammock" and check out all the models

  • what i do with my hammock. is get the under kit, it comes with a second bottom and a foam pad to put in between, in MY experience, that foam pad doesn't do shit.. so what i do is take a tarp with a reflective side, and put in in between the two layers reflective side up, it does good to keep your body heat and isn't as finicky as the foam pad

  • I haven't found an insect repellent that keeps flies away, although they do a good job on mosquitoes. But about a year ago, my friend bought a device called a thermacell that keeps all insects away. He let me try it last weekend, and it works great. It really makes your trips more enjoyable.

  • how cold was it and other than that how is it

  • Where'd you buy that poncho? I'm looking for a good one that can double as an emergency shelter but can't seem to find one.

  • @iTek42 At a surplus store in Canada.

  • @iTek42 Google "Sportsman's Blanket"...

  • How well does your hennessy hammock hold up in the rain with just the poncho tarp that comes with it? I bought a hennesy explorer but havnt tried it out yet

  • @windofthegods It's solid and I haven't had any problems with it.

  • When you put your pad/sleeping bag into the hammock, doesn't it block the entrance?

  • If you end up unable to find suitable trees to hang your hammock can you use it on the ground?

  • @XCritonX I've heard of people using these as bivy sacks, but I'd be reluctant to do so. It would cause wear or make holes in the bottom. Thanks.

  • @XCritonX u can use trekking poles but i would only do that if u had too

  • very nice place youre camping at

  • we passed several places on the appy trail where they have been cut down--ropes still around the trees

  • How cold did it get at night.

  • i have an ultralight backpacker. its beautiful.

the expedition seems more durable, thicker wire to hold weight, i wish the backpacker had the same strong cord that the expedition has, thats all.

  • Make yourself a underquilt. Get some rip stop nylon and some down and make it like a sleep back then attach it to the underside of the hammock. The reason to do it on the outside is so you wont compress the quilt and lose the insulating properties.

  • Sleeping the hammock is way better than sleeping on the hard ground. I'm an old lady and can hike for 25 miles a day as long as I have the hammock to sleep in at night. BUT, do take a thermarest or a closed cell pad to keep your bottom bits warm if it is cold. I use a three part sleep system with the hammock to use in three seasons: silk liner, Marmot Pounder sleeping bag, and an Adventure Medical bivvy sack. Mixing those items as needed covers most 3 season weather conditions.

  • how many nights can you sleep in this hammock before your back starts to get sore? Or does it even cause soreness at all?

  • @muetter It dosn't hurt at all! the hamock forms to your back and curvature witch makes it extremely comfortable

  • You're in freezing weather using a hammock and two blankets. Why not pile up layers of pine needles and bivy the hammock? Summertime, use it as a hammock. Nice vid but guys you're packing too much stuff.

  • I agree with you on all counts. We were canoeing and could afford the extra weight. I won't use the Hennessy as a bivy since it might destroy the bottom. Thanks for commenting.

  • i don't know about destroying it, but i imagine that the bottom entry would be a little difficult with it splayed out on the ground, and then you have to lay down and situate it so that the bug net is on top. if i had to go to ground with a hammock, i'd rather have a regular side entry. but i've not been able to break into hammocking yet myself.

  • sugemery here on you tube

He is the hammock expert when it comes to it watch his videos and you will agree he is the king of winter hammock.

  • Thanks for the heads up.

  • What kind of poncho are you using?

  • why only 3 seasons of 4? why wouldnt winter camping work with this?

  • we do have a complete 4 season system, see the hennessyhammock channel for more information

  • I know, I've looked at them on your website for a while now, the way I used to around Xmas when the Sears catalogue was delivered. The challenges I have are budget and bulk. Your winter system looks like it works very effectively though the price puts it out of my range. I already spent $180 plus tax on an ultralight. Also, the bulk of the kit is a concern. I'm experimenting with a sack that can go under the hammock and be stuffed with natural insulation, cardboard, clothing, etc.

