The biggest little horse anyone every threw a leg over. Love to watch him in this video, Looks like he is standing in front of a mirrow with that cow. RIP
I helped film this video. Filmed the first part in Tommy Manions backyard . I was standing just to the left, turning back Little Lena, and keeping him contained. I was terrified that he was going to get past me. I was the only barrier between him and the highway.
we lost a great horse with the death of Smart Little Lena. He was a great sire. I own a daughter of Smart LIttle Lena and his half sister (by Doc O' Lena)
we lost a great horse with the death of Smart Little Lena. He was a great sire. I won a daughter of Smart LIttle Lena and his half sister (by Doc O' Lena)
He was murder. None veterinary has the right to put any horse down just because of one stroke. The human being don't have this right ! The Bill Freeman had already pass away, its why this evil veterinary could do that. He never would accept this.
One of the all time greats! An athlete that leaves a legacy behind. Let's not forget that he developed to his full potential due to more than breeding alone. Hats off to the legends of our time!!
What a beautiful, amazing cutting horse. He is just AMAZING. A lot of people dont take this seriously, they are just like "so? its just a horse seperating a cow from a herd." well its much more then that, its about you and your horse loving this wounderful sport, and getting The Thrill Of Cutting.
I'm sure everyone will agree that a big man would not have been riding SLL to a championship finish. When Bill say this horse is everything any rider would want in a horse, he is not really considering what a full sized man would want in a horse.
Smart Little Lena was just 13.3 hands high and not over 900 pounds. A 6'2" rider weighing 240# would have overloaded this horse and prevented him from attaining legend status.
I worked for Bill during this time. Both of them were in a class by themselves.Learned a lot and had the opportunithy to ride some outstanding individuals.Lot of memories here.
I worked for Bill that year and two more. Also for Jim Lee.When they were both at W.Falls Tx.That horse was one of a klind and so was Bill.I learned so much from him and had the opportunity to ride some outstanding individuals. After that all the rest were just that all the rest.
Smart Little Lena is 30 yrs old now....lets give his sons and daughters a go now to take his place he has done a great job...there are plenty of them to carry his name and blood on.
LOL too funny!! there are hundreds of smart little lenas prodegy around here too and I'm in australia! whoop de do you got a granddaughter, or grandson. They sell the sperm frozen. lmao.
Yeh you still cant deny he has an enormous influence in the industry especially his daughters. Highbrow Cats success probably because of his Dams blood! I would have a smart little lena blood in my program any time. Bit like having Spinny bloodlines in Oz heaps of them but sure important blood to have!
@BellavueBWQ Yep, Good point. I believe they are now a little concerned with the breeding here as the lines are becoming too closely bred. I have a little mare with Docs bar (grandsire) lines but she has other great lines that are totally seperate from too. :)
@leilaminette Embryo transfer is contributing to that focusing on too narrow bottom line is going to cause problems need to out cross more on different mare lines. Too much line breeding! Younger unshown mares with good proven lines dont get a chance to prove themselves as broodmares. Many mares dont get a chance to show because they are mares!
Sired by Doc O'Lena 1970 ncha futurity champion, by poco lena also an AQHA cutting champion. Of course this is one of the best bred cutting horses in ncha history!!!
I only needed 50 more dollars to buy his daughter I had 700 and the guy wanted 900, I had him talked down to 800 and he finally decided on 750 my dad was there, he was who wanted a horse, I tried telling him how good a line she was from. He wouldn't do it.
I don't think its all about bloodlines when it comes to good horses.. I mean i have a huge ranch and we have awesome horses that are cow workin suckers but thats just my opinion
at our western stable in wijnandsrade is a daughter and a grandson of smart litle lena and they are also champion in cutting.you can tell it's in thr family
What a beautiful horse, one of those horses that makes every other horses that you own look like nags. pity that the video quality makes everything look like sausages with legs!
Well, I was gonna talk myself outta riding today, but now I'm fired up. Damn, I gotta hook the trailer up though...shit. It's do-able & I'd better hurry if I want to beat the heat here in California.
Awesome horse .. but now the legend will be diluted as this owner is cloning this horse .. 5 colts on the ground now. It's a shame, a disgust, and a depreciation of whatthis horse has accomplished. I hope Mr. Freeman is able to take all his money with him!
wqhorses, Mr. Freeman passed away. Educate yourself before you comment. Also he was against cloning SLL. They did have several cloned but most had defects and i dont think any were every ridden, but I am not sure. SLL is owned by a syndicate not B.F.
I hope Mr. Freeman rests well, but take a read my friend ... and let me educate you just a bit:
This is not quite accurate, according to Dr. Katrin Hinrichs, DVM, PhD, veterinarian and professor at the Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine. Hinrichs started TAMUs Equine Embryo Laboratory in 1999, and has specialized in equine reproduction since her residency at the University of Pennsylvania in 1982.
Hinrichs team first began equine cloning research in 1999, but their studies were experimental. Hinrichs team produced their first cloned horse embryo late in 1999. The embryo had only five cells, but it was a big step for the clinic. By 2004, the team was able to transfer approximately two to three percent of their embryos into recipient mares. One of these embryos eventually became Paris Texas.
You are right, I was wrong. Yes it was B.F. who advocated to clone SSL. but after his five clones were born I am still sure that none were ever ridden and that 1 was not even going to be used in breeding. If I am not mistaken there was a big lawsuit between the owners as to how they would split ownership of the clones. I am not sure how it turned out.
Regaurdless of if A&M are cloning legends or not, none of the stock that is sired by these clones can be registered and thus can not compete against SLL's actual off spring...
The offspring cannot be registered with AQHA- YET! All it takes is for the AQHA to figure out that they can make money with clones - and it will be a done deal. They are already discussing cloning in their meetings. But the NCHA does not "register" horses - so these clones can and will be shown.
