It is not top down knowledge of faces overriding lower sensory processing that makes this work from what I can see. The illusion on this film still works when I cover the face, limiting it to the hat brim only. What destroys the illusion is the edges of the mask rotating to the point of contradicting the default convexness on the shading (highlight is apex, shading recedes in relation to local highlight). It is our mental fixation on faces that label this as a face mask illusion, but it isn't.

This effect is used at the haunted mansion busts that are located at the end of the portrait hallway in Disneyland, and at the library in WDW. They are hollow plastic made busts that when seen like this one, makes us think the 3d busts are "following" us.

@killingspree038 It means your brain is no longer checking reality correctly (or incorrectly in this case). What happens here is that you see the nose of the mask pointing in and your brain immediately says "THAT'S WRONG" and makes it point out. Schizoid's have problems with this check of reality, so they see it as it is. They also, however view their hallucinations are real too. When normal people have some sort of illusion due to LSD, for the most part we understand it is because of the drug.
