Wow, a film with sound AND color in 1929…. How come it only took a few years to fully convert to sound but over FOUR DECADES to color? And how much longer to 3D, while we're at it?
It was decided that this scene would be filmed in color (a lot of the rest of the film was in black-and-white), because it featured current fashions for the appeal of the women in the audience at the time. Of course, it was intended as a comic turn, since the appearance of the models' sequence was out of order... Though it may seem lame by today's standards, it probably made the audiences laugh back then... So... do try to keep that in mind when viewing it.
Wonderful sequence! There's an interesting backstory to this movie, 'It's A Great Life'. The year before the Oscar-winning musical Broadway Melody of 1929 had been released. It was about the meteoric rise to fame of a sister-act, played by Bessie Love and Anita O'Day, and it was very obviously based on the Duncan Sisters, who were massive stars in the 1920s. The Duncan Sisters decided to make a musical themselves. Unfortunately It's A Great Day wasn't a success at the box-office.
I have seen fashion images from 1930 and is incredible the huge transformation in clothing in just 1 year, in 1929 knee length skirts and the dropped waist were still being very fashionable. What would have done a woman who bought new clothes in october 1929 and became poor after the wall street crash??? none women wore short skirts in 1930s?? after wall street crash short skirts came back until 1938
If you listen to the lyrics.... when they com out in lingerie, he sings they are "dressed for dinner"......and this continues on for several more. The bottom line is in the plot of the movie, when the Lawrence Gray character positioned the models to go out on stage, he put them in the wrong order.
I have a feeling that this is a segment from ON WITH THE SHOW, which was the first ALL COLOUR, ALL SOUND motion picture. If it is, then what an incredible find!
A common misconception ..... Experimental Films in color were made as early as 1905..... but in 1922 the first full length Technicolor picture was produced. In 1929 substantial improvements were made in the process and an explosion in color film occurred. Unfortunately, very few of these survive today.

Sorry, typo in the first sentence of my previous post. The title should read 'It's A Great Life', not 'Day'.

Rewatching this film after nearly a year I can't help but be ocularly delighted at how pretty most of the women were. And feminine!

Oh, I see. Thanks a lot for that - I always thought that "Gone With The Wind" was about the earliest colour film around.
