  • Stealing Portishead much?

  • If you compare this with Glorybox by Portishead, you have to get a lobotomy!!! How the fuck can you compare 2 epics with each other??? Like saying, that you like the voice of Lisa Gerrard better than the voice of Elizabeth Fraser. That is impossible! This is the same...Tricky and Portishead can not be compared, because both are epic and so important for the British music scene in their own way!

  • Wow, this version has sounds taken from Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds. Rad!

  • jeff wayne war of the worlds

  • I don't recall the War of the Worlds sample being in the original !?

  • Very nice lyrics etc....

  • this isn't something you could play live, it's background music, sex music, not something you can sit in an audience and appreciate...

  • I'm totally tripping balls right now. toootally tripping balls.

  • @Fegzy me too : - I

  • i'm sorry but who is that blond twat at the end who made very pretentious (and therefore ridiculous) comment on tricky's masterpiece? great performance of a great track from a landmark album. has maxinquaye been surpassed as far as trip-hop, ambient-pop is concerned? huh...... no (and that was 1994). tricky did get out of his bedroom afterall. so miss blond twat what about you? doing anything particular with your life?

  • Thievery Corporation used this sample too, and it was on a Pharcyde remix too.

    They're all great songs

  • Martina ! :D

  • my god - when she walks in....

  • 2:27 - Ladies & Gentlemen, God is now in the building

  • everyone there is hella high on marijuana or something!!!

  • found this song while shroomin ;)

  • woman is great

  • still i prefer Isaac Hayes' original...

  • best album of the 90s, simple. and i'm in love with martina...

  • I think they slowed it down a bit too much.

  • she can sing pretty good, like a bird...

  • @thewhitezombie666 She's usually better, she was ill and her throat was fucked on the night haha.

  • is she Martina??

  • @MsTalkingbook

    Yes.

  • Brainstormmusik - realnice

  • This song is audio sex.

  • thats the guy from Fifth Element

  • Love love love this song<3

  • Makes me wonder if im high watchin this. Are they??

  • this is my fav song by tricky. Its the sex

  • I love how honest the review is at the end, lol. Great vid!

  • Martina is beautiful on this video.

  • like tricky part gets boring as fuck...thn what ever her first name is bird and makes it so so much better

  • Tricky performs on another dimensiontripping

Anyway hes a pioneer on trip-hop, plus the sound aesthetic is awesome!!

Sth that I havent cleared yet

Who took the melody from whom? Portishead from tricky??

By the end, its a matter of recognition from one artist to the other, and

    Thanks is indeed!

  • @kotsir Tricky from portishead...

  • @Psico5 Didn't they (Portishead & Tricky) take it from Isaac Hayes "Ike's Rap II"?

  • @lobuziak13 yep, its a sample.. but if you look the dates, this version come a little after portishead version... is inspirated..

the version is awesome, to :P

i like more the portishead version

  • @Psico5 OK, Thanks for some information :) I prefer Tricky's version, though Portishead did great job too. Not to mention I. Hayes ;)

Oh, and what about the lyrics? Did Tricky wrote it for MA or did MA let Tricky use their lyrics? Are they still in good relationships?

  • @lobuziak13

Well It Was Said, "Tricky Was Being Lazy At the Time", That's Why The Same Lyrics Are Featured on Massive Attack's Work.

  • @lobuziak13 sure they did, this sample s always linked to portishead in people's mind, but it's isaac hayes that should be thanked

  • @kotsir Not to mention lyrics taken from his time with Massive Attack ;)

  • I'm sorry but this is trippy as fuuuuck

  • why sorry?

  • this song belongs to portishead huh?or im wrong?

  • Yeah. Both Portishead and Tricky sampled Ike's Rap 2. Released albums the same year with the same sample on. Odd coincidence but both sick songs and cool albums. But I'm pretty sure they know each other so they were all probably up gettin' steamed one night listening to the original and both parties though 'ahhhhh'. Safe.

    Rob x

  • Yeah Portishead Even Gives Thanks 2 Tricky on The Thank You's.

    Likewise with Tricky 2 Portishead.

  • The sample is from Isaac Hayes

  • he kinda looks like dave chapelle

  • Great stuff tricky is amazing, shame about the pretentious stuff at the end tony parsons....... blah blaaaaah blah twats.

  • No such thing as "Trip Hop". Dork.

  • i think this is trip hop i found a album with trip hop and that music was the style like this one and the title and genre called trip hop its a bouble cd

  • Fucking awesome!! This track pushed me into the whole Trip-Hop thing!!! Tricky is Superb and Martina.....I bow my head to her!!

  • @gyqz

Please refrain from using the idiotic term "trip hop." It makes you look stupid. "Trip hop" is a term used by stupid, lazy music journalists and clueless record company executives.

  • then what is the correct term? Don't lash out at people calling them stupid just correct the verbage

  • yeh i agree with PatMorrisLives, instead of acting like a smart ass, tell us what the hell the correct term is.

