It derives from two words: "woj" (the stem of "wojownik", warrior, and "wojna", war); and "ciech", enjoyment. Thus the name has two meanings: "he who enjoys war" or "smiling warrior".

A bear born and found in iran is a "syrian" bear?! iran is full of bears, particularly in the Kurdish mountains between Hamadan and Kirmanshah where these Polish soldiers found him as they were marching west to Syria and the Mediterranean sea to sail to Italy.

@gratefultiger Wojtek still lives in a symbol for 22nd company of artillerty supply in Polish Army. I just wonder why they still didn't do an epic movie about this?! This is like a golden story for Hollywood - it has everything: war, friendship, love, epicness, sets in Middle East, tragedies. This is like the most perfect scenario ever. And LIFE WROTE IT. Hollywood - PICK THIS UP!!
