Sadly as a black man i find all this unnecessary Disney has always had elements of racism dosent mean we need to over view them everyone can take a lesson from morgan freemans race problem we wont get over it if we dont stop talking about it
but maybe was being to harsh? i mean, should we expect this to compare to beauty and the beast, the hunchback of notre dame? should we expect it to be as evolved as those films and pick up where disney left off? oh, wait, YES WE SHOULD IN EACH AND EVERY WAY POSSIBLE! not lighthearted like disney's older films. tiana isn't special. she's annoying and a buzzkill! did you not pay attention to "when we're human"? her changing her mind about love is a very rational criticism! it's done very poorly.
and the villain has nothing to do with the hero's story. take him out and you'd probably still have the frog story unaltered. yes, his VA is awesome, but he makes jafar look interesting.
characters are given absolutely no time to develop and when tiana changes her mind about love, it's so sudden. the songs are no alan menken shit. hell, menken would spit on these lyrics if he had the chance. steven schwartz would, too. even ashman's awesome self would rise from the grave and destroy the lyrics. the music's not bad. just learn to not be predictable with these songs. dig a little deeper....let me guess.. to find out who you are? yup.
The princess and the frog is an amazing movie, although different then I thought it would be. Also, another thing I didn't expect was that Dr. Facilier was going to be so creepy! Just to prove he is creepy, I watched it at my school, and when he got done singing "Are you ready" or something like that, everyone commented 'creepy'! The music was fabulous and so was the movie! To all Disney haters, you are truely bone heads because Disney is a work of art! DISNEY RULES!
i didnt like it very much my little sis is not aloud to see it cause of the voodoo my mom doesint like that crap so she didint let my sis watch it it was a good story line too it i just wish the didint go over the top with it
I agree with you on Tiana's character. I LOVED her! I loved the fact that they created a character that little girls can actually look up to: a hard working girl, who does anything she can to reach her dreams. It's teaching kids that there are more important things in life than daydreaming about love or guys.
I wish they kept her name as "Maddie". Disney faced too much pressure to change certain things by the public. Maddie is a beautiful name I mean nothing screams French like Maddie which is short for Madeline a French name. Tiana seems too modern for the setting.
If I could pick a few time periods to experience I'd pick
The Glorious Jazz Age Of Nawlins (New Orleans)! Followed by the Flower Power age and the 90's
But they really did a great job capturing a New Orleans folkore (partly true-lore)
THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG DEFINITELY DESERVES THE GOLD FURY AWARD!!THIS MOVIE WAS JUST SO GOOD THAT I THINK I'M EVEN SOMEWHAT OF A FANBOY OF THIS MOVIE.i swear,if they make a direct-to-video sequel of this masterpiece,i am going to lose it!
I saw it on Friday and absolutely loved it. The animation is more beautiful than ever, virtually every one of the characters are both memorable and endearing, and the musical numbers are infectiously catchy. Its one of the relatively few films that Ive given a perfect score to, and aside from Beauty and the Beast and last years Bolt, its probably my favorite film released by Disney Animation.
Well, I have not seen the film yet, I know I'm late people.
But I've heard nothing but positive things about it and I'm so glad because this quality of film making should have never left cinema's in the first place.
I was really debating on whether or not I should even see this movie because Disney has been a huge disappointment over the years, but this clenches it for my, Fury.
Everything you said has actually made me want to see this movie as soon as possible. The nostalgic feeling of the 2-Dimensional hand drawn characters brings me straight to my childhood to the Disney movies I know and love.
Thanks for the review, Fury. Now I;m psyched about seeing this film.
It's already doing pretty well with critics (yourself included), and the only negative ones I've read are the usual writers who rag on Disney and generally misinterpret their work as chauvinistic or racist
Lasseter keeps saying that 2D is coming back, but I see a lot of 3D features on Disney's list, and they plan these way ahead of time.
I think his plans for Disney will only come to light if this film is a financial success. I for one think it will perform pretty well in the box office.
remember when you said in this review that as soon as the film ended, everyone[including yourself]was standing up and clapping?well,I did the exact same thing and guess what,I was mocked by a group of teenagers for it.apparently they don't know how to enjoy a good movie like I do.
It should be every 2 years a hand-drawn film comes out, since it focuses on quality over quantity. All the pre-morten Disney films took that long to make.
great review!!! ooh I can't wait 'til this movie comes out dec.11th. I'm really hoping they do keep with that promise about 2-d animations every two years! I'm really happy to hear that woot(though I wouldn't complain if they made it every year) You just made me way more excited to see this movie, and now I can promise i'm going to see this opening day ;)
but you know as well as i do that pixar is something that me and close generations have grown up with and also pixar has gotten alot of respect for incredible movies like Up, Wally, toystory, rattatuee, finding nemo, and well... the incredibles. i just dont see why they cant manage two seperate movie companies to make thier movies and rake in more cash for them. why must pixar go and leave us stuck with crap companies like sony and dreamworks?
When John Lasseter spoke about the changing trends in future releases, I think he was referring to Disney's slate of computer generated films, not Pixar's. If you take a look at Disney''s lastest efforts, Chicken Little, Tinkerbell, Bolt, Meet the Robinsons, etc., I think Disney is making the right move in releasing hand drawn features to complement Pixar's computer generated ones.
I hear you, Pixar has made it's own special little niche, and I've come to refer to its charming modern realism as "Pixar Magic" although that really comes down to Lasseter's special style.
Disney doesn't have the same technology, skill base or story-makers as Pixar, and it takes a different set of skills to make CGI.
Disney owns Traditional animated features (they invented it). Its where they belong and where they rule.
FURY!!your review of the princess and the frog has made me even more excited to see it!!AND I ALWAYS KNEW DR. FACILIER WAS GOING TO BE A CLASSIC DISNEY VILLAIN!!I can always count on you to give me an idea about how good a movie is.
How do you get into advanced screenings? Are you an "elite" film critic now or do they just have screenings in your area? The closest place that has advanced screenings for me is about 3 hours away. It sucks....
Great review, Fury. I'm very much looking forward to this film. I myself am an absolute lover of art, and I plan on basing my career on it, and of course, 2D animated films is something that I think has had a HUGE influence on me. I love Disney's classic films and consider them a huge part of my childhood, and I really would hate it if this film doesn't turn in a profit. I don't ever want 2D animation to die. Here's hoping for a big comeback from Disney's animation studios.
I haven't wished Disney well in a long time, but I sincerely wish that this movie makes them more money than God, so they finally realize that dropping hand drawn animation for CGI was a huge, f*cking mistake.
To be fair Pixar have done their jobs extremely well, but you're right Hand drawn animation was always king and seeing it in this day and age is a real treat
I wonder when this movie is released? It sounds good, but I wonder would I like it. Very good review there by the way. Keep up the good work. Will you review A Christmas Carol(2009) this year?
Good review. I doubt I'll see this in theaters, I'm just not a big enough fan of Disney, but a friend of mine is and once they buy it on dvd, I'll give it a watch with them.