I was talking about futurities... I'm quiet aware that horses don't have to be registered with the NCHA, its just like any other organization like the NBHA ect ect ect. And yes they are discussing it, they have to its happening and it will effect the stock they register. As of now their stance does not allow them to be resgistered since there have only been a handful. They are going to vote on the issue in 2010.
The horses are genetically identical and if they are registered, they will be passing on the same genetics the orginial horse was. Nothing that they experience will change those genetics. The clones have the oppurtunity to go on and be bigger and better then the orginal and if the horse happened to be cut, cloning would be a chance to pass on genetics that wouldn't otherwise have been avaible. Besides, your not going to be looking at thousands a year, its much to expensive for that.
I am a breeder of performance Quarter Horses. A small breeder. It is difiicult enough to try and compete with the larger breeders without having clones registerd. The fact that they can clone does not mean that it is right. I believe it is bad for the American Quarter Horse on so many levels. I love Smart Little Lena. I own granddaughters of Smart Little Lena. However, I don't want to linebred with Smart Little Lena for obvious reasons.
My family used to raise halter horses. If you have great stock and your stock is making a name for itself, you'll always have a market. I agree that line breeding can be extremely bad if done in the wrong hands, but if done properly you can get a fantastic horse.
You and me both!I have a grand daughter of smart little lena to she is so amazing, but im with you when it comes to not wanting clones out there. Keep the gene pool fresh, with new lines.
our ranch only purcheses horses by Two eyed Jack, Dash for Cash, Blue Valintine, Joe Hancock or any stallions of geldings among those blood line. all i wish for is that those legendary quarter horses will live again
im a big fan of Doc O'Lena so the second this horse came out i was all eyes on him. we actually have a big gelding sired by doc o'lena and my horse is an amazing horse. some people don't agree with me but i think that pedigree is the most important thing to our ranch. but yes the horses heart is a very inportant thing to, and so is pedigree.
I agree with what you said somewhat but if what you said is true about the pedigree then horses like Fillinic who is perhaps one of the greatest Reined Cowhorses of all times, and certainly one of the greatest producing dams, (with a completely unknown pedigree) would be overlooked. It is definitely a combination of heart and pedigree. I know horses that are not technically correct in maneuvers but have the heart to win and they do.
Lena is a great one alright but I heard he passed away in 2008. Does anyone know? I've looked everywhere on this. I saw the last of a obituary on RFDTV about someone or horse passing away in 2008 but it may have been talking about Bill Freeman and Bill riding Smart Little Lena in the 1982 finals at Will Rogers at Ft Worth.
I'm sorry Bill has passed on. He was so young and we will miss him. Bill and a friend of mine have one of his sons, WILD THING DNA, standing in Texas. His babies are fantastic! I love this video! Thanks for sharing it.
i have one of his great grandsons! ^^ you can really see the resemblance in them - he spooks just like smart little lena cuts. XD but seriously, he's a great jumper. he really loves to jump and will jump just about anything you put infront of him.
I am not 100% sure but last I heard he is still alive (or they are using his semen to artificially inseminate) and he is still producing colts. Cost of that semen would be unbelievable, most likely in the 100 thousands of dollars or much much more... his stud fee has been private treaty for a good many years
Yeah I think he is I got on his farms website and they said he sires 50 foals a year, and they didn't say anything about him being dead so I don't doubt it that he is still alive.
coz in australia, anything with "oak" in its name is from "docs smarty oak" and they are suuucchhh good horses, anything out of him is worth a fortune.
OMG! The Doc Olena line still proves that this line of horses is excellent--all ancestors are top and intelligent horses. I have ridden 1 Olena quarterhorse and she was spectacular in her eagerness to learn and work! The background music is a cut from "HOW THE WEST WAS ONE" I think!
There is nothing better than this legend. His sons, and daughters are exceptional producers, the cow sense and presence. Smart chic olena, and many others sons of him have demostrated the Performance avility and beauty.
ive got a grandson a young yearling thats looking for a good open career..docs little sidekick is his name..same here...all i can say is we put him in the roundpen yesterday, and he quietly took up behind the cows and pushed em around.. then he cut half the herd and loped em back around the pen.. what a brain he has..
Well the guy who is starting her under saddle for me. Didnt believe she would cut. HE had a couple goats in his arena. He turned her loose. SHe rounded em up. They could run under the rail or she would have cornerd them naturally....
Cant wait to get her home and see what she does with cows.... LOL
this is one of the greatest cutting ,reining, reined cowhorse producers in the industry i am proud to have a few of them. they are the easiest training a person could ask for
I agree with you for the most part...except for being easy to train. We have one and he's almost too smart for his own good. But once he's over that he'll be amazing.
I have a grandson that i use for Team Penning who is absolutely amazing. He is out of Smart Lil Richochet and truly gets his cow sense form the top side.
This horse is awesome just watch how he looks straight through the cattle it is increddible...this horse is amazing and will always be a legend.
I have a horse who is the the son of smart little lena!He has the best personallity. He is the penner a whole lot better than me.He is awesome i can just go out to the pasture and hop on him bare back and ride him around the yard or take him to the arena ,or evan take him on trail ride he is multiprupose.
My nephew has a bay gelding a grandson out of smart little lena. My nephew uses him in team penning he is awesome such a sweetheart. My nephew won alot of awares and money from his gelding. His name is Rick Caddy but he calls him RC. But it is quite a horse with a big heart.
Most people say how they wish they had "Doc" this or "Lena" that but not me, i would never trade my horse dusty, yes he may not be as great as "Smart Little Lena" but he gets his job done and does what he is asked and always puts 100% heart in every thing he does:)
really, which of his daughters do you own? If i ever got to see one of his offspring *other then Smart Murdu *spelling?* his grand daughter, I'd be happy
The biggest little horse anyone every threw a leg over. Love to watch him in this video, Looks like he is standing in front of a mirrow with that cow. RIP

