Illinois didn't even deserve to be in the finals in the first place. Arizona had them beat before the refs decided to hand them the game on a silver platter. The NCAA got what they wanted, ultimately, with the Illini/UNC title game. However, once that had been established, Illinois was on their own (no biased refereeing to help them out) and they FAILED to rise to the challenge, proving they were a fluke. Note how quickly they plummeted just a year later.

Um...UNC plays one of, fastest offenses in the country. Illinois had great guards, but trying to run with UNC just speeds up the game which is exactly what Roy Williams wants. May was obviously able to excel in this offense, so running wasn't the solution. He was simply too much to handle. Oh and Jackie Manuel was one of the best perimeter defenders in the country during his tenure at UNC. Hell of a game, and two of the best college teams in recent memory.

I'm not a fan of either of these teams, but the way they allowed Sean May to throw his large amount of weight around in the post and did not penalize him for it was ridiculous. The illini post players were called for numerous ticky tack fouls that prevented them from stopping him.
