Friedman's sheer skill and independence drove Mustaine to play better. yamaha isn't really generic of what most metal drummers use, but i think it gives him a much more tight and focused sound that was awesome for a band as great as megadeth instead of your typical booming drum sound
Damn. You know, I never noticed before, but this drum track has a lot of GROOVE, especially for a metal song. If you listen to anything by Lars Ulrich (yeah, I know, bad comparison), the rhythm is mainly just a bass drum followed by a snare drum. Plus, I've noticed that most drum tracks sound like complete shit without any instruments accompanying them, but this one sounds AWESOME by itself.

Killing is my Business and Peace Sells are classics but what Megadeth as the genius and intelligent shred/melodic band is Mustaine/Friedman/Elefsson/Menza. Current line-up is great as well.
But 1990-1998 line-up is a fkn treasure :)

Dave was taking his lunatic song writing from his Metallica years and pushing it over the top trying to "top" Metallica due to being pissed off at them for kicking him out of the band in 1984. Megadeth wasn't MEGADETH until much later with Rust in Peace and Countdown to Extinction when they stopped trying to be a harder angrier metallica and created music to call their own. So I stand by my statement whole heartedly.

Almost always, if you strip down a drum track like this, and just hear it without any fancy EQs, and with no instruments accompanying it, it sounds terrible and not very rhythmic. Somehow, this sounds amazing.
The moral: if you start with an incredible foundation, you can build an album like Rust in Peace on top of it. If you rely on your EQs and beat-detective programs, forget it.

Sorry, but in my opinion this track proves that Nick's drumming is better then Lars's and betten than Lombardos, but I don;t say that this 2 are bad drummers, they are both really good.

Almost always, if you strip down a drum track like this, and just hear it without any fancy EQs, and with no instruments accompanying it, it sounds terrible and not very rhythmic. Somehow, this sounds amazing.
The moral: if you start with an incredible foundation, you can build an album like Rust in Peace on top of it. If you rely on your EQs and beat-detective programs, forget it.
