  • You folks need to get a clue. The people have already said enough is enough and voted down a tax increase. You need to leave California, but most states are in the same predicament. Tough it out like most other people. Maybe another opportunity will present itself in the future.

  • I wish it could happen but cali is broke as a joke guys are they suppose to pull it out of there asses oh wait i tell you what there is a beautification council that makes cali pretty dispanne that shit so you all can have your scholarships . I am for you guys but cali has made some fucked up mistakes and now its paying or maybe your paying for it in other words.

  • Cal Grant survived!

  • I'm glad to see that other students like myself who rely on financial aid to access higher education are actively engaging with our situation. Keep it up everybody, let's hope for a positive solution.

  • The supreme law of thermo-economics; nothing is for free. Calgrants are like welfare, the money that they gave you to pay for college did not belong to you in the first place, it was stolen from someone else that would be thrown into prison if they didnt pay their taxes. You say: "who cares, I am benefiting." WRONG. As a result of of schools getting "federal"(peoples) money, they can charge 10X more for tuition. Supply&Demand is always your best friend. Eventually this system crashes by itself.

  • Speaking as a UCLA student, this post is an entirely new level of ignorance. Calgrants are NOT welfare - they provide a vital stimulus to our modern economy by sending students to college who would otherwise be unable to afford it. The average college graduate has a salary that is DOUBLE that of a high school graduate. Calgrants are "paid" through higher tax returns to the state. Quit listening to hacks like Rush Limbaugh and get a clue before you post.

  • People need to learn that there are no; "free lunches." If a person wants something, he needs to SAVE his money first, THEN buy it. I've had private conversations with financial aid heads and they have explained to me, out of their own mouths, how the entire financial aid scam works. I am telling you, it is not too different from SOCIALISM; an unsustainable system that eventually MUST collapse. For the average person that has no clue this is crazy, but give it a deep long thought and it will mak

  • Idiot. A college education is not a tangible object meant for consumption, like a car or a house. It is an investment in human capital. The initial payment is made with the expectation that those costs can eventually be recovered over through obtaining a job with higher salary and benefits. Calgrants is not socialism, it is CAPITALISM - the state of CA invests money in college students in order to reap the benefits associated with a highly-skilled workforce (i.e. higher tax returns). Got it?

  • WRONG. A college education is NO different from a Car or a house. You have been conditioned from childhood to think that school is somehow different when it is not. No we are not "human resources" you should be ashamed for considering yourself so low. Once again for the 3rd fucking time, I repeat we must SAVE our money. Begging for Calgrants is like begging to be a debt slave. Think about it sheeps!!!

  • First, drop the conspiracies. You look like a moron. I havent been conditioned to think anything, and Cal Grants are not an evil Marxist plot to destroy the world. Second, your total ignorance regarding what human capital is demonstrates just how unqualified you are to be making observations about this. You might start educating yourself by looking it up on Wikipedia. Third, Cal Grants do NOT turn people into debt slaves. Why? Because they dont have to be repaid, idiot.

  • "Condemnation without investigation is the height of ignorance." - Albert Einstein.

  • "Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the the universe." - Albert Einstein

  • And yes, let's ask the families bringing home paychecks that are just enough to pay the mortgage and put food on the table to somehow magically be able to save $100,000 or more PER CHILD to send them to a UC. Its impossible, and you are ignorant if you think otherwise. Whats next? We should outlaw the public school system because its free? Only the rich should be able to purchase an education? Your logic is infinitely regressive and justifies the destruction of the entire economy.

  • Calgrants allow more students to become educated people of society allowing humanity to progress into a more enlightened state. Not only this, these college graduates will eventually become productive middle-class or upper-class citizens and will pay their taxes to support Calgrants. So the people who receive Calgrants will eventually end up paying for it through taxes just like everyone else. It's not unfair.

  • While there are student loans available, I think many families are worried about taking out too many loans. For example, take that girl that said that her parents worked as a lunchlady and a machinist. According to the UC estimate, you spend about 20k a year. Imagine taking out loans for the amount for 4 years. With today's economy, finding a job would be rather difficult, which prompting the fear in taking out loans because you don't know if you can actually pay them off. Just a thought~

  • uuuhhh, i support cal grants even though i cannot receive any myself. I know that a lot of people need this money to go to college. but to say that you can't attend college next year if there's no more cal grants available is really ridiculous. There are LOANS. plus, half the people i know who receive cal grants are wealthy people who just don't report all their taxes. Not to generalize but I don't think eliminating is the answer. govt should check more thoroughly who needs the $ and who don't.

  • Who is that amazingly hot chick in the black t-shirt?

  • To state that one cannot attend college without Cal Grants is deceitful since there are an array of student loans available.

The funds from Cal Grants should be relocated to decrease the overall cost for all attendees, regardless of income brackets.

Students from low-income parents should demand their state and federal representatives to investment in their parents prosperity rather than plea for charity: paid leave to attend school, English and citizenship classes, job training, etc.

  • University majors outside the hard sciences are the biggest wastes of money. Community colleges are even better as they allow job retraining programs for real skills.

  • wow, your an idiot.

  • Cal grants is "free" money to pay for your college. If one receives, one doesn't have to give back. This is like welfare or social security, just that this is paid by rich taxpayers.

  • I agree, the Cal Grant is like welfare and therefore it is more harmful than beneficial. However rich taxpayers don't pay for it, the middle class pays for it, at 5X the original cost!!! The schools have conditioned people to believe that education should be really expensive, when it should only be about 1/5 of its original cost!!!

At that cost there should be no reason for anyone to be begging for Calgrants.

  • very interesting

  • Cal grants is more than that. There are Cal grants based off finance difficulty and Cal grants based off grades. I get money because I earn it. I go to private school and am a senior. If I don't get my money the last three years were worthless. getting rid of Cal grants is going to push more people into an economy w/out jobs and have those people in debt. I have ten thousand dollars in loans right now, after my SCHOLARSHIP thank you very much, & I deserve to get my degree

  • Also the state pays for plenty of athletes to attend school for little or nothing because they get scholarships to play on a team. if there's anything that should be cut it's unfair treatment such as this and respecting people who work in academia which is the purpose of education

  • myspace/calgrant ... join the movement today to save one of California most precious resource!

  • congratulations, you are one of the few that understands!!!

  • Preparing students for productive futures is a critical mission of our government. It is vital for our state's long-term success that we have an educated, highly skilled workforce that can compete in the global economy. It takes courage to set priorities and stand up for them. Considering new revenues and repealing tax loopholes is part of a responsible budget compromise. To do otherwise would shortchange students in schools today and the future of all Californians.

  • this video is great, I receive Cal Grants and they are important to keep on the budget not just for the students about to graduate from high school now, but for future generations reaching their college years in this bad economy.

  • Wow, I really like this video! I think it's great young people are so involved and taking such a strong stance with this issue... I really believe that this a great opportunity for students and young people to make a difference and guarantee equal access to education in California....

    You rock!

  • This video is absolutely amazing! We need to do everything we can to save Cal Grants. Call Governor Schwarzenegger and tell him not to take away UC funding!
