The teacher won't deal w. him. My husband & I were called into a meeting w/ 5 other people including a special ed teacher & they're insinuating he has something wrong because he cries & sometimes flaps his arms when he runs & doesn't hold a pencil the way he should, theschool is driving me crazy about this.
Well that speech pathologist should be SHOT for telling those poor parents that! What a horrible thing to tell the parents. My sons absolutely adore me and they are extremely affectionate and loving children. They're not "ill" either.... they are more pure and innocent people than most "normal" people. I think mine have recovered so well and are so loving, because their mom never saw them as sick or abnormal or treated them like they are less than perfect.
Alright. There is a LOT to cover here, and as an autistic, I feel it's my duty to take care of it. First off, that 57% increase in autism is caused by doctors having learned to better diagnosis autism. The same (or near-same) amount of autistic kids were born in 2002. Second, if your child suddenly becomes antisocial, chances are they aren't autistic. Autistic children aren't social to begin with, and a sudden change suggests a more sudden stimuli.
Third, saying that autistic children have no future is laughable bordering on insulting. While it's impossible to fully diagnose someone from beyond the grave, such geniuses as Tesla, Einstein, Darwin and Michelangelo are all considered to have been autistic. An autistic's ability to focus on a task regardless of social distractions could potentially lead to them accomplishing twice the work of any other worker. A future isn't a problem here, barring extreme cases.
Fourth, the concept that an autistic cannot partake in a "normal, healthy, fulfilling life" is understandably distressing to non-autistics. However, children with autism are doing what they want to do. I understand it seems unusual to these parents, but watching wheels spin or sitting alone are actually things which their children consider fulfilling. After all, we all have our interests and pastimes.
Fifth, the phrase "never perform independently" is too vague to refute, but is still misinformation. Saying that an autistic on the heavy end of the Spectrum can't do some things without help may be true, but saying that a regular autistic is incapable of anything is simply not true.
Sixth, if a teacher is questioning your child's ability to learn, autism isn't the immediate answer. It's true that many autistics suffer in school, but I myself have excelled in my academic endeavors. For a teacher to question a student's ability to learn seems quite far-fetched, but I'm assuming that all accounts presented are truthful.
Seventh, wanting "normality" for your presumably autistic child is not a good idea. Trying to force them to conform in order to fit your perceptions of what they should enjoy will make them feel different or significant in a poor way, and could lead to psychological damage.
Eighth, anyone who tells you that an autistic will never care for anyone is lying. Autistics show their affections in a less social manner, but they still feel the same emotions. This is a social and psychological impairment, not a mental or emotional one.
Eighth-part-two, assuming that an autistic cannot love someone because they haven't "learned to love" is silly for reasons I'm sure the rest of this endless string of comments has made clear.
Ninth, "They are desperate. They need help." is hopefully not speaking about autistic children. It's understandable that the parents are desperate for a cure to an "epidemic" they think has seized their children, but the children aren't desperate in the slightest. They percieve themselves as normal, and everyone else as different.
Tenth, searching for a cause of autism in someone's blood is understandable if you don't know what autism is, and claiming that autism is merely a term used to disguise an epidemic is, again, just silly.
Eleventh, saying that these children are ill from facing autistic symptoms rather than autism is highly unlikely. What no one in this video tells you is that autism is a Spectrum. A person can fit anywhere on this Spectrum, and show any number of symptoms of autism, and that person is autistic. Autism is not a single list of symptoms from which there can be no deviation.
Twelfth, the statement "Call it what you want, but don't call it autism." makes no sense in my case because I actually want to call it autism. That's what it is.
Thirteenth, the phrase "There is hope" is insulting. After dragging their children through countless therapies to "normalize" them, having them pricked with needles to check their blood, and then parading them around in front of a camera to spread misinformation, these parents say that there's hope for other autistics, too.
In order to properly simulate my reaction as an autistic, imagine being a dog and seeing an ad about how there's hope that you can be neutered. I don't know what Dr Goldstein's theory is on causation and treatment, but it may be that he is partially right and that his theorized cause works in conjuction with vaccines to creat the perfect storm.

As long as you can catch early and do progressive therapy like speech then the brain can compensate and develop more normally. I had those same symptoms two when I was little, I regressed mentally, didn't eat and didn't socialize. My parents put in me in speech therapy and always worked on my social skills. Without their help, I would be in the Aspergers category. For parents doing these therapies requires time, patience, and of course money.

@leocurythebrazilian ....if you read his book, you will see how his treatment makes sense, and the evidence he has to support it. He very clearly shows through brain scans how children had hypoperfusion (decreased blood flow) to certain areas of the brain before treatment, and how that bloodflow normalized after treatment. If you have a child on the spectrum, you know how emotional it is to watch your child mentally deteriorate right before your eyes. This is the real experience of parents.
These disorders under the blanket of "autism", "ADD/ADHD" or something to that tune... I seriously doubt they're medical in any way, for the most part. Not genetic, not medical—environmental, maybe. The first things they experience. If they get too much of a certain stimulant, like their name being called, they'll learn to tune it out until the sound of it is hardly even background noise. They might be spoiled or neglected. Something like that. But I feel that these disorders are operator error.

Most say they never showed symptoms until later. I knew a kid who had autism and he's probably almost 20 by now. He was ok for the first 3 years and then he totally stopped doing normal things. He was like in his own little world. He's very talented with music..
I've seen his baby pics and videos so there was an obvious difference between when he was an infant and a toddler.
He had a blank stare. No laughter, smiles, or any other form of emotions. When he was younger he would chase the rabbits but that all stopped when the symptoms came along.. He smiles now but in his own little mind.
It's odd. He seems completely normal when he's playing the piano or any other instrument. He listens well, but when you let him do his thing he just laughs randomly and smiles.

