I don't like what the girls wear, but the guys look amazing. I'd take ANY of them... just because they dress so well. Guys don't care nearly half as much anymore.... :)
lol Not to complete but I'm going to have to drive 16 miles this morning through black ice and snow so rain would be wonderful! OK, BBC. Got it. And I'm with you, not at night. I think even during the day it might creap me out but I'd still like to see the nooks and secret places if there are any. :)
I don't think Henry would have gone along with the general's obvious matchmaking set had it not been Catherine. He was addicted I think! lol And in that place, it must have been very lonely for him and his sister. It's not like they have a happy family life, rich or not. And this actress sure can light up a room. :) I always envied one of my friends who had this kind of complection. She, on the other hand, hated it that she blushed. lol And a comfident man is so appealing. Like Henry.
@wenglishsal lol. OK, you win. I never thought of simply putting in the movie to find this! I'm learning. Thanks Wenglishai. But you see? I hadn't even thought of the movie angle. You did! Won't happen again. Wouldn't it be fun to take a lot of Austenites and go? It's one of my next stops anyway. I've always gone to France before but there are trains, etc. direct from London and it'd be fun to see the country. Eat fish and chips. Some of the young hostels in Ireland are the best. :)
@Songsmirth ... I would also love to have a jolly good snoop around, but definitley NOT at night, the place would give me the heebie-jeebies... But It wasn't the film I googled it was this very BBC production, The picture on the page was of Henry and Catherine, so I knew I had the right one...
Fasinating thing 'google' isn't it... There is indeed a world full of knowledge out there, I was so curious i had to find out..
Henry's statement, "I suppose he has a chance with her" means something far different to how Catherine would take it. She would think the Captain might go after Isabella for marriage but Henry knows(I think he does. What do you think who know the book better?) his brother is only after sex. The Captain sees weakness in Isabella's vainity. She thinks she's so worldy because she's read dirty books and can capture a man's eye. Pathetic. A man like the Captain is all about conquest.
@wenglishsal Just different types of people. Would you want us to all think alike? It would be like going into a garden and seeing all the same colored flowers. . boring. :) This is getting to be a habit on YT. People condemning others for not thinking the same way. Everyone has the right to their own opinion. .
@Songsmirth ... I'm not condeming anyones opinion, I just think who-ever didn't like this is maybe on the wrong page, that's all.. I love all period dramas and would happily watch them all day if I could... As a writer myself, I am open to critic, my proof-readers have told as me as much. So I agree with your views and also lovela colourful garden too... Best regards .. Oh have you seen 'South riding on BBC Sunday night, goning to be another one added to my fav's list I think... :0)x
@wenglishsal Thanks for replying. To play devils advocate, maybe they tried to like this kind of period piece and it just wasn't them! And thank you for telling me about, "South Riding" but I don't have a tv. Do you have any other pieces you would recommend?? Always need new material and I think, I think I've watched most that I know here on YT. I need a new author! lol Nice to meet you Wen. I envy anyone with writing skills. :)
@AVBKansas lol I agree and the one at 2:30 when the general gets C's agreement to going with Henry. She smiles at her until his father turns and looks at him and the smile is wipped off his face. lol / I do wish Henry would have tried to warn Isabella somehow but then, Isabella wouldn't have listened. She would believe it wouldn't happen to her. And C's too young to speak of things like this with Henry and then to Isabella. H's sister wasn't close enough to Isabella either so. .
Since I also wish I've been born two centuries earlier I propose we all try to behave more polite and with honour and be even more gentleman/ladylike like the 18/19th century without losing sense of reality!
