@jorgequinterom Yes, there's a switch above the rear shock to set it to hard tail. The shock locks in place. I have noticed on really rocky terrain, the switch will sometimes flip over to lock or unlock.
@jorgequinterom Thanks. It was $1400 with new pedals. Yes, money well spent. I did lot's of research for a full suspension bike with a good price. Giant was a tad bit too high, Specialized too, Trek, Cube, etc.
@rawoctane Yeah, alot of people don't realize that Kona just has an excellent price point. They think that b/c a Kona costs less, then it must be a lesser bike. Many other companies charge hundreds more for their frames with the same parts specs.... Giant and Specialized just happen to be the two most obvious. lol
@skimboonedawg I haven't been out much nor have I been on trails that have big drops. Although I did drop off a 2 foot ledge... and it was like butter. easy. bike didnt flinch neither did i.
Hey i bought the tanuki last weekend at my lbs.. They had the deluxe one in-store but they could order the regular one which was on sale for 1250 not including tax... So now I'm just waiting for it to come in.. I got the 20" frame and i weight about 215 and 6'2''.. i like those plastic pedals too, I'm all for making the bike lighter..
I bought the bike about a month ago and it's a great bike. 18" frame was too cramped for me, but was 20" which fits me better :) Bike shop didn't have the 19" To Tanuki owners...what rear shock pressure ( psi ) are you running? I'm playing with the air pressure and 140 - 150 psi for 25% sag...I weigh roughly 185 lbs and 6' tall
@SomethingGoWrong Great! It's a lot of bike for the money. I'm glad the weather has changed to FALL, now i can ride more and not be out of breath with the summer heat.
@s1lentbutd3adly0 I'm honestly not entirely sure what you are talking about, but I'll take a guess. I imagine that you are talking about how a lot of bikes come stand as 3x9 gear shifting. I'd imagine you can take out the granny on almost all bikes, but I'm not sure why you'd want to on a bike labeled by Kona as XC specific. You could swap out your front and rear for a 2x10 with a 26-39t front and 11-36t rear cassette.
nice review. is it also equipped for freeriding because i'm looking for a bike that can do all terrain xc but also freeride and i'm thinking the tanuki is gonna be it. a stinky would be my second choice but i think that one's freeride only. what do you think?
@xrandolphx the tanuki has a 130mm fork while the stinky has a 160mm fork. The Stinky's headtube looks very strong. The stinky's rear suspension looks similar to the 2010's dawg rear suspension. The dawg is sturdy but heavy. Check out a kona bikeshop and compare the weight of the two bikes. But also I think it comes down to how much you are willing to spend. Big price gap. Kona world says the stinky is an out of bounds/free ride bike. With suspension travel like that... Ha... bomb down any hill
@xrandolphx you should get a bike categorized as "all mountain" I know Kona doesn't really do this, but the Tanuki isn't really a freeride specific bike. A freeride specific bike isn't XC either and they're heavier and harder to get around. I would look into a single crown AM rig with a slacker headtube angle with 6" travel frame.
@Bayplaces hey thanks! and i'm pretty sure you're right about this. i'll look into it. heard good things about canyon bikes, they had a useful table for their bike's categories on their website. i think i'm looking at enduro type bikes.
@FlashbackVisions Thanks! Today I'm taking it to the trail to see how well it performs. The bike came with shimano clipins but I put on those shadow wide grip pedals. Out the door it was $1500. Take a look at the Giant Trance X3. That was the other bike I was considering.
@rawoctane sow how well does it perform? don't you have some outdoor videos? there are only 2 vids with tanuki on youtube:( i'm thinking of getting this one two, but can't deside and there is nowhere to look at it live in our town
@basewilly Unfortunately I dont have a mount nor the right camera to mount it on the kona.... someday. Yeah dude, there are no videos of kona tanuki's on youtube and that's why I decided to make a video. :] I grew up riding specialized hard tails. This full suspension kona tanuki feels right and well balanced. Before riding the kona tanuki I rode the kona dawg. The Dawg makes you feel invincible(plow through anything)
Does it work like a hardtail too?

could you use it for downhill trails?
tashi11253 1 month ago
@tashi11253 How fearless are you? The suspension has great travel. I think I said it has 5 inches of travel, front and rear.

@CloudStrife42 The bike isn't too heavy, it's what you expect from a full suspension mountain bike.

I'm contemplating getting this bike. Are there any customizable gear options for this? Such as an option of front gear as well as rear gear shift?
