  • I'm doing this for my choir solo ensamble :D

  • There have always been two lyrics, that songwriters have avoided. The other one is "...but I've never been to me."

  • Merry Christmas, Maureen! Your voice is truly one of a kind, i love it!

  • It's so cool when someone can REALLY sing! And they don't need a lot of electronic "make up". Just the pure song. When she sings here, it's like a good actor: you don't see HIM but the part he's playing, Thank you, Merry Christmas!

  • @MiristWurst Thank you so much and Happy Christmas to you too.. Maureen.

  • This is the version I was looking for, and was just hoping it existed somewhere. You have a lovely voice and a way of making all the delicate notes you sing sound simple, and a capella, just perfect for this song. I will look for your Christmas CD!

  • @piscessunlibramoon Thank you...such lovely comments.

  • Absolutely beautiful...I looked at a few. Pure, simple, wondrous graphics/art. Thank you.

  • @bleger814Thank you for your lovely comments.

  • ...

  • I wonder how many people watched this video after reading Jacob have I loved...

  • I hope that was a good chill......thank you for commenting.

  • @maureenderry it was! Oh my goodness, your voice is hauntingly beautiful :)

  • i had a chill run down my spine...

  • una canzone cantata così riaccende anche il cuore più duro... grazie Hegarty!

  • fint fint fint!!!

  • Beautfully done, excellent rendition!

  • @sigmundmelberg Thank you.

  • a good example for the also on youtube Rankin Sisters, who made the worst version ever of this delicate song in a pop up tempo version, whatever next.....

Thanks for this nice an traditionally sang old song, thats the way it should be done

  • @jcriedijk Thank you. I like this Carol very much myself.

  • this brings me to tears every time i hear

  • Lovely

  • Beautifully sung.

  • What beautiful vibrato! Are you trained as bel canto...? Just stumble across the video...heard this tune on a CD...such a touching haunting melody. Thank you for posting

  • @Rubiastra Thank you for commenting........yes I was trained bel canto. My singing teacher was a man called Neil Carlin..............a fine bass baritone.

  • This is an ethereal performance! If the sky could sing (and perhaps it can, somehow) then this is how it would sound. Your voice floats across my room as I sit here alone, enthralled by the sheer, a cappella beauty of every note. Brava!

  • @silharima Thank you for such a lovely comment. Your words make me Thank God for the voice he gave me.

  • I have a solo for this song for my choir concert. I can't wait!

  • @Insaneiron801 ahhh mee too!! xD

  • beautiful

  • @littlemissbroadway14 Thank you

  • Just the instrumental version of this is REALLY CREEPY.....I'm in A Christmas Carole and play Christmas Past :D and we use this song for a big transition scene from the present to past....and its really creepy....

  • i've got this song for a chior solo...im so thrilled, i love this song; it's beautiful

  • a real impressive performance can someone please tell me the meaning of the song ^^

  • galee dhis is beautiful

  • @HisPrettyYellowBone Thank you.

  • One of the songs less played, maybe, but one of the most beautiful. I could do with a lot LESS of Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire, Walking In A Winter Wonderland, The 12 Days of Christmas, Up On The Rooftop, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, & more of this one, Pat-A-Pan, O Little Town Of Bethlehem, Bring A Torch Jeanette, Isabella, I Saw Three Ship Come Sailing In, Carol of the Bells, Good King Wenceslas, etc. Not to complain, really -- I just love the older ones.

  • @Ivyandstone Thanks for your comment. ..........I love Christmas Carols and love singing them. Look forward to Christmas ..

  • @Ivyandstone: Many of those songs might be older then this one. I did a little research on it. I don't think any record of it existing can be found from before the 1920. Not that it might have existed as folk tune for many years before that. Not likely though, it would have noticed. Seems to be as ancient as the Church though.

  • Bravo and Bravo again!! This is good for joy. Thanks

  • @eldon1946 Thank you

  • @eldon1946 Thank you...........I appreciate your comment..

  • i sang this song for Christmas, <3 in spanish. It is beautiful.

  • Wow. What a beautiful voice! How clearly the notes ring out! I hadn't heard this song in years and this rendition brought back all of the magic. Thank you for sharing!

  • Thank you for your lovely comment. and sorry I am so late replying

  • You are sweet to reply at all! Blessings...keep singing...in your heart and otherwise...right?

