Plus, cultural realities can be flexible - a culture can shift, and change, and grow. The medical realities are fixed; non-sterile procedures will always be dangerous, and will always cause some loss of life. Wanga chooses life, and Ninja supports him.

more people are not getting their newborns circumcised nowadays. People are finding out that none of the reasons for circumcisions are true. It really depends on what community you come from. More liberal Xhosa communities will allow you be medically circumcised in a hospital and still let you partake in the rest of the initiation rites and will accept you as a man. Other more conservative and far rural communities of Xhosa will see medical circumcision as a cop-out, cheating and he will still be a boy. If he regularly gets beat up not being a man, I assume he's from a more traditional community.

To the Xhosa, circumcision is only a part of the manhood ritual. Without the additional aspects of the ritual, such as sacrifice, seclusion, and symbolic "purification" of the body (rubbing with ash, painting with clay), the act of circumcision itself would be considered insufficient to confer manhood status.
