i find it really weird that winchell didn't know marshall. marshall was the pinnacle of dummy makers throughout his lifetime including big names like charlie mccarthy. however, you can't help but see that winch shows his intellect by asking questions that are general and yet tries to narrow it down- not easy.
Paul Winchell was so cool, so collected in this segment. He surprised everyone by bringing out Jerry Mahoney. Who'd'a thunk that this man would later become famous as the voices of Dick Dastardly, Gargamel & Tigger!
The story goes Frank Marshall was hired by Paul Winchell to make him a figure. Winchell did not care for the figure Marshall made so he took a standard Marshall catalog figure instead called a “Noseyboy” and modified the nose. Marshall did NOT carve Knucklehead Smiff, Knucklehead was a fiberglass head created by Winshell from a mold of Jerry’s head.
It's too bad that there are no kinnie films of Paul and Ed Bergen appearing on another popular tv game show of the 1950's"Masquerade Party" as"Dr.Jekyll & Mr.Hyde".
A great old telly show; a classic. I loved this show as a kid, but it was on too late for me to see it usually. But I sure did watch the Winchell & Mahoney hour... "Hurray! Hurrah! It's Winchell & Mahoney time..."
The Wikipedia entry for Paul Winchell does list the guest as the maker of Jerry Mahoney. (From Wikipedia: Winchell's best-known ventriloquist dummies were Jerry Mahoney and Knucklehead Smiff. Both were carved by Chicago-based figure maker Frank Marshall, though later in his career Winchell made his own puppets in fiberglass.)
I like Winchell -- bright, funny, handsome, talented. I wish WML would have used him more often {solo?} I remember WML from the 1960s when it became rather posh, so including a ventriloquist dummy interviewing and asking questions as part of the panel seems . . . I don't know . . . a little gimmicky.
Paul Winchell was the real inventor of the artifical heart . He was a medical doctor as well as an actor and ventrioquist.

Daly was quite the wordsmith, always twisting and playing with phrases to keep the panel off-balance.

This is a great segment, but it's never made clear whether or not the gentleman actually made Jerry Mahoney.

Farfel was Danny O'Day's dog, not Winchell's. Both were great ventriloquists.

Paul Winchell's "dummies" were Jerry Mahoney, Knucklehead Smith and Farfel...remember this one?
N-E-S-T-L-E-S...Nestle's makes the very best chocolate...Winchell and Farfel did that bit.

And the time Lucy forgot to bring Mr Winchells puppets to the Charity Performance and she had to sub as his "dummy"

Who's the guest panelist? Vivian Blaine or Paul Winchell?
emster93 3 years ago
Notice how John Daly bent the rules to keep Paul Winchell asking questions.

I only knew Winchell as being the voice of Tigger in Winnie the pooh before I started watching WML. Talented Guy!

Years later he did significant work on the artificial heart. No kidding.
