It's stinks that most Metallica fans always say "They haven't made anything good since the Black Album". Honestly, Load and Re-Load are great metal albums. Unfortunately, they were made by Metallica whichs is what REALLY creates the issue. Take Metallica's name off the album and people would beg to know what band made such a great metal record.
20 years ago as a Thrash/Death metal fan I hated the Black album, now as a fan of all Metal, it's actually a great album. Metallica have been trying to get back in touch with their metal roots, but it's been so long since the wrote a kick ass metal album I think they forgot how. Death Magnetic is an "A" for effort album, but they're not the great song writers they used to be. They need to write for themselves not for anyone else like a true artist does. Even their song/album titles suck now.
>proceeds to give out about all their trademarks which have earned their fanbase
>the songs are too long
>guitar tone too garage-y
>gives out about Death Magnetic being crap when it was the most highly acclaimed Metallica album for years with everyone saying they were back on form
>mfw this guy wants to hear different music from a band that simply just don't play the music he wants
>mfw I realise this isn't 4chan and this won't show in green text
100% agree with you. The comment you made about actually listening to it and enjoying it, rather than listening to it and wondering what you don't like about it is a really good point. I think this kind of mentality applies to a lot of Metallica fans (myself included). They look for the faults and weaknesses in the songs and albums in general, rather than taking a step back and just enjoying the music. I say enjoy the songs for what they are without comparing them to their past work.
wow 3 minutes long? ok lemme tell you something, if you watched the some kind of monster dvd. they clearly stated that they didnt wanna go "trendy". yes metallicas new stuff is different.... DIFFERENT did any see some where in this comment DIFFERENT!! yes metallicas choice with lou reed was the worse in there life but if you listen to death magnetic and st anger both great albums compare the two, different from eachother and oldtallica but its not trendy and its good. they do different ,respect!
I didn't find Beyond Magnetic to be very good, it sounded like the rest of the album to me. And I actually like Suicide & Redemption, which is in fact one of the only things I thought was redeeming about Death Magnetic. Though that might be just because I absolutely hated Hetfield's vocals on every track on that album. I definitely agree with you about their decision making. Garage, Inc. is the only good thing they've done in 20 years. Not that Metallica cares what I think, either.
Good analysis of the EP and Metallica's career as a whole. My only disagreement is that anything good came from the Black Album. Their sound took such a dramatic change with that album and they started tailoring their sound to passive radio fans. These four songs seem to hearken back to their old songwriting style.
i dont think death magnetic is as bad as you make it it out to be. Poor production i agree but some solid metal tracks on that album and worth re listening to
What Metallica have to do is to give samples of their new music to their millions of fans and perhaps create some sort of survey and see what the people want. Metallica is going to be so disappointed when they find out when they're songs aren't getting bought anymore.
I disagree with Dom about a great many things he has to say about a great many things, including Metallica (especially Metallica?). But I also find him to be the most interesting voice in the music community right now. He speaks his mind. He surely gives bands a fair shake. And despite what "haters" may say, he is actually far more positive than he is negative.
"Haven't listened to Death Magnetic for at least two years..." Me either. The only times I've heard songs from it have been when I've seen them live. Since the album release.
Turns off video, seriously, people who still think that are idiots. This guys opinions means nothing to me, cause he's just some greasy, long haired, weirdo. I feel sorry for him because he has an inability to like any music.
@XblCheeseofdeath2008 It has become a trend to hate on Metallica post Black album material. I was listening to this song at work and one of the guys I work with was enjoying it until I told him it was Metallica, which from that point on he just cut it down.
@XblCheeseofdeath2008 And your opinions mean anything to anyone else? A rather amusing statement considering his position compared to yours, at least he admits that no-one probably pays much attention to him.
I don't like him. I don't agree with him. Suicide & Redemption an "god-awful" instrumental? Piece of shit, this Lawson dude. A complete wanker who seems like a disturbed fan down with the same who wants Metallica to still make 80s records like KEA, RTL, MoP and to a degree TBA. Though, everybody is entitled to an opinion. But what an pretentious snob with his english accent that doesn't even suit him. Idiot.
spot on Dom. although I think you're being a bit generous when you said their last good album was the 'black' album. i find Metallica to be totally out of touch with real 'metal' since 'and justice'. the fangirls will cry and cry above and below this post. cry on ladies. Metallica = totally irrelevant to the world of 'metal' since 1988 and counting.
Metallica will make one more great album before their time is up! And I think it will be their last. Metallica is my favorite band of all time, and I have defended them time and time again. Their music has always got to my soul and as a fan and a critic I also think some things need to change! But regardless of what they do I will always love their music.I think that these songs are very aggresive, and bold. I think they are going to suprise alot of fans that are doubting them! Metallica 4 life!
am i the only one that prefer the production on the beyond magnetic than to death magnetic? polished production dose not belong in metal. deffo not in thrash.
Fucking metalhead no nothing about music... "they haven't made anything good since the black album"... seriously... damn! you're one tasteless hairy guy!
Just a note on the production etc. These songs are just demos, so HOPEFULLY we'll get a better production on the next record. They must've heard about the clipping business, at least.
having found metallica a bore for the last few years, (death magnetic was good for a while but didnt last for me) this new ep is a great surprise and i hope its a step in the right direction, metallica have 1 great album left in them surely?!
Did anyone else fucking love 'Suicide and Redemption'?

I can't think of anything much better than listening to a guy who knows what he's on about talk about metal for ten minutes.

I honestly don't think Metallica have ever made a bad record in terms of music. In terms of taste, perhaps St.Anger and Lulu are difficult to accept.
Musically they are a tremendous band.

Well of course they weren't that well produced, they were songs that didn't make the album so they didn't fully produce it to its best