  • check out DD Hammocks in GB great kit

  • Winter camping does work in a hammock-if you block the wind blowing under the hammock. Otherwise you'll freeze up like a bridge in winter.

  • what if you were to hang the hammock low enough so you actually rested on the ground. or pitched it using branches or poles? maybe it would be too hard to get into?

  • Some people do use hammocks as bivy sacks, though I've never tried myself. Good question.

  • Great vid!

You guys had a nice setup.

  • learning the hard way is OK but dont take silly risks, being cold is ok for a night but not for a week you soon get a little P***ed off with it,but you live n learn great video...5/5

  • thanks for the review.

  • Question, you know how tents can get wet in the morning, did you have a problem with that at all with this hammock?

  • Cool vid and great demonstration. What type of poncho is that with snaps? Where do I get one? Thanks

  • That's a military poncho. I got mine from a surplus store. It's REALLY heavy but very durable. I may swap it out for a lighter one when I can afford it.

  • Thats funny, in my area Army/Navy stores u cant find the sturdy ones like u have. They just have the lighter ones. Thanks for

the info I may have to try and locate an online source. Again thanks for the reply.

  • Well good lessons, the more you camp the more you figure out. This video is greatly appreciated, great quality, good descriptions, not bad at all. I have ordered two HH this evening and in 3 days.... we are off.

    Thanks Guys!

  • Thanks for commenting. Have a good time. I know you'll sleep well. Let us know if you make a video.

  • I have used two types of HH.

When temperatures warm, it feels good!

  • Love my Hennessy. Get a great sleep every time, but I do use a Thermarest when it's cold. Otherwise you do freeze.

  • Sounds like you've learned the hard way. That kind of lesson isn't easily forgotten is it?

  • is the thermarest in the way when inflated, for entry or exit? I'm about to buy a hammock, leaning towards the hennessy explorer deluxe , but wonder about the entry/exit system????

  • The thermarest and the rest of the sleeping kit must be adjusted when getting in, which isn't difficult. Getting in and out of the hammock is really easy, so don't let that be a concern. Thanks for commenting.

  • i just ordered an explorer deluxe with the larger hex fly this morning, can't wait to try it out, thanks for replying, i like your vids, keep 'em coming

  • my problem is...the tree belts are too short...I have the A-sym and every three is always to big;__;

  • Sounds like you're camping in old-growth forests-nice. You could use a nylon sling made for lifting and towing. They come in all sizes. That would be more weight though.

  • thank you*__*v

  • What's your height, and more specifically, how was that in the ultralight?

  • I'm 5' 10" and there's plenty of room in the ultralight.

  • Thanks for your reply. I'm a fraction over 6-1. Do you think that's pushing it for the 6 foot ultralight?

  • How cold was it getting at night that you were so cold? I'm getting mine in a couple of days and going on a 2 night hike on the AT in the Nantahala Gorge and wondering if I can get away without the mat and just use a sleeping bag. I ordered the Explorer ultralite with the Catenary Camo fly.

  • The temperature dropped to about 3 to 5 degrees Celcius-not sure what that is in Farenheit. Trial and error is the only way I know of when it comes to gear. Chad

  • Nicely done. I've been eying these for awhile now.

  • God daim boy! Haha light wieght baby!! Funny that a therma rest weight 800g can warm you bether than 2kg woolblanket, another blanker 1kg and for some reason you deside wrap the blankets in your poncho hahaha =D Just fooling with you. Its not the clothes that keep you warm! its the warm air trapt inside of them that do. Take the woolblanket only and place in it the bottom. use a super ligtht wieght sleeping bag max:500-700g and best of all warm water in your waterbottle, lay at the cold part! =D

  • Excellent vid! I learned the same way. Took my therma rest on the next trip and slept warm all night. I love the Hennessy. Good job.

  • Enjoyed your video!!
