Right off, yes there is something very questionable and possibly hypocritical about this. BUT:

1: the explosion used one ounce of fuel for every person that was there. that's far less than most of us burn each day. seeing all this force in one instant brought home the real QUANTITY of energy we use. you may not get the same effect from the video, but it was profound to witness.

2nd: the fuel was donated surplus NASA stock that had simply represented a storage challenge. It isn't gasoline.

Just so you all know the fireball was fueled with a gas and diesel mix salvaged from old boats sunk and sinking is San Francisco Bay..There was also some "new" propane in the mix as well as some stale jp4 from nasa.  I know this to be true because I was the guy who salvaged the fuel and delivered it.

Crude Awakening was an installation art piece during the week. It included half a dozen 50 foot all metal human sculptures in worshipping poses toward the platform. During the entire week the platform was a place you could climb up and get a great view of not only Black Rock City but of the sculptures as they worshipped you. No lives lost.