I know someone whose son began to put sentences together at a very early age, & then gradually stopped talking. Through an immense amount of 1 on 1 therapy @ the University of Washington, he slowly began to emerge from the autism. Now at age 17, he appears to be a neurologically typical kid. The sensory integration issues are still present to a degree, as is a bit of avoiding eye contact. Yet it's been a long road to recovery. (R.D.I.)

Well that speech pathologist should be SHOT for telling those poor parents that! What a horrible thing to tell the parents. My sons absolutely adore me and they are extremely affectionate and loving children. They're not "ill" either.... they are more pure and innocent people than most "normal" people. I think mine have recovered so well and are so loving, because their mom never saw them as sick or abnormal or treated them like they are less than perfect.

First off, that 57% increase in autism is caused by doctors having learned to better diagnosis autism. The same (or near-same) amount of autistic kids were born in 2002. Second, if your child suddenly becomes antisocial, chances are they aren't autistic. Autistic children aren't social to begin with, and a sudden change suggests a more sudden stimuli.

Third, saying that autistic children have no future is laughable bordering on insulting. While it's impossible to fully diagnose someone from beyond the grave, such geniuses as Tesla, Einstein, Darwin and Michelangelo are all considered to have been autistic. An autistic's ability to focus on a task regardless of social distractions could potentially lead to them accomplishing twice the work of any other worker. A future isn't a problem here, barring extreme cases.

However, children with autism are doing what they want to do. Because my teacher made me talk and I got speech therapy. I developed better than my brother. Who teachers never pushed him to talk. The schools kind of turned a blind eye to my poor brother. They even stopped his speech therapy in middle school. Without telling my parents. Our high school pushed him out saying they there was nothing do for him.

As long as you can catch early and do progressive therapy like speech then the brain can compensate and develop more normally. I had those same symptoms two when I was little, I regressed mentally, didn't eat and didn't socialize. My parents put in me in speech therapy and always worked on my social skills. Without their help, I would be in the Aspergers category. For parents doing these therapies requires time, patience, and of course money.

@leocurythebrazilian ....if you read his book, you will see how his treatment makes sense, and the evidence he has to support it. He very clearly shows through brain scans how children had hypoperfusion (decreased blood flow) to certain areas of the brain before treatment, and how that bloodflow normalized after treatment. If you have a child on the spectrum, you know how emotional it is to watch your child mentally deteriorate right before your eyes. This is the real experience of parents.

These disorders under the blanket of "autism", "ADD/ADHD" or something to that tune... I seriously doubt they're medical in any way, for the most part. Not genetic, not medical—environmental, maybe. The first things they experience. If they get too much of a certain stimulant, like their name being called, they'll learn to tune it out until the sound of it is hardly even background noise. They might be spoiled or neglected. Something like that. But I feel that these disorders are operator error.

Autism is a nice "blanket diagnosis", like ADD/ADHD. It really does bear a harder, closer look at what's going on. There are many other things to investigate, to try and to do. In the end it will bring you where you need to be- closer then ever to your child. And hopefully, your child closer to you.

After a certain point the "servant becomes the master" and that cute little term means absolutely dick, and you're worse than "Aspie". Two other words might describe it better- "malingering" and "malicious". Both of which require effort, but offer one horrific reward if you do it right. And there's no fixing that.

There is autism but autism-like symptoms doesn't mean you certainly have it. Doesn't mean autism is fake though and it's not an epidemic.
My brother was like this when he was younger and so was I a little bit. We went through a traumatic event from domestic violence. My brother shut down, stopped interacting with his peers, didn't do his work. He would go blank.
I was like this too but not as bad. I slowly reconnected and figured my emotions out. It was like rebooting from a computer crash.

Most say they never showed symptoms until later. I knew a kid who had autism and he's probably almost 20 by now. He was ok for the first 3 years and then he totally stopped doing normal things. He was like in his own little world. He's very talented with music..
I've seen his baby pics and videos so there was an obvious difference between when he was an infant and a toddler.

He had a blank stare. No laughter, smiles, or any other form of emotions. When he was younger he would chase the rabbits but that all stopped when the symptoms came along.. He smiles now but in his own little mind.
It's odd. He seems completely normal when he's playing the piano or any other instrument. He listens well, but when you let him do his thing he just laughs randomly and smiles.

My son has been with Dr. G for 4 months now and his progress is nothing short of a miracle. Dr. G is NOT a scam and his research backs him up! @greenappleman7 There is no cure for our disorder, however and I cannot stress this enough, depending on the level of autism and the effectiveness of therapy treatments, autistics can go on to live healthy and fulfilling lives, you were told no lies growing up, but every autistic i know is happy with their disorder (emphasis on the word know, I dont know your personal experiances). Frankly I hope we never find a "cure" for autism, I like being autistic.

@Dexos70 I know (and have known) a number of austistic kids, and for the most part I fully agree with you :) When I say cure I meant "therapy treatments" by which "autistics can go on to live healthy and fulfilling lives" (tp use your words) I didn't actually mean taking away something that is part of everyone (just to varying degrees). By lies, I mean, during 'autism awareness' speeches and stuff at my schools they have never said the part about hope and stuff... I guess I was vague lol

The point this doctor is making is that these children AREN'T actually autistic. They are medically ill; they have all the markers of chronic medical illness, but no one is paying attention.