...."vampires? please tell me there aren't any vampires, I think I could bear anything but vampires" I love the look she gives him there. A small look for Mr. Tilney into Catherine's great mind :)
I didn't read all the comments but saw the first few with no clue as to part 9. In the boom Miss Tilney asks on behalf of the family if she would like to go to Northanger Abbey to stay for a while, but alas! a plot is in the making...
from what i can gather, i think in part 9 catherine was just invited to northanger abbey, and isabella probably carried on being flirty and annoying. i dont think we missed much! thank goodness. :)
"A chaise and four, how grand" very grand indeed! I read where the estimated cost of a coach and four (matched horses) 3 footmen, a post rider, coachman, liveried outriders, feed, stabling, stable staff, could run up to $100,000.00 per year in today's money. No wonder automobiles were so rapidly adopted.
@georgiaredneck193 ..it has been removed from youtube..i dont know why but it's quite inconvient..we shall have to have read the book to understand what happened..-_-
it is really amazing how very little has changed society, even with all of the technology and liberation it is all "he said" ... "she said"... does he like me ... etc :)
ok..I am completely in love with Henry Tilney..ahha..I'm in love with Mr.Darcy too...ok..I think I'm in love with all Jane Austen's main male heroes..ahhha
Mr. Bingley is my absolute favorite and shortly behind him is Mr. Tilney. Darcy is lovely of course but I don't think I could have the patience with him that Elizabeth has. Elizabeth is just perfect for him.
haha, I love talking about Jane Austen characters as if they were real people
For all the talk about times being so different , some things don't change much. Women still parade around wearing all sorts of contraptions to get men's att'n (from Spanx to 4" heels...& yes, some still wear corsets). Beauties still similarly use it to their advantage. Today's equality seems to be partly that a woman can work hard, buy her own peacock attire & can be financially successful enough to buy her own Manolos, etc., both for her own enjoyment & for greater marketability. LOL
Seems so strange for women at that time - parading around spa towns like Bath like peacocks on show hoping to snare a husband - lives completely reliant on men and maybe what daddy might give you - better hope you were born rich - if not maybe you could do well if you were a beauty - if poor and plain you were sh*t outta luck.
The movies "Vanity Fair" and "The House of Mirth" are good for getting close to the straight dope on what times were really like for women.
Hahaha. You two are so cute!! It all looks charming, but only if you were born into money, otherwise is was really tough living. You might also enjoy Vatel with Gerard Depardieu, and Dangerous Beauty with Catherine McCormack. They're cool period movies, but there's strife in the stories.
@thelatinguru : Yes, you take into account only the pleasant parts of that period, not the bad aspects (less rights than today, prejudices related to fortune and title, no access to education for everyone, etc, etc).
Catherine also was disappointed by its aspect... it's the whole point to show the difference between her imagination and reality.....it was really quite an ordinary mansion in the novel...
Or were vampires already heard of by then, I always thought that all of that came with Bram Stoker to the west world.(england, france, scandinavia.. germany?)
Not at all. Germany had legends of vampires from as early as Charlemagne, but he is referring to vampirism, such as something sucking the life from you. As we use the term "emotional vampire." Et cetera.
the legend of vampires were long ago before Bram Stoker wrote about them- they could be found in the folklore of different cultures from Eastern Europe- which is not quite far from England- the term was mostly identified as a being waking up from death and "sucking" the energy or blood of those alive.
omg, if there was a girl planning on marring my brother, and she would act like that.. i would hit her in the face :O:O or in that time.. just ruing all her chances on having money :D:D
but when you think about it she is really just a horny girl who wants to get it one and when she can't with james (she has to wait the two years) she goes for the next best thing, the captain.
I think it's more with money in view- to be the wife of the heir of Northanger would be quite a lot more attractive than being the wife of a gentleman of only 400 a year. Ofcourse she should have considered er married happiness a quite bit more, her brother was for once right when he spoke about Cap. Tilney, he's a pretty bad choice..
What a house; I love it!!

Isabella.....such a gold-digger! I HATE her.
ybeath529 3 years ago 11
she is quite horrible.
but when you think about it she is really just a horny girl who wants to get it one and when she can't with james (she has to wait the two years) she goes for the next best thing, the captain.

I went there! It's Lismore Castle in Ireland, the Duke of Devonshire's Irish home. It's just as pretty in real life.
