  • The point was not to make girls attractive at a young age. The point was to increase confidence, live healthy and active, and create a woman who will become whatever she sets her mind to, and not let stupid stereotypes influence her path to her goals. Ultimate attractiveness is often a result of such a confident woman.

  • Had the ribbon set cant remember what my sister had now

  • I had this when I was a little girl. I put on my sweatbands and did the little workout and was so proud of myself. I'm now 30 and I still remember the songs - that's how much I loved it.

I want them to bring back Mousercize to the Disney morning.

  • I had that when I was a kid and I turned out okay... well... nevermind.

  • Umm they are calling us girls fat

  • I had the set with the pink legwarmers - I really wanted the ribbon though!

  • I think is a nice idea... they don't say "Get skinny, girl" they say "get in SHAPE!"...

  • Shit, what ever happened to these kinda shows. We need excercise programming on tv these days.. seriously folks. What's anorexic about it? Maybe you should be worried about the fact that obesity has started to become socially-acceptable

  • I totally had this!! lol

  • omg, I used to have this! I still remember the weighted bracelets. Didn't they weigh about 1/3 to 1/2 a lb, each or something like that?

  • I have the weight set I got as a hand me down from one of my cousins.

  • In the 80's fitness was viewed as something fun to do. Being healthy and fit are not a bad thing. Let's be real, kids/teens today are fat and flabby instead of fit. That is NOT the natural state of a human being at a young age. They eat terrible food and they do not exercise at all. So, you tell me if the 80's which encouraged young people to develop a sense of FITNESS early and to carry it onto adulthood was worse than this decade which encourages a sense of FATNESS and non-movement.

  • Hmm, so baby toys can double as colorful bracelets?? *GASPS* I never thought of it like that! :O Gay.

  • how do plastic bracelets help you get in shape?

  • @koolkat18181 They were weighted bracelets for resistance exercises.

  • You can tell the first girl is proud of her body, girls shouldn't be ashamed of their bodys

  • Lolololol weighted bracelets? Woooww

  • Oh, the 80's. Ideas were simple and meant to be fun, even fitness. Call up your best girlfriends, grab some tights and a ribbon twirler and you're set for a fabulous afternoon. Don't forget the Casio tape player! : )

  • I had Get In Shape Girl back when I was living in Philly. I remember it very vividly. Awesome memories.

  • Lmao! the kids today would eat these kids, nothin but fat americans...im so ashamed...thank god i make my kids workout, and fro 40 im the man..check my page...youll see....

  • @darness1234 Precisely ! Well said !

  • This was to counter the fact that the USA stunk at rhythmic gymnastics at the Olympics and desperately wanted to find somebody who could medal in the sport.

  • I remember I saw this plus sized lady on televison say her parents bought her "Get in shape girl" for christmas

  • I haven't thought about get in shape girl in at least 20 years. I probably still have the tape, I know I still have the ribbon. I liked the music.

  • I got the rhythmic ribbon as a kid. As usual, it wasn't as fun as the commercial made it look.

I don't see what's wrong with encouraging kids to exercise. Since this commercial first aired, more and more kids are overweight (even clinically obese). Don't kid yourself, if a kid is fat, it's probably not "baby fat."

  • @lorrierack

OMG!! YOUR SO LUCKY!! I wish I was born in the 80s! I was born Jan 1999! (I'm using my bff's account)!! I saw this on eBay for 10.00, free shipping! But my dad kept saying no!! UGH!! Now I'm on every dad to look for this!!! Please flag me when u decide to sell your set! I dont care if 1 thing is missing! Please! Thanks!

  • what's speacial there?

  • what do the bangles do

  • I totally had this when I was little! Good times :)

  • M2J, I'll be honest with you. I'm not sure which is more disturbing, your "brilliant" (more like preachy and counterproductive) message or the fact that a grown man such as yourself cares about what little girls are doing with their energy.

  • I really don't think this is as much about looking good as it is about being an active child. Too many kids nowadays are overweight or obese because they aren't active. I wouldn't necessarily pass this off as something to make girls feel insecure.

  • I had this. I loved the commercial. I wanted to just have the clothes really. It was fun back thern.

  • I find it funny that most people here see this advert as promoting people to get thin, instead of what it could have been: promoting girls to do some exercise with some pretty pink ribbons and some girly looking wrist weights

  • @ladyrubisco In a lot of shows back in the 80's everyone talked about fitness and fun- not working out so much to get down to a size 0 as in these days.

If we go back to such ideas of fitness for the fun of it, and how it makes you feel good, and I think there wouldn't be any anorexia or obesity problems anywhere in the world.

  • In the 80's we didn't have half of our American women waddling around like sea cows either.

The girls who overdo it and starve themselves are on the other side of the extreme - a balance should be made.

