We (The US and the World) did so much with such primitive technology, back then, We could do a hell of a lot more today. Except that we don't really care. It reminds me of one of the many blips and declines of the Roman Empire, over its history. For them, the declines ended up overcoming the blips. It's not a good sign for us. A blip would be, at least, encouraging, about now. But I don't see one on the horizon. It makes me a bit sad.
@sbergman27 you are right, Bergman. The US has contributed greatly to our understanding of the universe. It would be great to see them take greater steps, like that taken by Neil Armstrong, with present technology.
@Grissom2001 After watching for 40+ yrs I've come to the conclusion that the US public isn't likely to increase the present $1/wk per capita for NASA. So it's important to spend wisely. I'm hugely in favor of concentrating on science missions as opposed to manned. And this last year has been fantastic. It's been hard to keep up with all the launches and encounters. STS was a drain of very questionable value. And at least the new manned program isn't a planned exercise in running in place.

This video is actually about the Saturn Encounter. Still very interesting however.
