Lame....especially when he moved into this cheesy scat...dir dir dir....how can someone so great fall so far so fast...and people think this is quality??....ever heard of Ella Fitzgerald?....makes what he is doing look like a sad joke....guess not....this is shameless....that said...his timing is great....but....TOm....please stop this nonsense!
Thank you for posting, I'm so glad to have found Thomas on youtube and even sort of ashamed it has taken me so long. So diverse, this voice could stop wars!
I fancy myself something of a 'jazz guy,' inherently musical and harboring a deep sensitivity to and appreciation of the music and its heritage. This being said, I am moved and rather awed by Thomas Quasthoff in this performance. I adore him in Schubert and Schumann and presently I am just blown the hell out of the stream. Truly, a remarkable musician.
To dantheman513: I have never read a more insensitive comment on YouTube, and that covers some ground. Quasthoff is a testament to artistry and perseverance. I'm a lyric baritone, and trust me, this man is a great artist!! I cannot begin to understand or fully appreciate what he has had to overcome. Ultimately, your comment demeans neither the man nor his gift. It speaks volumes about you, however. And to think you posted your comment twice! Shame on you.

im not mocking his voice. it's amazing. how do you think i've heard of him? i just think that he looks like a dinosaur at 5:00 that's all. a T-Rex to be specific
Well, I don't suppose DFD could sing it, but then why would he want to. Different generations, of course, and I suspect that even had be been born a couple of decades later, he still wouldn't need to "cross over".
I've been a jazz DJ since 1988. To these ears, Quasthoff is one of the most convincing classical singers to cross over into jazz. Absolutely fearless scat singing, and no sense of "opera singer slumming in a jazz club." Looks like Quincy Jones isn't the only "Q" in jazz anymore; can we hope for a Quasthoff jazz CD arranged by Quincy? :-)

This clips proves that opera singers CAN crossover to other genres of music.

Wowee zow!!! He reminds me of Mark Murphy and his scatting is as spot-on as Mel Torme's. He's remarkable and can truly do it all. BRAVO!!
