I believe what this song is saying that American Christianity is so lukewarm and that we ride the fence so much that we don't even realize it. Jesus and his disciples except Judas gave all they had. Why do you think Jesus chose fisherman, tax collectors, and the poor? Because he knew they had nothing and that if Jesus gave them hope they would go all in. Todays Christians are nothing like what Jesus commands us to be like. We are selfish, lukewarm, and are more concerned about our physical needs.
If a tree bears fruit, its roots are in the soil. Jesus is our soil. Works are the fruit. Not requirements of salvation, but rather proof of it. Thats my interpretation of this song.
This song is making an appropriate attack on Common Christianity. We are more concerned with out 401ks, our auto/home insurance, our education, our careers, and mundane lives to give 100% to the creator and savior of ALL humankind. If you are half-hearted in your christianity then its offensive to HE who gave EVERYTHING for your benefit. If you are only concerned with your safety both physically and economically, then how can God use your selfishness? offended? search yourself and see why.

I believe there is an unbiblical message in this song. To quote the singer " ...you must die to believe.." On the contrary the Bible teaches that the moment we believe in Jesus as our savior we are saved and given new life and as a result we die to the world and live for Jesus. Not only this, but in daily living Jesus supplies us with his Spirit based on the hearing by faith. The singer is confused on salvation and works.
@janedoeloves The message is implying that Jesus wanted His followers to be totally, 100% committed to Him. Leaving everything and following Him. He doesn't want half-hearted people. He wants those of us who have a full heart for Him. Having faith in Him that He will provide for all our needs.
@BubbaJoe8605 If Jesus did not want half hearted people then He would have rejected Peter the apostle, He not only denied Jesus but also fell in the same error later when, fearing the jews, hypocritically withdrew from eating with gentiles. This song is wrong. Jesus does not want half-heartedness in his followers. What this song implies is that we need to meet a certain set of criteria in order to be able to come to Jesus. Nothing could be further from the truth.
@chamzoful If we are to meet a certain set of criteria in order to come to Jesus, then we all failed. Peter did deny him, multiple times, but Jesus, out of love, chose to forgive him. There is nothing we can do to earn God's favor. Christ already did that. And we simply believe that, with all our heart, by His grace, shown to us by His spirit.
@chamzoful With the whole Peter thing, Peter did deny Christ and left him to save himself, but Jesus reinstated him because Peter was willing to lay it all on the line for Jesus. The song isn't about meeting criteria, it's about seeing how incredibly high the stakes are, how Jesus calls you to be all in or not at all, and go for it.
God hates the lukewarm, and this song is about that. Even if you fall flat on your face trying, follow God with everything you have.
@ChrisTheChremo I respectfully disagree. The Lord told the angel of the lukewarm chuch in Rev. he whom I love I chastise. Jesus hates lukewarmness but loves the believer (lukewarm or not). The love of Jesus is precisely why He reprimands believers. I love Mat's songs but in this one he seems(at least to me) to blur the lines between the unchangable promises made by God to the born again and the conditional promises that deal with qualifying for the ministry(whole heartednessbeing one condition) .
@janedoeloves The point Matt Papa is trying to make is you cant live your life how you want it (live a comfy life, living just by works )and that be enough. Matt isnt trying to diss God but is telling the truth. If you want things your way and arent willing to let Him have control, how can you follow Jesus? I mean really follow Jesus? You cant. You have to be willing to let Him have control and trust HIm.

@cyberbace You are right, I think he is saying that; however, this is precisely what I have a problem with. According to my understanding of the Bible, belief (once putting our trust in Jesus Christs death for our sins and resurrection for our justification) produces death to with Christ and resurrection to the new life with Him. Otherwise, Jesus accepting people becomes conditional on their dying to the world first, i.e. salvation by works.
@janedoeloves I agree with you. This song seems to imply that we earn our coming to Jesus. While the Bible teaches that we come as we are to Him by putting our faith in His death and resurection for us, after that He works in us through His holy Spirit to bear fruits that glorify Him and not us.