Yes, I'm sure I was in Derry as well, and I remember county Down and Kerick Furgass and a trip to the Aaron Islands.

Forgive any mispellings. But singing that song in a little pub there somewhere...is a sweet memory.:)

  • Thanks again.......Carrickfergus!

  • Dear Maureen...what a beautiful voice. Thank you for being so generous to us all by sharing it!

I'm an American who studied voice when younger(!)

...and viisted Ireland then as a student...and offered a song in a pub with the locals (in Strabane I think!) I sang Amazing Grace to the tune Londonderry Aire. :) A sweet memory for me. Merry Christmas!

  • Thank you for your lovely comment. Strabane is only 14 miles from Derry..my home town.

  • Beautiful song. Beautiful singing. I heard the story of the song and the song itself on Rining Time on RTE radio this week

  • Comment removed

  • Beautiful. Simply beautiful. There's nothing else to say.

  • Thank you for your lovely comment

  • Thank you for your lovely comment and sorry for being so late replying.

  • so beatiful

  • Thank you

  • good lord that's a beautiful version of this song!

the story of the song itself is incredible..look it up on wikipedia (and a piece they don't cover is that he looked for the little girl again and again until the day he died)

  • the 'look it up on Wikipedia" comment is to the other lucky people that hear your beautiful rendition NOT necessarily to you, Maureen, who sound like you already know EVERYthing..what a gift.

I'm singing this song at my family church just before Christmas to celibrate the life of a close family friend, a woman who died this year. She waked everywhere she went, She was born on Christmas Eve and her name was Carol. Your singing truly inspired me. Thank You.

  • Thank you for your lovely comment. Maureen.

  • Beautiful. thank you

  • Thank you.

  • This gave me goose bumps.I have never heard this artist name before, but I am sure I heard this song as a child...thank you for sharing.Beautiful!I love A'Cappella.

  • Thank you...I have been singing for a looooong time. Maureen

  • I love how your voice is clear as a bell. You don't hear that as often as you should these days. I love your rendition of this song. Good job!

  • Thank you for your lovely comment.

  • i can play this song on the flute it was soooo hard 0mg

  • I'm sing this with my small women's chorus group. I'm surprised he gave such an elaborate song to 9th graders, but it's very beautiful, and i'm proud to be doing it. :)

  • I just wanted to say what a beautiful job you have done singing this song especailly acapella. It is not easy to sing without any instruments so, I applaud you. Also, I really enjoy hearing how clear and pure your voice is. Great Job!

  • Such a lovely comment! Thank you.

  • I sometimes cannot read the comments to YouTube videos. Too often, many respondents display total ignorance of the content and/ meaning of the video. As a career educator and "schooled" musician, it pains me to observe posts that reflect posters lack of credible, valid, information. Yes, everyone has the right to free speech. It would just be wonderful, helpful and enjoyable if accurate information went into the mind before the voice was engaged.

  • Thank you for commenting....I am not quite sure to what you are referring!

  • If you want to play this song on your cell phone. Here are the numbers to play it on your keypad. the forward slash denotes mesure lines. 3/ 6366876/ 53123/ 636876/ 87663/ 636876/ 87653/ 63668*6/ 8632.

  • Aw, it doesn't work on my phone :( I guess I'll just have to listen to this some more. No loss.

  • It will only work with a Samsung Phone.

  • Very nice rendition, esp given that singing unaccompanied solo can be difficult. Nice ornamentation added (such as 1:39)!

  • Thank you

  • this song is very beautiful ....im not a christian but i really do like this song....

  • A beautiful song is a beautiful song so matter what religion.

  • yeah thats very true .... that's why i commented about this song ... to say that although i'm not a christian because this is a christian religious song ...i like it very much ....

  • I am glad you like it. I decided to sing it unaccompanied for I thought it it would be nice without piano or any instrument.

  • In my oppinion, i dont like just having you singing it. I think it sounds much better with a chior and a piano. I mean the bass makes this song haha. i sound know i have to sing it for my school chior.

  • Because one person hears something does not make it the only way. Read the composition of the song by John Jacob Niles, you may appreciate it as a beautiful folk song found and composed before electronics or instruments. Jacob Niles and family of authentic mountain musicians and makers of beautiful instruments performed and spoke at Juilliard School of Music in NYC when I was a seventeen year old student. I never forgot them. This song is among the most hauntingly beautiful--if one can hear.