How much is his stud fee? Its gotta be expensive, He is an awsome horse!
kitscharging 3 years ago
I am not 100% sure but last I heard he is still alive (or they are using his semen to artificially inseminate) and he is still producing colts. Cost of that semen would be unbelievable, most likely in the 100 thousands of dollars or much much more... his stud fee has been private treaty for a good many years
coonhoundlas 3 years ago
Yeah I think he is I got on his farms website and they said he sires 50 foals a year, and they didn't say anything about him being dead so I don't doubt it that he is still alive.

What's the name of background music?
Thanks in advance.

I helped make that video, in the opening scene, I am just to the left off camera, waving my hat at Little Lena to get him to run around.
Thats in Aubry Texas in Tommy Manions back yard.

ive got a grandson a young yearling thats looking for a good open career..docs little sidekick is his name..same here...all i can say is we put him in the roundpen yesterday, and he quietly took up behind the cows and pushed em around.. then he cut half the herd and loped em back around the pen.. what a brain he has..
booboo11560 3 years ago
Well the guy who is starting her under saddle for me. Didnt believe she would cut. HE had a couple goats in his arena. He turned her loose. SHe rounded em up. They could run under the rail or she would have cornerd them naturally....
Cant wait to get her home and see what she does with cows.... LOL

this is one of the greatest cutting ,reining, reined cowhorse producers in the industry i am proud to have a few of them. they are the easiest training a person could ask for
silveroakranch 4 years ago
I agree with you for the most part...except for being easy to train. We have one and he's almost too smart for his own good. But once he's over that he'll be amazing.

Most people say how they wish they had "Doc" this or "Lena" that but not me, i would never trade my horse dusty, yes he may not be as great as "Smart Little Lena" but he gets his job done and does what he is asked and always puts 100% heart in every thing he does:)
