Nice explanation. These long videos give a chance to get into so many different aspects of one point... and it helps old guys like me remember detail when I hear it over and over. Thanks for the video!
At my BJJ school,Our head instructor (Charles Dos Anjos) had gotten his BB from Royce Gracie,Charles stresses Standing up in base every time you get up,if he see's you not standing up in base, you do about 70-120 Push Ups.
On the website for the Ultimate Fighter show on Spike there's a clip of BJ Penn instructing the fighters to use this move when the opponent is far enough. If not, he shows, you just roll back into the guard. Pretty interesting.
I think it is also the first thing taught in military combatives.
It is the first thing I teach about being on the ground. And i encourage people to get up this way every time they stand from the ground. So it becomes second nature.
How to stand up? You use your falling momentum to roll backward onto you knees from your kness move back and stand at the sametime (this slides me back into my wing tsun stance)
where is this video from? did the Gracies do an instructional?

Is this really just a BJJ thing? I'm asking because I learned this in karate.

Distance is always a factor in a technique. IF the opponent is too close, you get puched back dpwn. Most likely with a kick or knee to the head.
There are other options if your opponent is too close. Best bet is to kick them then worm away trying to create the distance you need.

You do not always fall like that. And you are sometimes knocked flat.
This technique is more for getting up safely from the ground technique. It is not a breakfall technique.

much respect to the gracie family..but you would have to be quick to your feet or you would get a good kick in the teeth...

Most UFC fighters use this technique to get up. Mostly after distracting with a kick of their own.
Yes, you must be fast. But with a little practice standing up in base is very fast. Timing is everything in a fight though.

then kicked in the ballz.. or have your knees kicked in from that ridiculos stance

How do you recommend getting up, then?

Good clip. I've never had to get up in a situation like that, but I'm going to practice this move just in case :D
