Its a bit strange calling the Alabama a "Confederate" ship. The Alabama was built in Liverpool, The crew were from Liverpool. The guns were from Liverpool. After the war the British government had to pay damages to the U.S. government for allowing a British ship to sink so many US ships. The Captain was from Maryland, but everything else, the ship, the men and the guns was "Made in Liverpool".
Better than the Shenendoah who kept on sinking whaling ships ( including 2 owned by my family) and refused to believe that the war was over....even when she received copies of Northern newspapers from obviously distraught Yankee captains about news of Appomatox, and refused to believe them. dismissing them as forgeries! But Raphael Semmes was a good man, and a gentleman.
@prudenceislandboy I believe that one of the ships that was almost sunk was the wh Morgan i went on it in mystic sea port. And i was told it was almost sunk by the C.S.S. Shenandoah. It is amazing they boat is still around today.
During that battle, the Confederates also had the disadvantage of having usured gunpowder...in effect the raider at the beginning of the battle hit the Union vessel with a deadly shot, but the shell failed to explode...
@willembrock Not only that but the Kearsarge was armored while the Alabama was not. Still, given the only other option was to watch his ship rot away in port, Captain Semmes choice to come out and fight was not an unreasonable one.
@BenAliGtor BULL ALIGATOR SHIT,,, the Kearsarge was saved ONLY because the shell that hit her rudder was a dud.The Alabama crew were twice the men that your bluebelly ship or any other yankee bildgebucket ever had.
@BenAliGtor Alabama's crew were mostly European, only the officers and a few of the crew were Americans.Yankees make good sailors,"peckerwoods"not so much
@BenAliGtor. agreed that discipline and training win. the Alabama had both over the kearsarge. She didn't have the wealth and backing that kearsarge had, and one of the results was old powder that cause the first shell that hit either's rudder not to explode...on the Kearsarge. The markmanship belonged to the Alabama as 67 union ships could attest to.
Kesarge, 2×11 in Dahlgren guns, 4×32 lb guns and 1×30-pounder Parrott rifle. (Broadside 464lbs)
Capt Raphael Semmes of the Alabama wrote the book on commerce raiding that was used for the next 100 years. Merchant seamen killed by the Alabama, None.

If only Semmes had replaced the shells and gunpowder. That single, simple, fatal decision was the difference between victory and defeat.
A good tribute, willembrok.

Yes, the CSS Alabama was a great raider. However, against a more disciplined and better trained crew, her defeat by the USS Kearsarge was inevitable.

Sank many a traitor foe to sleep.

Ran to an English fold."

At the time she met the 1500 ton Kearsarge the 1000ton Alabama:
Was worn out.
Her bottom was crusted over with marine growth,
Speed down to 2/3
Armament:
Alabama 1x9" gun, 6x32 lb guns and 1x68 pound gun. (Broadside 274lbs)
Kesarge, 2×11 in Dahlgren guns, 4×32 lb guns and 1×30-pounder Parrott rifle. (Broadside 464lbs)