It's the people who excuse fatness & obesity who contribute to the problem. Nobody is supposed to say anything to the 300 pound girl because "her feelings might get hurt".

Meanwhile, she's steadily killing herself from the inside out.

  • @psychomajic666 Yes, but kids need to think of getting fit and growing properly ( not under or over eating, and getting away from the video games) more than anything. It matters the person's age of what kind health information should be given. Its the same with other health issues like sex (would you teach six year olds to use condoms?)

Also being very overweight can be quite bad for health as I know someone who is and she always has joint problems.

  • i dont believe in "getting in shape" i think everyone shoud find a sport they like and stick to it (and this doesnt include chess)

  • also From The Makers of

    Get Yourself Anoriexa Nervosa Girl

  • I had a ribbon like that. I twirled it around my leg while hopping. Like a jump rope. Ribbon.

I was happy to see this summer that a bunch of kids were biking, our neighbors' kid was biking with his friend, and one day a bunch of boys went to the pond @ the golf course i live on & got exercise looking for snakes xD

  • I got sets of these for birthdays AND xmas....Apparently my partents AND Santa thought I was fat.

  • Girls THEIR age don't need to worry about their figure or shape unless it's outta control...

    YOUNG GIRLS:

It's not your time to worry about your shape or size,

  • not sure about that, it's that age when children pick up their habits for when they're older. The younger you can encourage kids to excersise and eat well, the less chance of them getting out of shape when they're older.

  • During the time of this commercial I was in grade school.

Kids just weren't as heavy - for whatever reasons.

We had the same access to fast foods & snacks as kids do now.

It might be lack of self-control, bad parenting - who knows.

  • Tv and video games and less sports. tecdhnology is killing us.

  • The tragedy is, 22 year old girls still want to wear the same clothes they were able to squeeze into at age 15.

It doesn't look sexy or even acceptable.

They look like playdough in the palm of someones hand after they squeezed it & let it ooze out from between thier fingers.

    Bellys, rolls & "gunts" galore!

    If you're a size 16 - please stop dressing like a size 4!

  • in the uk we call thm "waist muffins" cause the fat sticks out like a doughnut aorund the girls waist. Not attractive at all.

  • I'll have to remember that one (waist muffin).

One of the many disgusting features like the infamous "gunt".

  • Comment removed

  • If you don't like hip-huggers or revealing clothing, don't wear any.

But there's really no reason to talk down on those beautiful women, confident in their sexuality who do enjoy dressing sexy.

  • @psychomajic666 Hip huggers just look ridiculous on any woman IMO.

  • Oh my god! I had this! I totalliy forgot it existed. I had two of the big sets.

That was back when the biggest concern about 10 year old girls was not that they were obese, but that they were dieting (I wonder why?). My things have changed.

  • WTF !!!!!!!!!

  • A study that was done said over 60% of all children is at least 5-10 pounds or more over weight. We need to get our kids to play an hour a day. The rate of childhood diabetes is the highest it's ever been due to poor diet, and lack of exercise

  • From the same makers of

    Get Yourself Pregnant Girl!

Get Yourself an Eating Disorder Girl!

  • @boskolost I am sorry but most kids now a days do

  • @boskolost That adapts more to this decade my friend! Eating disorders and teen pregnancy are way higher in this decade than they have ever been! The fact is, kids in the 80's were kids, but today that innocence is gone.

  • @boskolost back then working out was about growing strong for kids most of the time. It wasn't like now with all the talk about obesity, weight loss, and looking "Sexy" before you're eighteen.

  • my cousin had the rhythm and ribbons one and i remember i liked playing with it when we went over there

  • wow that was 2 funny !

  • I loved my rhythm and ribbons. I would jump off of the picnic table with it and sing "Get in Shape, Girl!"

  • I didn't have this, I had the L.A. Gear knockoff ankle weights. I do remember this commercial and wanting the Rhythm and Ribbons. I never did get it. Oh, well.

  • girls were encouraged to be "with it" and "cool." being cool also means being sexy.

  • More like "Get anorexia, Girl!"

  • @Lauren028 So, encouraging exercise is nowadays viewed as the equivalent of becoming anorexic? I think not. Moving one's body -- as in bodies in motion -- should be encouraged from a young age. Sadly, this decade stands for just the opposite and kids' bodies are showing this trend as they get larger and larger and unhealthy due to their sedentary environs.

  • I got the ribbon kit back then, although like most kids I quickly lost interest in it. People were already worried in the 80s about how sedentary kids were becoming. Video games and cable changed how kids played and it has only got worse since then.

  • i still sing this catchy little jingle today!

  • Thank you for posting this commercial. It brought back memories from my childhood.

