Mr. Barrymore was a talented artist as well as a great actor, as was his brother, Lionel, who also composed beautiful music. Of course, their sister, Ethel, was a phenomenon of theater and film. Their father and mother, Maurice (Blythe) Barrymore and Georgiana Drew Barrymore, were famous and gifted actors of their day. The Drews were an acting powerhouse, what a family!
Did you know Barrymore was only 5 foot 8 and his birth name was Blythe? The love of his life was his wife Delores Costello and they had two children. He was doomed from birth due to the alcoholism of his father. Even so, I love and adore him and I wish I could have met him in an earlier life.
5 foot 7 inches actually and Dolores wasn't the love of his life. It may have seemed like that in the beginning when he was courting her and in the early part of their marriage but, alas......it wasn't too last.
@clementinemonkey I love your name, John would have gotten a kick out of it too. I am still looking for a Barrymore lover with the screen name "Mahoney" somewhere in it...only Jack B would have had a pet vulture!
@VictoriaRu29 Yes, I feel quite attached to that dear little cheeky monkey. Jack loved her so but unfortunately she got jealous of Dolores and Jack had to give her up to the San Diego Zoo. The vulture was named Mr. Maloney by Jack and filled the empty space in Jack's heart with Clementine gone.
Grand hotel is his best talkie (and one of the most fabulous classics ever), the same for Dinner at eight. I like very much Rasputin and the Empress too. In all three his brother, the great Lionel Barrymore gave outstanding performances. And try Svengali as well, you won't be disappointed :-)
His performance as "Oscar Jaffe" in "Twentieth Century" may be the greatest performance ever by an actor. There is nothing like it in the history of film. There is no doubt in my mind he was the greatest actor who ever stepped on a stage, who ever stepped in front of a camera.

He was a man given so much and couldn't accept it.

I had read somewhere that Mary Astor was the love of his life.
