Have mercy on me, my soul. (...) You are rich in wisdom, But this body is poor in understanding. You do not compromise, And he does not obey. This, my soul, is extreme suffering. In the silence of the night you visit The Beloved And enjoy the sweetness of His presence. This body ever remains, The bitter victim of hope and separation. This, my Soul, is agonizing torture. Have mercy on me my Soul. Khalil Gibran
This version is absolutely haunting. It always conjures up so many emotions in me. The cello part is breathtaking. The fact that it was recorded on September 11th only adds to its depth and haunting nature.
His introduction was such because they had just learned of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center ... you can feel the sorrow permeating the musicians, and hence, the music ... so much emotion there.
It is, in fact, a masterful combination and a great re-working of both ...For me, though it's close, the crowning jewel is "A Perfect Love Gone Wrong" ...It is a a wonderful departure from the original that is much more enduringly memorable.
Look, I don't give a shit WHAT you believe. I was simply providing info on the mood of the concert due to the events on 9/11. This isn't the forum to argue your beliefs about September 11th. Take your theories somewhere else.
at the beginning he says this is for those who lost their lives and then he sings fragile. it was sad and somber for a lot of the show and picked up later on..... i think we shuld enjoy this beautifil music and not start fights over real terrorists and 9/11 conspiracy topics.
I think the concert was done a day after the 9-11, or even a few days later, since in the making of video they talk about what they will do. Sting though that they should not let the terrorists stop them, since this was exactly what the terrorists wanted. Anyways, very emotional, wonderful concert, this song in particular.
Guys: we have hier a ordinary Bass (Christian McBride), the 'counterbass' and a violoncello (Jacques Morelenbaum), that is the ordinary 'bass' in the classical mode. But the functions of both instruments is most different in this case (and so in the other case too...). The Counterbass is most deep-sharp than the cello. The cello plays by bow and the bass with fingers. So, we have not two basses, but a cello and a bass.
I have the DVD of this show. It's entitled, "...all this time". It contains behind-the-scenes footage, including a round table discussion with all band members as to whether or not they should perform 9/11 after hearing the news of the terrorist attacks. They did the show. Sting opened with "Fragile". This is a great DVD.

Schoolboy's Stand
A schoolboy, a schoolboy stand,
With a ready answer, ready in his hand.
To know the answer, and not understand,
Tis the fate of a schoolboy in a schoolboy land.
When the schoolboy grows, and grows grand,
Will he know the lesson and take his stand,
Or forever, forever, remain in the schoolboy land?
(continued below)
MrTubacle 1 year ago
Gone are the towers that once did stand.
Now there is only dirt and nothing too grand.
The people feel hollow like much of the land.
Because the schoolboy stood, but he did not understand.
He stood mute like a tree in the sand,
And fell thunderous and very grand.
Such is a schoolboy in a schoolboy land.

I didn't know the second part "perfect love gone wrong", but it's beautiful also. Great group of musicians!

One of the hippest settings (as in 'place' as opposed to 'time') for a gig ever!

why is there another bass player
Lenerd50 4 years ago
ok, the big one is a Double-Bass, most deep.. the second is an "normal sound bass"... Style standard.
wellsfordcircle 4 years ago
ya obviously.... the other is chris mcbride one of the best bassists around right now... i just dont see a need
Lenerd50 4 years ago
Good sting is a very particular musician, both bass, is a part of a style that seems to me to be interesting ... two bassist, go .. only sting!
