i removed an answer to my post here because of misinformation and i don't want to spread it here so there is a corrected answer:

depending on race and place, hamsters could be kept together in one cage. the russian dwarf, however, can't be kept with more than himself.

so called roborowski and campbell dwarfs are more likely to live together but only in small familiy groups.

they have to be kept in a huge cage (at least 140cmx60cm and with several floors) so they can find themselves a quiet place and a hiding place when they need refuge from battle of primacy. keeping hamsters of the same sex together is not possible - as of two different sexes is neither: keeping the family together will necessarily lead to uncontrollable reproduction and so to genetic diseases.

no, they don't have red eyes because they aren't albinos. there is a soft grey line on their back that shows that they aren't.

Can you please tell me how you got a russian winter white? cause at my pet store they say they only have winter whites and theyd never heard of a russian winter white =( this was at a petsmart

"russian" means only a specification of "dwarf". there are several dwarf hamster races, like the roborowski or the campbell dwarf hamster. the russian one is another one.

unfortunately i don't know much about these pet shops because i am from germany.

i really recommend to ask yourself - or rather your little brother should ask himself - whether a hamster is the right pet for you. they are active at nights and sleep during the day. waking them up makes them aggressive and they bite you.

if you decide to get a little hamster, make sure he has a big cage and not a little plastic one.

for the hamster, look first in an animal shelter or have a look at the private ads in your local newspaper. only if you can't find one there go to a pet shop.

get a dog instead; i got my sheltie from a breeder for only $500 and he is a lot of fun. my hamster died about 2 years ago and she was a pain in the ass; her cage smelled like piss and i had to clean it twice a week and she pooed everywhere when i let her out. my dog is well trained and fun to play with and he doesn't bite. get a dog if you want a great pet cuz a hamster will only be a burden.