  • I know how to sing this. You sing it very well.

  • she sounds beautiful

  • Thank you.

  • Nice voice but I think it would have sounded nicer with some type music in the background.

  • This song is sung at the Celtic Christmas festival in Atlnata. My family and I love it. Maureen, you do sing it wonderfully. God bless you and your voice this day and all the days of your life.

  • Thank you so very much.

  • Hi! Your voice is heavenly! Truly a gift from our Father. This is one of my favorite Christmas songs and I've never heard it sung so beautifully! Will you record "Brightest and Best" and /or "Mary, Did You Know?" someday? I hope so.... they are my other top favorites. I tried to find the CD you mentioned this song is on. I couldn't track it down anywhere. I'd really like to have it. Can you tell me where I can find it for sale? Thank you for sharing your beautiful gift with all of us! Take care!

  • Thank you for your lovely comment. You could write to me in Messages and I shall give you details of CD. I recorded this with other Christmas Carols and have copies at home.

  • wow her voice is so pure i wish people still wrote songs like this its very beautiful

i would love to hear the original appilation version!

  • It has celtic appalachain roots. Streisand's verson has no meter barely. She abandons it's folk roots.

  • do know the name of the man who transcribed their songs? i can't remember for the life of me and you seem to know about this kind of stuff

  • John Jacob Niles developed the song from something sung by the daughter of an Apalachian revivalist preacher.

  • What Celtic roots? might as well say it has HUNGARIAN roots.

  • she sings thiz sooooooooooo well. idk who even sings this i just listen to this one

  • Maureen Hegarty sings it :)

  • wow this is sung so beautifully.

my voice teacher gave it to me to sing and i can't do it nearly as well as you.

by the way, this is classical singing. the thing is i learn the classical method of singing but i liked to belt. is it possible to be able to do both?

  • It is possible, but it doesn't sound as good. Not to mention, belting is unhealthy for your voice.

  • Just remember to allow your voice to sing do not make it sing. I hope you understand. The voice should never be pushed.

  • Beautiful! This song is so pure and plaintive. When you sing it, it sounds somehow Celtic?

  • Maureen, You have done many beautiful songs, but this is my very favorite. It is just one of those that I love to listen to on a regular basis.

  • I love this Christmas Carol and love to sing it.

  • This is fantastic...

  • Thank you so much...I love singing this Carol. It is so sweet and simple.

  • I have been looking for a recording of this with the right quality of voice--and this most definitely is it. My compliments and best wishes. I also listened with pleasure to more of your selections--pure unaffected beautiful singing. Thank you.

  • Une voix tès douce, un chant qu`on nous offre harmonie. Très belle Chanson du Noël, chantè -a capella- donne une grande paix. Bellissima Maureen Hegarty!!! Mercie beaucoup pour me l`envoyé.

  • My language skills are not very good but I can understand a few words....thank you.

  • Thank you so much for your lovely comment. I have been away for a few days and catching up so looking forward to looking at your very interesting selection of videos very soon.

  • Wonder-ful !

    XxSarah

  • Thanks Sarah.

  • So beautiful.

  • Thank you. I love this Christmas carol.

  • This is just one of those songs I listen to all year long. You sing it so beautifully and the video is just wonderful! Thank you again.

You Tube is amazing, it is connecting me with the world through music!

  • Yes...Youtube.....great isn't it! Some pieces of music I have heard in the past and thought I would never hear them again....then !!!

  • Hi Maureen. Internets working today so I'm getting a chance to hear your stuff. This was a delightful version. What do you think of the one Ken Bank and I did?

  • I'd say you need a good manager.

  • Where are your cd's sold? You are a brilliant singer. How can you not have a recording contract?

  • I recorded a few CDS locally but they are not available overseas. Maybe I need a good manager!! The above song is on a Christmas CD with several other favourite Christmas Carols.

  • This is one of my favourite songs. Beautiful version!

  • The voice and the images are beautiful.

  • Wow! My favorite. I just saw this come by my subscriptions and just had to listen. Wonderful!!! Thank you so much. And you have a real knack for finding good images for your videos ... I struggle with that.

If at all possible, I will be posting George beverly Shea's version of this carol for Christmas. Thanks again, Bill
