and people actually didn't like the film because they though she pretended to be her mother!! that is so not true!!! what we just saw was liza minnelli singing, and not judy garland (even though judy garland was also an amazing singer too)
I saw her do this song last summer In Canada, and Ill tell you she is still a force. She belted this song out with the energy of a gathering hurricane and blew the house away with this number. No cheating on notes at all, its still there. She nailed it and left no doubt as to why she has the star status that she rightfully deserves.
scorsese's most overlooked film. but, all musicals were minimalized in the 70's; too bad, this is a great one. thankfully, we can all experience it now and enjoy it as the great film it is.
@Antinous - I was referring to that bizarre marriage and all the weird behavior in the press at the time. Man, I wasn't born yesterday. Crazy or drugs, you pick.
But don't get me wrong - I don't want it to be so! I always preferred her to her Mom.
@jamesleejobe Yes...Her marriage to David Gest was very strange and a mistake for her. I don't believe all the lies they printed about her though. She never sexually harassed anyone, her driver is a fucking liar. Liza has been clean for years, she gave up drugs, got help for her addictions and is now healthy and happy :). I love Judy as well as Liza and personally I prefer Judy but Liza's a close second.
@jamesleejobe How is Liza crazy? :S. I saw her in concert last year and she was great. She's like the cool grandma everyone wishes they could have, so warm and funny :)
@jamesleejobe Truth is,she has gotten older and her voice has matured. At 3:34 liza resembles her mother(Judy) and although her voice is distinctively her own, it has the power of her mother . I adore them both and applaud the fact that liza has received professional help, There wasn't Betty Ford centers and others when Judy was going through her addictons ,only places to dry out or receive pschiatric help.. We must have compassion for them both and everyone who struggles with addictions.

if you like this, the you've got to watch and lsiten on youtibe to her 1980 "Liza in New Orleans" version. Richer tone and more emotion throughout the entire song as opposed to just the end
A song full of Hope and Faith..One of the best performance by Liza..She's thrilling..I know another artist who's thrillin' too..He's MO'SEAN with "Give You My Soul"...I can't wait 'bout his album...This artist has a natural emotion in the interpretation, and a great zenitude in his behavior..Thanks YOUTUBE for these good good finds!!!
When I saw "Cabaret " in '72, I fell in instant love and worship with Liza and "Maybe This Time" became my theme song of all time- until five years later when I saw her do this number in "New York, New York". I realized at once that this was her greatest number and ever since "But the World Goes 'Round" is my favorite of all.
When "Brokeback Mountain" lost the Oscar I was devastated but not as furious as I was in '78 when this song and "N.Y.,N.Y." were completely ignored by the Academy. Shame!
@SandViolet Ugh, tell me about it. I can't believe 'New York, New York' didn't get Liza a second Oscar for Best Actress! It's amazing. The Academy Awards are all rigged. Liza lost for this just like Judy lost for 'A Star Is Born'. What is wrong with the judges!?
How Brilliant is this woman !!?? what a powerful Voice !!! Just like her mother Judy , her "Star" will shine for all times !!! ten Stars*****.... little paulo Cristo :-D
Probably my favorite clip from NYNY. And I love how Liza gives homage, intentionally or otherwise, to mom Judy who performed a similar single-take number (and from practically the same camera angle) in "I Could go on Singing."
@fanliza In what way? Scorsese set this up a single shot. She did it. That's how she sings it live - how is it brave for her to do the same thing on film? If the shot went wrong, then they'd simply do another take. Maybe you're referring to the CHOICE to do the song live, rather than lip synching to a pre-recorded track? I'm a fan but this doesn't take guts. This takes professionalism. Placido Domingo did an entire filmed opera this way; worldwide and in a live broadcast.

Simply Divine. Not one of today's popular female singers can compare (in my opinion) ... no offence meant to them or their other's fans.

She had her Mom's pipes and a lot more acting talent. What happened? Now she seems so f-ing crazy.
This is one of the best numbers ever put in a film. And she just owns it, man.
