Quick point about area 51 and the RVs; While it is true that the policy regarding intruders is to shoot on sight, it really isn't that much of a stretch to assume that in the event of a worldwide crisis involving aliens apparently bent on exterminating humanity that the guards would be considerably more ambivalent about massacring an entire convoy of terrified civilians.

And another thing, why the MAC would ever connect to that alien computer, bla, bla, bla? Well, the most efficient technology is the one that is simple. Remember when playing car games, you just had to keep pressing a button and the car would go, no change of gear, no nothing! That technology exists today on actual cars, when gear switches automatically! What makes you think that a technology from a far point in galaxy is complex? THE ALIENS WOULD NOT HAVE EXPECTED A VIRUS ATTACK !

Oh, i also pondered those things you stressed and found answered that fit the game, you just have to HAVE A LITTLE IMAGINATION AND PAY ATTENTION TO DETAILS. I ALSO LOVE THE INDEPENDENCE DAY FILM! I'm surprised you didn't notice that the ray is harmless and that a blue plasma stuff was the actual cause of the destruction. I COULD PUNCH A HOLE IN EVERY COMMENT YOU MAKE! Second: The destruction of the ship is caused by the destruction of the tower, which can be done by missiles and not by kamikaze runs. That guy had a malfunction on the missile launching mechanism that's why he made the kamikase run. A simple missile would destroy the tower that hold that plasma stuff that came down the harmless blue ray. The plasma tower destroyed would start a chain reaction of the plasma stuff that came down the blue ray.

For confusedmatthew (who else). I just watched the review of Independence day. Two things i want to stress. First: when the drunk guy kills himself to take down the big ship atop area 51, the ray didn't kill him because if you watch the film again, the ray is not the one that causes the destruction, is the blue stuff that comes down on the ray (watch closely when the empire state building and other buildings are destroyed). The ray is harmless!

Any praise for this movie is sub-moronic. Its a scene for scene remake of War of the worlds, only WotW avoided corny cliches and subpar editing. I make fun of this movies cheese in one of my educational films. The aliens were idiots on any number of levels.

Once the "blowing/destroying up famous monuments on Earth and on the Moon" part of the movie was over, the film was awesome. I know that some people practically masturbate to images of famous, priceless, irreplacable monuments being destroyed, but it's never really been my thing. Not all fetishes are for everybody, I suppose.

One problem I have with this movie is the part where Will's Smith friend (forgot his name in the movie) commit suicide to destroy the other alien spaceship that was following them. Can anyone tell me what happened in that part? No matter how many times i watch that movie, i can't make any sense out of that part. Did they both died in the explosion? Isn't the alien spaceship supposed to have a barrier so it could been protected from that?

One problem with your review: If you decimate a population, technically you remove one tenth. It was a punishment in the Roman army for deserters - 1 in 10 would be randomly chosen and the other 9 had to beat them to death or be killed themselves. I know I know too much, I study Latin at A-level. :P

I saw this the day after it premiered. Holy shit, that had to be the largest crowd I've ever seen in one movie theater! One of my cousins was there and I didn't find out until the next day. That's how big it was.

I went out with friends as a goodbye to my youth, we all took a break from being morose, troubled teens and went out and saw this and ate 100 buck worth of pizza popcorn etc. and had real, guilt-free fun, so this movie, no matter it's faults is special to me.
