As far as I know the Taiping Rebellion cost about as many lives as WW1 (just over a longer period)It is incredible that China's massive upheavils costing millions are still largely unknown in the west (even the Cultural Revolution)At least these tragedies are acknowledged in China.
Yeah the Taiping Rebellion depending on the numbers you attribute to it caused more deaths than even the Great Leap Forward which is ridiculous. Thats about 50 million people.
And yeah you're right not enough people know about them, however you would be surprised because those that do usually do a good job of conveying the information to others.

Did you visit Wuhan, Guangzhou or Chongqing? I would love to see China- and contrast its many cities with each other.

No, when I go back in Summer of 2009 I'm definitely going to see both though. Also I'm going to Hong Kong and probably Chengdu during that trip too.
