Born in '87 here as well. Hey, is there a live version of the song 'Newest Industry' by them available? I'll even take a decent cover of the song by another band. I can't find one.
A supernatural group, The Husker Boys. So many things seemed to work against them (not least of all themselves). Truly, one of the best acts in musical history, and though this is a cliche, it's true: they are underrated in every way.
Watch Grant Hart kick out the linebacker as Mould springs into the hole. And there is Greg Norton brushing aside the safety as Mould rumbles toward paydirt!
That is correct emannyc. "Husker Du is an embarrassment to superstar acts who come off of their mountaintops with their stone tablets every three years." Probably the best journalist to cover the band was David Fricke of Rolling Stone. If you can find "The Living End" (2LP live-set) his comments are memorable.
this band is fucking great. all the melodic 'punk bands' that followed Nirvana included don't hold a candle. these guys had lyrics which none of the 90's bands had.
..don't hold a candle..ah ah aha..well said! one of the very first Green Day's album, is a nice copy of husker's du, well done but "listen before" for us.
completely agreed. Just saying that's lot of bands covered hd, as music's style. And that "don't hold a candle" makes me laugh. I'm italian and never heard this. I't's a nice "paragon". We got lot of this phrases. Sorry about my horrible english.
You know one of my biggest regrets is never seeing them live although I did see Sugar at a small venue Northampton England, Yer two days later nothing could get rid of the smile on my face and the ringing in my ears. Now my next biggest regret is getting old and hearing Husker makes me wanner get crazy drunk stoned hi scream shout cry bleed and tear down the F**K**G walls. Any one else feel like that hu?
hell, yeah...but i was lucky enough to see husker at pink pop '87 and every sugar tour in the states and toronto in '94...and many solo bob's...blessed, indeed...
Don't you think Grant Hart's harmonizing on Important Years kind of sucks? It really sucks on The Living End. He really hated Bob Mould at this point; I wonder if he was trying to ruin Bob's songs. BTW, I like Grant Hart's songs better.
It's difficult to get an idea from this tape if the sound wsa actually unbalanced, but Hart was having heroin problems which may have been a big issue if he was a little fucked up. It helped to break HD. Which was a shame.
His guitar's volume is fine --- blame the engineer who did this video. It's easy to tell that his guitar really didn't sound that subdued (anywhere *near* that subdued, actually) at this gig. It's just a really bad mix.
For reference, check out the video of "Eight Miles High". While not a perfect mix, the guitar is *much* more audible.
Saw Bob In Edinburgh a few months back and it was the best gig i ever saw him play. C'mon guys, if J Mascis and Lou Barlow can make up and get back together I'm sure you can!!
you really see in that interview that they don't have much to say..you see how fucked up they were in that year, sadly they broke up..hell, what an fucking awesome band...miss them so much.
I saw Husker Du at the Cannery in Nashville probably a month or two before this. I was pretty disappointed actually -- I was a big Zen Arcade fan and all they played was stuff off of Warehouse, which I always felt a) was not that great an album to begin with, and b) was badly recorded.
VERY badly recorded... whilst I love all the Husker albums it seems like they were cursed in the studio, production wise. Warehouse just sounds so thin and sterile, it's got NO balls whatsoever. Still love it though!
Mr. Norton, Saw photos from 8/5/06 @ First Avenue. Good to see you with your bass again. Hell, I still listen to my Grey Area tape (Little Sweden USA)!!!
yea thats right you also did vocals on those songs. i have'nt heard "Don't have a Life" yet but i have heard the rest cause i got everything falls apart and more and the living end. i remember that the living end was the first husker du cd i ever got. then shortly after that i read the book "Our Band Could Be Your Life" then i became a real big fan.
I was too tired to write this the first time I saw it:
But when I think about Husker Du, the thing that comes to mind is how relatable they seemed to be. Definitely guys you could sit and have a cup of coffee with.
Wow, I never heard Norton sing. Yeah, I was born in 1987 too. It sucks, all my favorite bands were broken up by the time I either heard of them or was old enough to go to their shows. Husker Du, Sugar, Jawbox, Burning Airlines...at least Mould still does great solo stuff and J. Robbins (from Government Issue, Jawbox, and Burning Airlines) is in Channels now.
I belive that "Everytime" didn't make the cut because of the choppy lyrics in the verses. Which is one of the best things about the tune in my opinion. In retrospect I think that it should have been on the album.
Finally a Husker Du video with Greg Norton playing "Everytime" live in concert. Just a real kick ass video. It just sucks that this song was just released as a single and not part of the album. But awsome video i thank you for finding this video!!!!!
yeah chokito, thanks alot man. for a fan like me its so hard to really get stuff on Husker Du anywhere. some persepective: i was born in 1987, next time mould or grant are playing in my area im definitely checking them out.

Brilliant vocal phrasing from Bob, terrific harmonizing from Grant, great bass lines, and memorable riff's from the guitar.

I agree - you can taste the animosity. But I think Bob as a MUCH better song writer, musician, and singer.