  • I think American children can sure use this kit especially for the obese children

  • the truth is kids used to not be fat in America in the 70's and 80's because it wasn't deemed "unsafe" to run around outside and play... now adays kids are latch-keys and drink too much soda and watch too much TV and video games etc. growing up my parents only let us have soda and sweets on special occasions (like a movie night, once every 6 months or so and holidays..it was a TREAT!) and all our food was homemade (unprocessed) and not from a fast food place or box. GO OUTSIDE AND PLAY KIDS!!!!!

  • I totally agree, i was a VIP at the emergency room and nobody juged my mother or anything, it was just a childhood accident, because of playing too rough or something. Or attempting to do something in the eyes of a child, really cool.

  • hahaha those wrist band things look like the sort of thing you would find in a box 20 years later and say 'what the hell is this thing?'

  • I think we have reverted back to the 80's in a lot of ways now. But I think if this commercial came out now, I feel some peeople would have a problem with it. Though I do remember the "exercise craze" of the 80's.

  • I'm not sure this actually demonstrates playing on girls' insecurities as much as it demonstrates that people in the eighties had a nearly universal obsession with exercise. I personally think it's a healthier trend than coronary artery disease or type II diabetes, and I wish it would make a bit of a comeback.

  • Back then people weren't that insecure about their body, because they took better care of themselves. But it is not a bad idea to start stimulating children to exercise again.

  • Revival the fashion of the leotards of the

    80s years for ever ...please

  • OMG i totally had that!!! i think i had the ribbion thingy and the wrist and head band

  • oh my god.. i had the get in shape pink workout mat , the tape , the damn ribbons and bangles , even the mini weights lol

  • those r awesome!

  • I had one of these back in the day that came with an exercise chart for the wall. My friends and I ended up using the mat to slide down the stairs in my house LOL.

  • awsome!

  • I had this when I was a kid. I don't see how I could of wanted this now. lol

  • yeah! no fat chicks!

  • Once Christmas my sister got the bracelets and I got the ribbon. 20 years later, she knows how to accessorize and I teach colorguard.

  • "GET IN SHAPE GIRl!" aha... playing on young girls insecurities! this is sure to make a comeback!

  • Shit, with all the fat kids today we need something like this on the market. Although back then it was all about the cute leotards and bracelets.

  • Can you still buy this anywhere lol

  • i had this back in the day u couldnt tell me nuffin...lol....

  • i had the tapes, the sneaker pom poms, and the batons. in the end, i found sitting on my ass and playing nintendo to be more gratifying.

  • I had one of these!!! ahhh... memories. I actually wish I still had it. It had some good exercises I could still do today.

  • I had the Rythmic Ribbon set in blue. I tried use it as a fishing rod. Pissed my mother off so bad!

  • I had the ones with the free weights that you fill with water, and I remember one of them having bite marks all over it. Maybe it was fun to chew on??

  • I had the Baton one and I still have it along with the tape and bandana, lol

  • I wish I would have used mine more and lived up to the GET IN SHAPE GIRL standards!!

  • AHHH i had those!!

    i miss them so much!!

  • I had this!!!

  • Yeah, this is ultra bananas. This led my younger sister to establish an alter ego of a singing starlet/fitness guru named LISA HARMON! No copyright.

  • This is bananas! I had this workout kit when I was like 7. I remember having my little pink stereo and my leg warmers and exercising trying to look like my mom. This brings back memories:}

  • My stupid boyfriend sings this song to me every morning when I et up for my f#ing aerobics college class. yaa

  • YES YES YES!!! I actually just watched a home video of myself sweating feverishly to Get in Shape Girl in my back yard with my pink ribbon and my cassette instructor! RAD!

  • I didn't know they had books! I had a ballet bar that suction cupped on to my parents mirrored closet door. It came with a tutu!

  • I loved this stuff! I was so into Get In Shape Girl and Mousercising! So much fun!

  • mousercising? i love that show!

I never thougt they had this video commercial. That was a long time ago. Like 84-85. Man! and to think i wanted to have those girls as a girlfriend back when i was 8-9 years old.

  • I remember that show....I remember watching it whenever the disney channel had a free week before it came with basic cable :)

  • yeah and it came sooo early in the morning (5:00 am central)^_^'

  • I agree. At least it was encouraging kids to exercise and get motivated. Now our kids are over-weight, unhealthy, and not many are motivated. They're too busy eating in front of the pc and drinking diet coke. Bring back the 80s and the fun stuff.

  • Sure kids today are out of weight and unhealthy, sitting immobile on the couch playing video games. But at least they feel REALLY good about themselves! XD

  • LOL! I had almost everyone of the sets when I was young. I use to twirl my pink ribbon all over the house and drove my parents crazy.

  • omigod i really wanted this stuff when i was little!it was sooooooo cool

  • Wow, I remember this! My neighbor had the ribbon and the cassettes, and we used to "work out" in her carport. Good times.

  • at least they were encouraging excercise

  • Gayest toy series ever! My sister had the ribbon ball and tapes.

  • omg i had the books