  • This has got to be one of my favourite Trick songs, along with Overcome!

If you like this you should check out Burqa by Constanza on my channel! I think you'll like it....

  • holy balls... why are those critics speaking at the end? you know what's a mood killer? people speaking about music as though it's an intellectual endeavor.

tricky's performance was a little rough around the edges... martina helped smooth it out... but at least they're speaking a language that's more synesthetic than a B.S. rationalization of critiquing 'good' and 'bad' approaches to making music.

go make some art for the love of G-d.

  • yes that is martina

  • yee dude nice performance! i love this video and song is great too

  • Is that Martina? I am confused about this...

  • of course !!! is Martina !!

  • Martina is sooo cool!!!! she didnt sing enough in this video??

  • I think Martina should have done almost all of the vocals all of the time, Tricky is better stickin to making beats.

  • Hmm.. Really? I like tricky's voice. I think they made a good team with Martina.

  • no way - his alien-sounding voice is just right for his trippy music..

their voices mix so well together..made for each other.

  • Agree! His voice is perfect for this music.

  • @CHIWhiteVulture

And Martina is blessed with a beautiful voice but absolutely no songwriting ability whatsoever. I guess that makes them a good pair.

  • this song is for Stoned

  • dear..... but cool ........

  • tricky is cool

  • to think that sshe was only 15 years old there

  • damn, seriously? Are you sure about that??

  • this was on SKINSS iloveitt !

  • martina topley bird is a beatiful woman with a lovely voice!

  • Pure feeling!

  • Boys and gilrs! Respect this song this feeling and the introduce of the singer!

  • This sucks, but the one with Portishead is so hot.

  • Portishead´s version sucks.

  • version of what ? they are both sampled versions of a 70s song..but i guess you just talk withouth knowing all the facts, don't ya know?

  • I just prefer Tricky´s version than Portishead´s Glory box. That´s all.

  • it's the same sample.. different songs.

  • @hanelli08 well nobody´s perfect ;)

  • @hanelli08 Och ! They just used the same sample and came out with two classics ! Had this album pretty much as soon as it was released ! Covered Public Enemys "Black Steel" really well !! Peace Ye`all !!

  • Its not a "version", its a completely different song. They just both happen to sample the Ike's Rap II.

  • TONY Parsons talks of 'black music'. Tricky is a half-caste from an exclusively white council estate. Martina is a middle class (black) girl who went to posh schools. Parsons, you should know better than.

  • I enjoyed the track then the critics just ripped it appart at the end and left me feeling cold.

Why oh why did they have to have a round table discussion on what's good an what's not.

90s music press looks volatile and down right nasty.

Every word that came out of everyones mouth round that table was all bullshit, they were just trying to critique it for the sake of doing so because they were on television.

Music press like this seems to squeeze every last drop of feeling from why you enjoy it

  • hell yea

those white nerdy wannabe boheme shit guys make me go rage

  • They didn't rip it apart, if anything they were speaking positive of it. They are much more intellectual then the turds we have here in America, starting those in rolling stone.

  • They certainly did, even if it was mostly positive.

They should have let it be, i think it spoiled the performence ending the show they way they did.

  • Yeah, I agree plus the Brits get all the good stuff. I mean they have Skins, Tricky and now, I mean right now, they have CharlieIsSoCoolLike...It's not fair. And btw, I'm not being sarcastic. I think we Americans have become lazy (even though most of have already been)

  • could,nt put it better myself, nice one better then the shit in are charts today

  • let us fall off

  • One of the greatest tracks ever - "until then - you have to live with yourself"

Tricky + Portishead + Massive Attack = the Bristol Trinity.

    Holy

  • truth. ;)

I'm so in love with this track...

    mmmmm... so smooth...

  • Absolutly agree to all you said, cyclothymic!

  • ...doesn't deal with hoes, hoods, and bitches"...lol gotta love the Brits..even when criticizing they sound pollite. Tricky is the shyt!!! Knowle West Boy!!!!! from hood to hood angry black music baby!!!

  • yeah its an obvious sample! its not meant to be ripping it off!

  • I swear this is just Glory Box by Portishead.

  • almost the same melody

  • It is indeed. But neither is the two wrote those amazing riffs. Both, Portishead and Massive Attack sampled from 'Ike's Rap II' from Issac Hayes... There you go :)

The original is great too, check it out if you like this.

Back to the roots ! :)

  • critics = wankers

listen to the music, listen to your heart, love what you love, f*ck the critics.

  • Love it!

  • Oh what I would've paid to see these two live.

  • How is this the Brit Awards? Are you sure? Is this not the Mercury Music prize, which it subsequently won??

  • cheers for that was a bit rushed when I put it up!!

  • martina - gorgeous

  • Nah. Bomb like sounds right.

  • when i listen to this song i have to see some nice views , without em it doesnt sound to me

  • SUBLIME!!!

  • Thanks... this is awsome... only thing... why analyze it. you get it or you don't. Brits can just do it like no one else, from the streets to tricky.
